Motel Divine

hair girl awning.png

Despite all the manufactured glamour and glitter, making movies is a business in the end. Fame and ravishing good looks don’t last. Today’s stars had better provide themselves with a hedge against the cold, silent years ahead.

motel divine 2.png

There are people still alive who know all the dialogues in Pink Flamingos by heart. Not many of them, however, would guess that Divine invested a healthy chunk of her film earnings in a motel, and those few would be surprised to discover that the place isn’t equipped with two-way mirrors in the toilets. There’s no enema salon, no thrift shop in the lobby, not a speck of Divine memorabilia anywhere.

divine.jpg

“She kinda shot herself in the cha-cha heel,” says Motel Divine’s long-time manager, Alvin Kluster. “She ought’ve exploited her underground bona fides. We’d’a had gangs of beatniks coming around to stage their kooky fashion shows and mayonnaise parties. Instead, we get religious groups who don’t even know where the joint’s name came from. Not that there’s anything wrong with religious groups.”

Divine never set foot in her motel, according to Manager Kluster. She just signed and deposited the checks, approved the occasional repairs and renovations and went about her glittering trashy life.

motel divine 10.png

“When s/he hired me—which was the only time we ever met in person, unfortunately—s/he said, ‘I want this to be a place where a person can feel like they’re at their grandparents’ house, before the old creeps went nuts and smelled of pee.’”

The only nod to Motel Divine’s origins is a plastic wading bird that stands on wire legs behind a shrubbery just outside the lobby and doesn’t look even slightly out-of-place.

Motelisti anonimi

Dodici scale conducono all’entrata.

We’ve had a few complaints. Mostly about certain aesthetic choices made here at Hotel Kranepool. Nudity, female: too much for some, not enough for others. There’ve been requests for equal time.

malepool1.png

Managment might’ve replied: Although there aren’t any other chronicles of metaphysical hospitality out there in the ether, there are practically limitless sources of male nudity.

***

malepool2.png

In other words, if you wanna see mouth-watering male nudes, all ya gotta do is plug into the digital Info-Verse and look for ’um.

In altre parole: se vuoi vedere succulenti uomini nudi, basta connettersi e partire in crociera digitale.

Conversely, if you don’t wanna see jaw-dropping babes from an imaginary dissolute past sprawled all over the Kranepool’s sparkling-new lobby furniture...never mind.

There’s room for everyone at Hotel Kranepool. We aim to please as many guests as possible, in every way imaginable, especially, in this case, Ms. KK in NYC.

Retired Police Chiefs’ Ball

rc3.jpg

Conventions are big business, for hotels. The Kranepool has gladly and successfully hosted gatherings of stamp collectors and other hobbyists, extended family get-togethers, high school- and college reunions. The Management was pleased when a representative of the Retired Police Chiefs Association called to reserve our entire establishment for a weekend junket.

“Great,” the Manager who’d taken the call said.

“Now listen,” the retired Police Chief on the other end of the line said. “Aside from meals and beverages, we’d like you to provide us with a little entertainment.”

rc10.jpg

“Oh certainly,” the Manager said. “Many top-ranked acts have performed here at the Kranepool. We proudly feature a concert stage with incorporated dance floor, a screening room, and a rotating bar on the top floor.”

“That’s not what us old cops consider entertainment, if you know what I mean.”

“Oh. Sorry sir, we’re not that kind of hotel.”

“Oh yeah? Well listen, it’d be a real shame if your kinda hotel sorta like burned to the ground or something.”

“We’ll see what we can do.”

“Good boy. See ya next weekend.”

rc5.jpg

The Retired Police Chief wing-ding wasn’t nearly as wild an event as The Management had braced themselves for. The sex-workers they’d enlisted were impressed by the guests’ gentlemanliness and generosity.

rc1.jpg

“Never got such big tips in my life.”

rc4.jpg

“Even bought me a bouquet from Regina’s flower shop-with-the-weird-name in the lobby.”

“Treated me to a new hairdo at Mister Kevin’s Salon de Beauty, also in the lobby.”

