Glamazon de Jour
“Back me up in case there’s trouble.”
During the day, the Night Porter was just a lonely guy who worked nights. He lived in a cheap apartment, drove an old car and smoked a lot of opium.
The best stuff was sold in the worst neighborhoods. At times, the off-duty Night Porter felt insecure as he drove around in search of quality purveyors. A restless tribe, they were usually armed, and didn't care who noticed. Prices had risen, larger cash amounts were necessary. The atmosphere in the street was jumpy. Clouds shaped like snakes slithered across the sky.
At a phone booth not far from his residence, the Night Porter dialed the number of the muscle-bunny who'd applied for bodyguard/escort work at the Kranepool. She answered on the second ring. After a brief, pleasant conversation, the talk turned to business.
"All you gotta do is accompany me on a supply round," he said. "Back me up in case there's trouble."
"Oh," she said. "Is that all?"
"That's it, for starters. And then...a guy can dream, can't he?"
"Dreams are my business," she whispered, and hung up.
“Dreams are my business.”
She showed up at the rendez-vous point on time. She wasn't dressed in her Mardi Gras outfit. Jeans, black turtleneck, samurai hairdo and near-opaque shades painted a picture of the wrong woman to fuck with.
The Night Porter pushed the passenger-side door open, and she slowly poured herself into the shotgun seat. She didn't ask, where’re we headed? What sorta trouble can I expect? She glanced around the vehicle and said, "Looks like they don't pay too hot at your hotel."
"It's not my hotel," the Night Porter replied.
Just past the railroad tracks, she removed her sunglasses. "Far out. If this job's what I think it is, you're saving me a trip."
"Trip is right. Sometimes real life isn't enough."
“Real life can be unsatisfactory.”
At an intersection of pitted boulevards, a man sat sprawled on a beach chair he’d unfolded just outside a Bar B Q takeout joint. He opened his eyes at the sound of an asthmatic engine. He saw a familiar car with an unfamiliar additional person in it, stood up and put a hand behind his back.
"Hmmm," said the warrior woman. "Wonder if he's gonna come up with good dope, or a weapon of some kind."
The car rolled to a halt. The dealer approached, leant his free arm against its partially rusted roof and scanned the cockpit.
"Now why is one of my most loyal customers bringing strangers into our transaction?" He let his bloodshot eyes rove over the passenger's physique. "Magnetic and pneumatic as these unknown parties undoubtedly are."
"A new friend, Zeke," the Night Porter said. "Maybe a colleague, if things work out. Anyway, we seem to have at least one thing in common."
"Now that’s a coincidence." Like magic, Zeke the Dealer flashed what at first appeared to be a Magic 8-Ball oracle toy. "New shipment from our droogs in Afghanistan. As usual, the first taste’s free."
He handed the black bolus to the buxom bodyguard.
"Gracias, amigo," the Night Porter said.
"Yeah, thanks a lot," the woman warrior added.
"Come back soon. Both of you, I mean. Together, or separately."
The couple in the car drove away slowly, anxious as they were to test the new narcotic's strength and scope.
"That was easy," the aspiring hotel bodyguard/escort said.
But their drug-drenched adventure had only just begun.

