Brad & Gary at the Highland Gardens Hotel

Souls change bodies, as actors change wardrobe.

An actor was at rest in a folding settee at the edge of the Highland Gardens Hotel's greenish, un-kidney-shaped swimming pool. He thought this strange. He'd been at his New York apartment, and some overly vivid daydream had transported him back to where movie biz fantasies usually begin and often end.

There was someone in the deck chair next to his, an elfin man with disturbingly enormous eyes.

"Good afternoon," the wizened little fellow said. "I prefer to be alone out here, but with you I feel like I'm alone, with myself."

"Don't mind me," the actor said. "I'm not really here. I'm at home, reminiscing about a glorious career."

"Tell me about it. My high point was being an art critic for a free weekly newspaper."

The actor didn't want to say his career had in fact been prestigious . "That's not true," he said. "You're an underground star. I saw you in a delightful documentary about..."

He'd viewed that slice-of-Hollywood-life film on his wide-screen TV. The little man was a writer, a novelist, a counter-cultural hero in some circles, and dead.

"...about aspiring actors from Canada who live..."

The actor looked around himself. He might've stayed, even lived, at this hotel before, spoken with eager, star-struck kids, and older men and women whose hopes for fame faded by the day.

"...right here. And they help each other, and support each other. But you were always alone."

"Still am. The book reviews just get meaner, the money from the publishers less and less."

Traffic flowed past all the haunted houses along Franklin Avenue, not far away. Engine thrum muffled by the trees. Leaves shifted by the breeze let fall greenish light that sparkled on the water in the pool.

The actor was alone again. The writer had disappeared, although he might've just gotten an idea and gone back to his room to write it down before it, too, vanished.

Who changes the water in the pool of life.

"Non badare a me," disse l'attore.

"Dillo a me.