“Took me to have my fortune read at Madame Ozmya’s Palmistry Parlor, which is in the lobby too. She predicted a wedding in my near future, and my retired Police Chief date promptly proposed. We drank champagne all night to celebrate, after I said yes.”

“Ah no?

“The Suite was extremely clean. What I thought was a cockroach on the pillow turned out to be a chocolate mint. Nice touch. We’ll be back.”

Courtesy has become a shrunken thing, like a human head in the wrong hands. A hand-written note just means more than an e-mail, SMS or tweet, even if the message is the same. To some, it might seem superfluous to say “Thank you” for a paid sojourn, but hotel workers like to know that they’re appreciated, same as anyone.

Baci!”

Size Plus Hotel

Big & Tall Men have their own clothing stores. Large ladies patronize Plus Size boutiques, but where can they spend the night if they find themselves alone and at loose ends on a business trip?

escalator peep.jpg

A few select hostelry concerns saw a huge potential demand, and refurbished existing colossal structures to accommodate independent giantesses dressed or undressed for a night on the town.

“The so-called marketing experts we consulted held up ‘Beware!’ signs,” said Oliver Penrose, Manager of the Heavy Crush Lodge, a Big & Tall Ladies trend-setter. “We decided to go ahead, damn the torpedoes.”

The Heavy Crush is a clothing-optional beach resort built around a zeppelin hangar that’d fallen into disuse. Hence, the airship motif. “We like wood, rubber--anything that won’t unleash sparks,” said Hugo Vincent, responsible for the HC’s decor. “Of course, if our guests want to spark up intimate conversations, that’s their business. All our furnishings are reinforced for, uh, heavy duty action.”

tall dancer.jpg

Accent on the heavy? Or on the action? How tall, how heavy, was the Heavy Crush’s largest guest so far?

“Oh, I’d say at least 50 feet tall, and well over a ton,” said Mr Vincent. “But there wasn’t a speck of cellulite anywhere on her. Not as far as I could tell. Maybe if I’d looked her over with my binoculars. But that’s illegal.”

beach bldg2.JPG

“Most of all, we respect our guests’ privacy,” interjected Manager Penrose. “Our guests attract more than enough stares in the outside world. The Heavy Crush is a peaceful preserve for bigness and tallness.”

The Quantum Hotel

1.JPG

The Night Porter often looked into the Dumpster behind the Kranepool before he came in through the Service Entrance and clocked in. One sultry twilight he recovered there a stack of glamour magazines from another space-time continuum.

2.jpg

‘Past visions of possible futures are always so poignant,’ he thought, as he leafed through the glossy pages. ‘Especially in the light of dystopian present reality.’

5.jpg

The world around the Hotel had gone quiet when a summer thunderstorm hit, hard.

Shocked by lightning from Supermodel imagery to duty, the Night Porter made an inspection round. “Don’t let the impending ecological disaster get a foothold,” was The Management’s policy.

13.jpg

No windows were broken, no electrical fires had started, but when he returned to the Reception Desk, the ‘phone rang. A guest in Suite 220 wanted to report a quiet particle on the 13th floor’s Southwest corner.

“That’s the Helmut Newton Suite,” the Night Porter said.

“Who cares what Suite it is?” the guest replied. “Get up there and tell ’um to stop dancing barefoot to no music.”

Newtonian physiques were always an impressive sight. The Be Right Back sign shimmered onto the Reception Desk.

8.jpg

The elevator trip was a sparkly transporter scene in Star Trek. ‘Possible side-effect of the storm,’ the Night Porter thought.

Strange silent vibes emanated from behind the Helmut Newton Suite’s door. He knocked quietly. As he was about to insert the pass-key, he thought, ‘Observation of events might influence them.’

Some force drew him in nonetheless.

26.jpg

Quantum mechanics allow supermodels to be in two unpredictable places at the same time. A flash in the past sticks to a patinated page until someone interferes. Supermodels careen into the present. Gravity bends time, light and space. Images are distorted on the Event Horizon, but there’s still time for a last desperate disco dance before the planet becomes the Black Hole it was destined to be since The Big Bang bonged out.

Dark matter took over.