Amazzone escort

Ninja Panther of 1,000 Faces
In the dead of a rainy season night, the Night Porter felt an icy prickle at the base of his skull. It was as though some bestial presence just outside the Kranepool, or among the lobby's shadows, had him in its sights.
'Some jungle cat, escaped from the nearby zoo,' he thought. 'Or from the circus that rolled into town yesterday afternoon.'
Warm, humid breezes carried predator tang and jungle noises along with the scent of tree-blossoms while he was on his way to the hotel. The bright yellow big top had seemed so jolly and festive in the twilight. The darkness transformed it into a phosphorescent tumor that lurked below the skyline.
Something growled, or cleared its basso profundo throat. The Night Porter froze, unsure whether he'd left the beavertail blackjack in the top or bottom drawer of the Reception Desk.
An imposing figure
An imposing figure hove into view under the neon chandelier, and strode across the slate-gray broadloom wall-to-wall carpet. Feathers and rhinestones fluttered and sparkled from her diaphanous sheath and headdress. The muscles beneath the clingy fabric said, don't fuck with me. The bright eyes and delicate features pleaded, please don't hurt me.
"Can I help you, uh, Miss?"
The formidable, vulnerable wraith approached with a dancer’s ease, leant gracefully on the counter. "I don't like the work I'm doing," she said, in a girlish voice. "I need a change."
"Yeah I hear you," the Night Porter whispered. "I'd propose a switch, but I don't think I'd be capable of doing whatever it is you do."
The nocturnal Amazon pulled a typed sheet of paper from her costume. "I have previous experience in the hospitality industry. What I seek is a position as an escort/bodyguard."
The Night Porter, bemused.
Nostalgic visions of hotel dicks and cigar-girls flashed in the Night Porter's imagination. She didn't fit the mold. He examined the resumé, which read like a rosy dream or a pink nightmare. "I'll pass this on to The Management. Can't guarantee anything, though."
"Of course not," she said, and turned to disappear again into the night, to whichever go-go club it was where she exhibited her fabulous self. The Night Porter couldn't bear it.
"Wait," he almost shouted.
She shot him a hopeful glance over her marble shoulder.
"If you're free tomorrow afternoon," he went on, "I've got a job for you."
"My number's there on the CV," she said. "Call me."

Pantera ninja dai mille volti
"Posso aiutarti, ehm, Miss?"
"Chiamami."

Off Furniture
A person enters a hotel in hopes of a break from the wearisome whirlwind of travel, refuge from a marital squabble, or the prying eyes of the world. Hotel guests expect quiet, cleanliness, comfort, and politeness from the staff, a reassuring atmosphere. The guest who’s just arrived looks around the lobby while the clerk checks the documents, does the paperwork and selects the appropriate key.
Something's wrong. It isn't the building itself, which seems structurally sound. The lobby is pleasantly proportioned. The paintings on the walls are innocuous. The wallpaper and carpets are mutedly self-effacing. There's a quaint wooden telephone booth in a corner near the restroom. The disquiet lies in the furniture.
The furniture is off.
These objects, supposedly intended for use and not as decoration, have an inhospitable air about them. They do not say, sit on me, take a book from one of my shelves and read it in the warm light that shines from my friend the lamp.
Is this place really a hotel?
Up in the room, it's no better. The bed expresses lumpiness, loneliness, frigidity. The closet opens like a bored yawn. The TV only shows old films whose performers have all passed on. The stationery on the miserly desk was purchased at another hotel's going-out-of-business sale. Look at the address: Rue Lumière, Casablanca.
Wherever you thought you were, this isn’t the right place.

Arredamento alienante
Patti & Robbie's (Other) First Night at the Chelsea
A high floor of New York’s most infamous hotel. Patti enters the room, takes a deep sniff of the air in there.
Patti: Pooh! Smells the same as it did way back when. At least there's something you can count on in New York City. Count on staying the same, that is.
She looks down onto 23rd Street, turns, takes a seat at the makeshift desk by the window, arranges her hands on its scarred wooden surface and contemplates the approaching twilight.
Patti: I'm still alive. Still doing what I always wanted to do. Everyone opens doors for me now. Except here at the Chelsea. I love this place. I guess I never really wanted to check out, but... (Snickers. A pause. She closes her eyes.) Are you still here too, Robert? I miss you a lot, y'know?
The hotel’s neon sign shimmers to pink life just outside the window.
Robert: I checked out prematurely. I miss you too. I miss everything. You can't work, on this side. There's nothing to do but watch, and be, sort of. But it's not that bad.
Patti: (a tear rolls down her cheek) You got your voice back. I couldn't stand it, the last time we spoke. (stronger) I knew I'd find you here again.
Robert: Back to the scene of the crime.
Patti: This is where we still belong. And we're guilty of the same things. Even though I try not to act like a star.
Robert: I pretended I knew what I was doing, I mean, aside from work. But really I had no idea.
Patti: We had some dreams, didn’t we. Turned out they were way too big when they came true. So now I dream real small. The chances’re better.
Robert: Tell me one of your little dreams, Patricia.
Patti: Once, just once, I wanna write a poem like Bernadette Mayer. That sounds as if some wonderful woman is talking to you about normal everyday stuff so that it shines true, and funny.
Robert: That's a good dream. Don’t let it go. I still love you, you know. (He fades. The neon sign glow brighter as darkness falls on the city.)
Patti: (whispers) I still love you too.

