Guest Artist in Residence: Andrea Conti

Intanto "Life on Mars" in sottofondo...

Pesano come lingotti.

Guest Artist in Residence: Andrea Conti

Museums, universities and other so-called cultural institutions do it. Commercial establishments may also invite artists to wreak their havoc in a safe, clean environment. In the spirit of those enlightened restaurateurs who give creative types a spaghetti dinner in exchange for art to hang on their joint's walls,. Hotel Kranepool’s Management presents its new Guest Artist in Residence Program.

Delighted to be invited, I head to the Hotel Kranepool, deep in the country, in my old sand-colored Picasso. I arrive at a huge gate.

Once inside, dirt roads fork off into a forest, which yields to wide fields of infinite greenery.

A short while later, I arrive at the main entrance of a bizarre structure in the shape of a Turkish toilet, like the ones in public bathrooms.

I walk into a colorful, kitschy atmosphere. The decoration is somewhere between Dada and Metaphysical. It’s like entering a cartoon.

They’re broadcasting Tom Waits songs from every angle. It makes my head spin like a blender. I feel like the referee in a crazy tennis game.

I head to the Reception desk. A goth couple walks by in silence, like some mobile piece of neo-furniture in an abstract painting. A guy wearing glasses is behind the marble-and-brass counter, which has a huge clock embedded in it. Next to him, on a shelf, is a gilded sculpture of some Asian fisherman, I think.

He hands me the key to room 9. Breakfast is being served, with “Life on Mars” as the soundtrack...

Breakfast is a mug of brandy, and Scottish sandies as heavy as ingots.

I’m disoriented. I’m digging all this so much that I forget I’m lactose intolerant.

After a few minutes, I cramp up. My intestines feel like they’re being squeezed out of commission. The Ramones are the background noise: “Hey Ho Let’s Go”. This amps my survival instinct. I walk fast, in search of the toilet.

There are the entrances. In front of the Ladies’ is a lovely person of color. She’s wearing an elegant dress: some African-themed Fendy creation from the 60s. She smiles at me.

I would’ve liked to stop and chat with her, but I’m about to crap myself.

There’s a third toilet door next to the traditional ones. The label says “Intolerant Toilet”. There’s a huge bookshelf next to it, packed with ancient tomes and scrolls in no particular order.

The pain’s beyond belief. I head in, at my utmost limit. The room’s insanely colored. The fuchsia floor looks like porcelain fabric, the rectangular walls are nearly aquamarine. It looks like the torture room in Terry Gilliam’s Brazil.

In the middle of the room, thank God, is a huge toilet, reminiscent of Duchamp’s urinal. There’s no stink, but through the stained-glass floor, you can see moving shadows of organic waste, to which I blessedly add my own. Emptied, I watch the show below. It’s like some Pollock masterpiece.

Business concluded, the music of Einstrunzende Neubauten accompanies me back out into the hotel. I stop to read the sign on the bathroom door. It explains the genial mechanism which distributes organic waste as fertilizer for the park that surrounds the Hotel.

The décor in my room is black and white, like in a Hitchcock film. I need a shower. In the afternoon, I’m scheduled to play in a tournament of cricket on horseback, or bicycle tennis, I forget...

P.S. Oooh lovely, there’s a record player and plenty of vinyl disks. I start off with NIN.