Someone was binging the annoying little bell on the Reception counter. “There are nude women in the hallways,” the nightshirted guest said.

The Night Porter reluctantly opened his eyes. “And you’re complaining?”

L’Hotel dei quanti

25.JPG

12.jpg

Strane silenziose vibrazioni emanavano dall’Helmut Newton Suite.

Dirty Hotel Memories

1 x.jpg

A friend writes from the Coast:

2 x.jpg

The first hotel I ever stayed at was somewhere near Lake Tahoe. I was about twelve years old. My folks had decided to get divorced, so they left me in the room most of the time. I’d head out to the pool, where there were always some bored-looking ladies in bikinis flaked out on the deck chairs.

3 x.jpg

The TV in our room wasn’t working too well. The old creep in the lobby wouldn’t let me change the channel to watch cartoons, so I sat on a lounger and stared at him. At some point he put down his magazine, put the Be Right Back sign on the Reception Desk, and exited. To the toilet, I thought, and it wasn’t a pleasant thought.

4 x.jpg

Wherever he’d gone, he stayed there a long time. Finally I got up to take a peek at what he’d been reading so intently, and wasn’t surprised to see that it was what my old man called cheesecake.

6 x.jpg

The feeling this first glimpse of adult nudity aroused wasn’t exactly sexual. The women in the magazine looked exactly how I wanted to be when I grew up. Needless to say, I swiped the dirty mag and went back to our room.

7.JPG

My father came back to the hotel by himself and caught me reading smut. “This stuff’s for boys,” he said, and confiscated the material. It’s possible he returned it to the scruggly hotel clerk, but I don’t think so. We left the next morning and I never saw my mother again.

8 x.jpg

Last weekend, my girlfriend Sheila and I were at a Flea Market, and I saw the same issue of Tiger Sweat in a cardboard box. The old creep in the folding chair wanted twenty bucks for it. That seemed like too much. But when we got home, Sheila pulled the magazine out of the back of her shorts and handed it over.

10 x.jpg

“Couldn’t resist,” she said. “That greedy bastard brought out my inner shoplifter. You’re in this magazine somewhere, aren’t you?”

Sporchi ricordi d’hotel

12.JPG

14.JPG

Ovunque fosse andato, vi rimase a lungo.

16.JPG

“Cleanliness is of paramount importance. I only work in Love Hotels with hygienic facilities. I don’t want to feel dirty before or after a date.”

Tokyo, that sprawl of waterways and pagodas, closet-sized sushi- and noodle joints, human swarms decked out in avant-garde fashions and kimono, muted salary-men and flamboyant gangsters, giant 3D animated billboards that appear and vanish in the mist caught between the skyscrapers’ glare.

“This place always smells of fish, but look at that view!”

“This place always smells of fish, but look at that view!”

One feels like a microbe adrift in a macrocosm. And it ain’t cheap, neither. Where can one go for comfort, privacy and intimacy at the end of frantic metropolitan day?

Tokyo is also densely packed with Love Hotels—relatively inexpensive havens for furtive lovers, quick pick-ups, and trade. Pick your price, decor, selection of adult toys. And your company.

Cash-heavy gai-jin pay out the nose to bathe in, and perhaps absorb, a little Geisha culture. Tokyo-ites tend to favor exotic imported escorts. There must be a million “pleasure foreigners” in the Naked Megalopolis. They all have stories to tell. Here’s a smattering.

Hotel Goddess Vicki Baum

vb1.JPG

Vicki Baum wrote the first international bestseller. Menschen im Hotel (in English, and most other languages, the title is Grand Hotel) launched a raft of popular phenomena, and propelled the spunky author towards Broadway and then Hollywood, where she enjoyed further success, until she didn’t anymore.

vb2.JPG

Born in Vienna, she had a career as a musician, and learned to box at a Berlin gymnasium where Marlene Dietrich also trained. Legend has it she could knock most men out with a right or a left. She was also hell with a jump-rope.

vb3.jpg

The hotel that brought her fortune and fame was a fantastical re-imagination of the Adlon, in Berlin, which was bombed nearly flat during the Second World War. Readers wander through closed doors, behind the scenes, into the minds of the various classes and types of people who stay, work, screw, kill themselves and steal in hotels.

vb5.JPG

Vicki Baum’s metaphor for life in modern society is the hotel’s revolving door, which turns perpetually. People come and go. They have faces and names, which no one remembers. The rooms gotta be cleaned. Breakfast’s gotta be served. Shoes gotta be shined. Management declines all responsibility for valuables not left in the safe behind the Reception Desk.