Patti: Puah.
Patti: Sono sempre viva. Faccio ancora le cose che volevo fare. Ora trovo le porte tutte aperte. Anzi, me le spalancano davanti. A parte qui all'Hotel Chelsea. Adoro questo posto. Veramente non avrei mai voluto andarmene, ma... (sghignazza. Pausa. Chiude gli occhi.) Sei ancora qui, Robert? Mi manchi tanto, sai.
Robert: Ho effettuato prematuramente il check-out.
Perciò ora sogno in piccolo.
Patti: (sussurra) Anch'io ti amo sempre.
The Big Rooms
Women who live in major cities often dream that their dwellings have been enhanced and augmented by nocturnal powers beyond their comprehension. They explore the generously proportioned extra rooms, gloat at the near-infinite closet space. They walk out onto unexpected terraces to behold fabulous views of the park, the skyscrapers downtown, the harbor. They wake up to disappointment. They wake up cramped.
'Why,' they wordlessly wonder, 'must I work so hard to get so little?'
A change of scenery is long overdue, at this point in their lives.
Weary metropolitan women check in at the Big Rooms Hotel. They're shown, by the courteous Staff, to suites which appear vastly beyond their economic means.
They can sleep if they want to, but many choose to wander about their temporary hypertrophic quarters until breakfast, which is included.
In the dining room at Ground Level, they feast on calorie-free ostrich eggs and brontosaurus bacon.
'This is the real life,' they think, as the bottomless cup of coffee flows in and down. 'This is how I want to live, forever and ever.'
On their way back upstairs, some turn to the receptionist and wistfully ask, "When's check-out time?"
"Oh, don't worry about it," he reassuringly answers. "In fact, why not stay another night? Your outfit goes so well with the wallpaper. It's on the house."
The house he's talking about is enormous. There's room for many, many frustrated women, big and small. Maybe all of them can fit.

Forse ci possono stare tutte.

L'hôtel ivre
Human beings like to get messed up. Alcohol, their drug of choice, lowers inhibitions, damages internal organs, and lightens pockets. Few bars offer patrons a place to sleep off their booze intake. Many hotels, however, boast highly profitable alcoves in which guests and people who've just walked in off the street can partake of mind-numbing intoxicants.
A global capital once known for erotic postcards and addictive absinthe boasts a hostelry where pretences and social prejudices are dropped. The check-in procedure dispenses with the usual formalities.
Come in, whoever you are, have a seat at the bar and ingest your dose. If the stars are in the right position, you'll meet your sodden soul-mate, head upstairs and get laid. Neither of you will remember what happened, the next morning. Hangovers have the power to clear consciences.
Voilà, c'est simple.

L'hotel ebbro
Agli esseri umani piace intossicarsi.
Black Only
Not terribly long ago and not so far away, odious signs were posted in places where human beings are meant to gather.
Exclusion is ugly. It's also bad for business. Unless you're Studio 54.
The Black Only is an hypothetical hotel where those once excluded are included exclusively.
Forced to remain on the outside looking hopelessly in, the formerly privileged may feel the frisson of Unerwünschtheit.
Those in the lobby and upstairs in the suites might come to understand the weight of being in the wrong.
Observant left-outers will see a small sign posted just slightly above the fire hydrant beside the Black Only's ominously darkened revolving door.
"The Real Party's Happening 'Round the Back".
There's an alley, overgrown with lush jungle plants. Spread the leaves and behold—the restricted hotel has another revolving door, and no one's guarding it.
Sure, c'mon in. We just wanted you to know how it feels to be discriminated against for no reason. Now we can live together, without fear, and with a shared purpose. Our hotel planet's heating up. Let's all cool down and figure out what to do about it.

Solo nero
Shadowy powers have decreed that March is Women's History Month. Nothing wrong with that. Knowledge of the past can serve to prevent future injustice and engender positive change. Fantastic. But it'd be better to improve the present. Especially for women, whose day-to-day existence is a whirlwind.
Female well-being is a labyrinth of subjective factors. A crucial element is O.
O is physical sensation, sublime insight, oblivion. O is another, better world. Especially for women.
Just before, during, and after O.
O can be elusive. Intimate anatomies are of a near-infinite variety. No gadget, technique or mood is a guarantee. O requires effort.
Few things are more worth the effort than O.
March is O month, at O-tel KranepOOl. March, and every month.

O=Mc2
The Invisible Men's Hotel
We've had our time. Now we are the invisible men. We, who once desired to be seen by the world's more solid inhabitants, have our place here.
We, who once beheld our fellow humans—obsessively observed them—have been pulled, or have withdrawn by our own volition, behind this masonry curtain.
Our rooms are empty. The showers run lukewarm at best. Breakfast is not included. Check-out time exists only in our dreams. It will come. Of that, at least, we may be certain. But will there be a lovely nothingness, or will we only have faded deeper into a space without time.
What will the room rates be, in that awful place where dim cold light shines on a void, only to further obscure it. Will this dull radiance bounce off of whatever shape we shall take, if any? No one will be present to confirm or negate our continued existence. We have no luggage. Our bodies were things long left behind in eternity's locker room. Nobody wanted them, not even we ourselves.

Dalle docce scorre acqua tiepida. La colazione non è inclusa. L'ora del check-out esiste solo nei nostri sogni. Arriverà. Di questo almeno possiamo essere certi. Ma ci sarà poi un meraviglioso nulla? Oppure ci saremo solo ulteriormente sbiaditi dentro uno spazio grigio e senza tempo.

Grazie!
Disturb
Guests communicate with the hotel outside their rooms—the housekeeping staff in particular—through small cardboard signs that hang from doorknobs. The message is an either/or proposition.
In certain unconventional lodgings however, a third option dangles.
Guests who so wish may put out the Disturb sign.
At some unpredictable moment they'll hear loud, unpleasant noises.
Strange beings from other worlds/dimensions will appear, their gaping mouths jammed with dripping, asymmetrical fangs.
Repressed memories of past wrongdoings return to consciousness, along with the certainty that retribution is infinitely patient.
The chambermaid who’s coming up the hall with the vacuum cleaner set to Full Blast is your runaway daughter/alcoholic mother/vengeful ex-wife. She's covered in blood and she's screaming, screaming.

Disturbare Prego
Another Gray Area
A colleague writes from Roswell, NM:
Time slows. the lights dim, and the world fades to a bizarre old photograph of itself.
That was no ordinary revolving door you just went through. Its glass panels spin whoever enters into an existential plane where nothing is necessarily bad or good.
Those who've grown ambivalent about life’s ambiguities feel at home in The Gray Area. Others, who want to explore the spaces between dream and reality, find a nebulous path spread before them.
The doors are unlocked. The rooms feature passageways to other suites, other floors, other dimensions.
No one here is an alien.

Patti & Robert's 1st Nite @ The Chelsea (An Off-Off Broadway Mini-Musical)
(Just kids? Ha! They knew what they were doing. But here we go…)
Patti: (enters The Room, drops her duffle bag, looks around) Well hon looks like we finally hit the big time, huh?
Robert: We'll be able to afford it. Soon.
Patti: Yeah and I guess I'll be the one who has to cook and clean and all that other crap, too.
Robert: Only if you want to. Art and poetry's all that matters here.
Patti: Oh sure. Here's my poem for the afternoon: Chelsea smells-y/This hotel’s-y from hell-sy. Gonna hafta sells-y a lotta books/Cuz I got the brains, and you got the looks. How's that?
Robert: We're a team. Right now my job is to make art.
Patti: (brightens, or pretends to) We're a dream of two young gods in a room. We're living art and art'll save us.
Robert: From what? Poverty? Old age?
Patti: For starters. But what I'm really talking about is anonymity, facelessness, insignificance, oblivion. Maybe we should, like, kill each other here. Real gory so it makes the tabloids. I'll write Art on the moldy wallpaper with your blood.
Robert: Try it, an' I'll whip ya till ya can't stand up no more.
(They round on each other, approach each other menacingly, lock eyes, raise their dukes. Then they embrace, and kiss. Together they sing, I Got You Babe.)
Curtain.