Check-out’s at 11 a.m. Tips are greatly appreciated.

Dea d’Hotel Vicki Baum

vb7.JPG

Maid to Order

Some people think all you gotta do to be a hotel maid (or the male equivalent) is learn how to dust furniture, make beds real quick and shove a vacuum cleaner around. But that’s wrong. It’s not just a demanding job, it’s dangerous. And whoever wants to do it had better be prepared.

The Cubist Hotel

curv street.jpg

The Cubist Hotel isn’t anywhere specific. The Cubist Hotel happens, when a certain kind of guest walks into a particular hotel lobby, or enters her/his suite. Perceptions of the material world change.

Most hotel rooms are equipped with a mirror or two. The cubed guest beams her/his gaze at these formerly flat planes of silvered glass, and previous self-images are temporarily shattered, with no bad luck attached. Infinity goes on and on and on long after you stop looking.

The Rubber Muse

Gerhard Peitschl was the scion of a rich Austrian family. At an early age, he expressed horror at the mere thought of taking over his father’s tractor factory. He roundly declared he’d be an artist, a dancer or an actor instead.

He painted, danced and acted at various times in his life, but preferred to enact live flesh-and-rubber performances in hotel suites.

“Herr Peitschl left unhealthy puddles on the floor, instead of tips or thank-you notes on the bedside tables,” recalled a chambermaid.

Two hotel chambermaids, who preferred not to be identified, shared bitter memories about Herr Peitschl’s “Awful Happenings”.

For this, and other reasons, Peitschl never “played” the same hotel twice. The tightwad playboy affected elaborate disguises, and signed hotel registers with names invented on the spot.

Aunt Flo & Me

A friend writes from Long Island:

af6.png

A woman I know recommended I read Hotel Kranepool. All that nudity seemed offensive at first, but then it dissipated into a warm, soft dream. A scroll through past episodes led to a story about a young lady who ran away from home to work at a motel managed by an older woman who’s related to her in some way. Near-forgotten memories floated up from a murky bottom.

af1.png

Unlike the woman in the HK story, the Aunt in my life was one of my mother’s sisters. Whenever she told my parents she wanted to adopt me, they’d answer, “Take her! She’s all yours.”

Our family battles were the stuff of legend, and it was mostly my fault.

af3.png

Aunt Flo was easier to deal with than my parents. Practically anybody was. She’d blow into town, stay at our place for a night or two, and then we’d head off together in her old car. “To an exclusive beauty resort,” as she put it.

af5.png

There was usually a shower and a hair-dryer somewhere in the places we stayed in, so she wasn’t lying. Aunt Flo knew a lot about beauty treatments and other games. I snapped these pictures because I wanted to remember how beautiful she was, and how much fun we had together. She said it wasn’t a good idea, but as usual let me have my way.

She was right, of course. My snoopy Pop found my secret storybook. He threw a fit, and threw me out.

af8.png

With nowhere else to go, I showed up at Aunt Flo’s house. Turned out she lived with her girlfriend, whom she’d never mentioned. Let’s just say there was trouble.

A woman’s real life begins where her girlhood ends.

Zia Flo

Un’amica scrive da Long Island:

af4.png

af2.png

The Lonely Man Hotel

So, here we are…

So, here we are…

A fellow arrived alone in a town where he’d never been before. What he’d come for didn’t really matter, the fact was that he didn’t know anyone and needed a place to stay. His suitcase matched his budget. He looked around the train station square. Rain was on the way.

Thirst takes many forms, for the solitary.

Thirst takes many forms, for the solitary.