Patti e Robert: Prima notte all'Hotel Chelsea (Il musical)
Patti: E toccherà a me cucinare e pulire e tutta quella roba lì.
Robert: Solo se vorrai. Qui importano solo arte e poesia.
Patti: Oh certo.
Qui vivremo l'arte e l'arte ci salverà.
Robert: Da cosa? Povertà? Vecchiaia?
Insieme cantano I Got You Babe.)

Green Door Suite
Flash back to the fabulous (in retrospect) 1970s, when the XXX film industry enjoyed its moment of glamour. Lines formed at red-lit box-offices across the USA. Hardcore stars in tuxedoes and clinging gowns signed autographs and handed out tit- and cock-prints to the throbbing masses.
Golden Age hardcore movies began their lives as carefully typed screenplays. Analog optical cameras captured the scenes on celluloid at 24 frames a second. The producers spared no expense.
A green door featured in adult entertainment's supreme masterpiece. There was art involved in the production, and, later, a grisly murder/suicide.
Someone thought it’d be a good idea to turn a hoary old porn flick turn into a theme hotel.
Too bad you checked in. Now it’s time for you to check out. Pow!

Pum!.
Two Girls in the Hotel of the Monkey God/Due ragazze nell'hotel del dio scimmia
Me and my friend Monica went on vacation to Thailand, or maybe Bali. We needed a break from our frenetic lives, an all-inclusive week of luxury and pampering. Maybe a new boyfriend or two. What we got instead was monkeys
The hotel didn't look anything like the one in the brochure they showed us at the travel agency. The guy at the reception desk shot us a blank look when we asked about WiFi and room service. He didn't even offer to carry our suitcases. The only other guests were small, hyperactive and extremely hairy. They were monkeys.
Erano scimmie.
There were some natives, too./C’erano anche degli indigeni.
Monica thought they were cute, at first. She had a bag of potato chips left over from the airplane. The monkeys swarmed her as soon as she took it out of her purse. She shrieked. I freaked.
Io impazzii.
Our "suite" was a little temple just outside the main building. The monkeys had taken over the place a long time ago, judging by the sheer amount of poop.
Needless to say, as soon as we'd unpacked we escaped to the beach, which was pretty nice. Then we went shopping for sarongs and purses and stuck flowers between our thighs.
Billionaires Disease
“What have we here?”
VIP hotel guests in the First World have reported that unsanitary auras pervade their top-floor suites. The response to their complaints has proven insufficient, even suspiciously so. Rumors of a cover-up have spread.
A guest says, “Ew!”
"An icky sensation haunts Five-Star spaces First World-wide," said a high-profile industrialist who travels frequently. "Along with noisome odors. I'd open all the windows, but modern hotel structures no longer allow this freedom."
The Industrialist, observed at (un)ease in his penthouse suite.
Lady M., international celebrity
"The sickness creeps in after dusk," said an international female celebrity. "The walls swell and ooze pus, and other substances even more unpleasant. I always call reception as soon I detect a noxious presence, but by the time someone on the staff comes up to investigate, there's nothing left but an eerie premonition that things won't go well after check-out. That's not what I pay for."
A socialite contemplates an apparition of seborrheic gangrene.
When asked about the alleged phenomenon known as VIP Disease (VD), potentially disastrous to the global Platinum & Champagne hotel business, a spokesman stated, "Although we're hesitant to say the infection might be brought into our establishments by the guests themselves, we recommend fresh paint, sanitized wallpaper and carpeting, and routine checks of air-conditioners."