Lonely man hotels are usually built close to railroad tracks. They’re not tall structures. If they have neon signs out front, they’re either broken or their light has faded to the point of obscurity. Their message is short, and to the point: Lonesome stranger, even you can afford to stay here. In fact, this is where you belong.

Home is the stranger, for a night or two.

Home is the stranger, for a night or two.

The weary traveler entered the lobby, which seemed deserted. A man was hiding behind a newspaper at the reception desk. Little conversation was necessary: Sign the register, whoever you are, and take the key. You can settle your bill in the morning.

“Thanks,” the new guest said, and he meant it.

No answer was forthcoming. The receptionist, or whoever the man behind the desk was, went back to the ice hockey scores.

The elevator wasn’t working.

When is a hotel room not a hotel room?

When is a hotel room not a hotel room?

The room upstairs looked like a room. There was a framed picture of an abandoned farmhouse on the wall, and a permanently fogged mirror in the bathroom. The hanger bar in the closet looked sturdy, and it was fairly high off the floor. The lonely man put his suitcase down by the door, hung up his jacket, and went to sit on the bed. Daylight faded on the coarse-fabric curtains. He watched it go, and decided to skip dinner.

He wasn’t hungry anyway.

He wasn’t hungry anyway.

L’hotel dell’uomo solitario

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Big Mary Comes To Hotel Kranepool

big mary 1.jpg

Big Mary barged into the Kranepool as though she owned the place. In fact, the moment she tore the rotating door off its axis and threw it out into the street, she did own the place. The receptionist hit the panic button, and ducked to cower under the front desk. Big Mary grabbed the key to the Penthouse Suite, went back outside and climbed the hotel’s facade all the way to the top.

big mary 7.JPG

She found the accommodations suitable: an enormous bed, a shower that worked, and plenty of towels. She stripped down on the revolving terrace for her afternoon nap.

The hotel went quiet again. The Manager didn’t want to be a fink and call the cops, but he was worried about what sort of mayhem the gigantic guest would unleash when she awoke. ‘Better placate her with food and drink,’ he thought, and got on the in-house phone for Room Service.

big mary 12.jpg

Timorous waiters set down a trough heaped with near-raw steaks and fried potatoes, and another with Gin&Tonic fixings by Her door, and scrammed as quietly as they could.

big mary 6.jpg

Rested and refreshed, Big Mary stomped away from the hotel and went on a rampage, crushing cars and people along the way. At the train station, thought by many to be our town’s main attraction, she grabbed the Super Chief’s locomotive, set it on full speed ahead, and used it for an unintended purpose. It didn’t take long. The earth shook. Her hair flew wild as she thrashed and roared like a dinosaur.

big mary 8 w train.jpg

Then she thundered off into the distance towards another town. Your town.

Big Mary viene al Kranepool

big mary 9.JPG

Girls' Night Out Inn

Hello, hello? Wanda on the phone with Brenda!

Hello, hello? Wanda on the phone with Brenda!

Wanda called Brenda, and Brenda called me. "Time for a party," she said, somewhat breathlessly. "For all of us who's left alive, that is."

Her husky voice evokes Sorority days, when we'd stay up all night doing whatever we wanted, and then mop up together the next afternoon. So I got on the phone too, and told Cindy to book us an extra-large Suite at the hotel where she's in charge of reservations. Cindy gives us highly favorable room rates, and she also plays a mean game of Doctor.

Our party outfits fit conveniently in a standard-size purse, with the toothbrushes and toys. Wanda always brings her camera, which is kinda bulky.

Wanda with her large-format picture-taking equipment.

Wanda with her large-format picture-taking equipment.

We're all divorcées by now. Marriage had a few good points, as I dimly recall. The trouble is that men just don't know how to keep romance fresh. Some of ‘em can't even be bothered to pick up their dirty underwear. Like my ex, for instance. That wasn't the main problem, but there are limits.

The best thing about Ladies' Hotel Nights is: no limits.

Women, girls and ladies, all together in a hotel room

Helpful hint to all you men out there: pick up your stuff. Maybe we'll invite you to our next party.

Things get wild!

A little mop-up action, afterwards. We feel sorry for the chambermaids, so we always leave big tips. I mean, who doesn’t like big tips?

La festa della donne in hotel

Pronto, Brenda? Sono Wanda. Senti…

Pronto, Brenda? Sono Wanda. Senti…

Wanda telefonò a Brenda, e Brenda chiamò me.

Brenda (a sinistra) e Norma!

Brenda (a sinistra) e Norma!

Siamo tutte divorziate, oramai.

A Happy Hotel Story

hotel paris.jpg

He was in town on business. She'd flown in from the Coast to visit an old friend who'd been hospitalized. Their rooms at the Hotel Paris, which isn't in Paris, France, or Paris, Texas, were on different floors.

Her suite boasted a skyline view. The window in his room looked out onto the hotel's loading dock, where not much went on.

eagle.jpg

They bumped into each other, sort of, in the lobby’s rotating door. He was already late for a make-or-break sales meeting. She was on the way in, more than ready for a long, hot shower after a grim night spent in medical atmospheres. Their eyes locked. They could've circled 'round and 'round each other in that rotating door forever.

He missed his meeting. The shower in her suite was more than big enough for two.

"Maybe I'm out of a job," he said, after a few preliminary rounds, "but I know I'm in love."

"With me?" she said.

"No other."

"You know, my Daddy could probably find something for you to do at his factory."

"Uh thanks, but blue collars just never seem to fit me right."

"Silly. I meant, at the managerial level. You look so good in a suit."

"What kinda factory is it?"

She had to think. "I dunno," she said, finally. But then an idea came. "He could set us up with a hotel, a place of our own, where we can stay for free and be happy together. Like this one, for instance, where we first met and fell in love. I'll get Daddy to buy the Hotel Paris."

"We can ask Mr Chow to open a restaurant in the lobby."

"Great idea," she said, happily. "See? You're already perfect for the job."

"Thanks boss," he said, but he was just kidding.

Her father was The Boss of an organized crime syndicate, but he didn't know that yet. Neither did she, really. Or rather, she preferred not to know.

When he learned the truth about who his father-in-law was, it was too late to pull out.

Nothing bad happened, as far as they knew.

Neither of them ever ventured down into the Paris Hotel’s basement. Unmarked trucks pulled in at the loading dock in the small hours of the morning. The cardboard boxes the men dumped down there might not have contained anything more horrible than money that needed to be laundered.

Una felice storia d'hotel

hotel paris2.jpg

"Di me?" chiese lei.

"Nessun'altra."

Lei dovette pensarci.

Back Issues of Grand Hôtel

1964-GRAND-HOTEL-primo-omaggio.jpg

Before there was Hotel Kranepool, there was Grand Hôtel.

grand-hotel-cover 5.jpg

A parallel universe of spectacular palaces with ivory telephones in every Suite-with-a-View, packed with celebrity guests and liveried staff. Beautiful bikini’ed women wait poolside for their charming billionaire princes to appear. Theatrical impresarios and movie producers observe the rotating door in the lobby, perpetually on the lookout for ingenues still unaware of their own star-power.

Piles of yellowed glossy paper, gnawed by moths and time. Flea market-fodder to be thumbed through by the nostalgic elderly. Colorful stars of the past shine feebly on black-and-white shadows of the present.

Customer Ratings Rule Supreme

Prepare to bare all, ye who enter…

Prepare to bare all, ye who enter…

All hotels re-model and renovate periodically. Some establishments go for a coherent, standardized look, others prefer to boldly mix styles, proportions and colors. There’s no right or wrong, where Suite décor’s concerned. What makes the difference, these days, is customer reviews.

We asked a few esteemed guests what they thought of the Kranepool’s recent makeover:

“We got lotsa closet space!”

“The prices at the Kranepool Bar & Grille seem kinda suspiciously low, but I ain’t complainin’, know what I mean?”

“‘Ample Parking in Rear’ is an understatement.”

“I refuse to stay in a hotel where there’s no art on the walls. Exposure to art makes me feel…I dunno, more cultured or something.”

This may sound childish, but I’m always afraid there’s somethin’ under the bed.”