Supermodel Gasha!
"We recommend exorcists," quipped a fashion-biz supermodel with no fixed residence. "Or shamans and alternative medicine practitioners. Or else we'll take our business to Mars"

Morbo ricco
L’ospitalità terrestre è in via d’estinzione?
A Pink Hotel
A friend writes from New York:
There wasn't much acceptance where I came from. I mean, for the way I was.
When I made up my mind to escape hometown life, I didn't know where or how the trip would end. I figured I'd just start over wherever whoever gave me a lift was headed.
No one stopped.I didn't fit the average hitchhiker description. So I walked back into town and boarded a bus bound for the big city. This didn't leave me with much cash.
Outside the Port Authority Bus Station, on 8th Avenue, no one knew who I was, or cared. Fate had dumped me in a place where I didn't look out of place, and this felt like freedom.
So I headed downtown, to where the free people I'd heard about lived. When my high heels couldn't go any further, I was standing in front of a hotel. The joint looked pretty awful from the outside, but when I told my story to the guy behind the counter, he said I could stay for free until I figured out what to do with my new life.
That was the first time anyone had any faith in me.
A cell in a dingy flophouse became both home and workplace. Maurice the friendly clerk only took 25% of my earnings, and almost never batted me around. It was too good to last.
Maurice the Receptionist, R.I.P.
Unfortunately, he passed away recently. The new management won’t give me the same deal he did, or the love.
Turns out life is a round-trip affair. Maybe the folks at home'll take me back the way I am now.
A member of the heartless new management hides his face. I refuse to hide mine.

The Couple
Hotel clerks who work different shifts communicate with each other the old-fashioned way. They leave notes under the counter, where guests and Management won't see them.
When the Night Porter came back on duty after a mandatory vacation, he found an unusual message in the usual place.
The couple in Suite 1690 refuses to check out. Approach them at some ungodly hour and convince them to leave. The element of surprise will be on your side.
'At least something'll be on my side,' the Night Porter thought. And then he thought no more of it until 3:11 a.m. He tucked in his shirt, straightened his clip-on tie, left his post and took the stairs to avoid elevator bong.
On the way up, he thought of Secret Police, quiet nights destroyed by a knock on the door, human removals, lives shattered. Had such horrible dramas ever unfolded in hotels? At the Kranepool in particular?
Suite 1690 was far from the elevator bank and afforded majestic views of the mid-size city below.
Knock-knock. Who's there? Wait, this is no joke. The door opened without a sound.
"We're not leaving," the guest said, quietly. He wore a nightshirt, and his hair was brushed. He hadn't been asleep, apparently.
The Night Porter looked over his shoulder. Someone else was in the bed, a small hill of feet rose under blanket at its foot.
"But sir," the Night Porter began, "you only reserved for two nights. According to the Register it's been almost a month now, and you haven't paid even part of what you owe. We hesitate to alert the authorities, but..."
"Then don't. We like it here. We want to stay. What skin is it off your ass?"
While the Night Porter considered this concept, the immovable guest shut the door in his face.
Slam!

Confessions of a Hotel Sofa
“The couch always has a better view of the vases. I love vases.”
Hotels replace the mattresses on the beds every now and then. There’s some law about this. Pillows wear out, towels turn grey, and they go into the garbage. Couches, considered mere side-pieces of hospitality furniture, get more hard use than the average citizen might suspect. They're the unsung sex slaves of the hotel world.
“Oh but if I open the curtains everyone can see me at rest on the couch. Everyone who wants to, that is.”
“I’ll untie and un-gag her if she shuts up about her god damn psychoanalysis.”
“I confess: I moved the couch from its original position.”
“Classy hotels like this one even have couches out on the street.”
“The couch in our Suite wasn’t big enough for the both of us, so we called Reception and got the bellboy to bring up another one. Of course we gave him a tip.”
“Yeah, don’t take any wooden dirhams.”
