Manuel Cossu “Il caso Elvis : indizi e prove”

Sono passati pochi mesi dalla mostra di Manuel Cossu “Anatomia della Solitudine” a Pietrasanta, e meno di un anno dalla pubblicazione di due raccolte di disegni pubblicati da Andante Books, “Cops” e “26.12.1958, Giovanni XXIII a Regina Coeli”, volumi presentati in varie città con crescente successo. Eppure Cossu è artista schivo, dal tratto ruvido e impetuoso, con poche concessioni all’estetica “classica” ma con grande attenzione ai contenuti emotivi, al fattore umano, con stile immediato e riconoscibile all’istante. Pesca i personaggi delle sue indagini interiori dal passato più o meno prossimo, dalla realtà tangibile o dal variegato oceano di cinema, televisione, letteratura colta, letteratura popolare e, visto che da quel mondo lì proviene, musica. In principio è stato Dee Dee Ramone, conosciuto e assurto a una sorta di angelo custode (il libro “Apparizioni” lo fa risorgere ubiquamente, ed è molto tipico del modus operandi di Cossu : considerare tempi e presenze come variabili dell’immaginazione, rendendo tutto tragicamente e/o ironicamente possibile). L’altra caratteristica evidente è, sia in personaggi anonimi, i Cops ad esempio, sia in figure dello starsystem o glamour, la componente problematica : solitudine, abbandono, crisi. Senza moralismi ma con sentiti moti di solidarietà e condivisione. Da qui la scelta di un segno istintivo, apparentemente velocissimo, ma di grande espressività. Un mondo che miracolosamente cattura, se solo ci si abbandona senza pregiudizio. 

Quello che Stanza 251 presenta è un ultimo ciclo di lavori dedicati ad Elvis Presley, l’Elvis meno bello e più in crisi, giovane o al tramonto, al mondo che gli ha girato intorno, ai fan sparsi per il globo. Un altro pretesto per indagare vizi e virtù, eccitazioni, ansie e demoni del genere umano. In perfetto “stile Cossu”, rock’n’roll in sottofondo, antidepressivi sul comodino.

Manuel Cossu "The Elvis Case: Clues and Evidence"

A few months have passed since Manuel Cossu's exhibition "Anatomy of Solitude" in Pietrasanta, and less than a year since the publication of two collections of drawings published by Andante Books, "Cops" and "December 26, 1958, John XXIII at Regina Coeli," volumes presented in various cities with growing success. Yet Cossu is a shy artist, with a rough and impetuous style, making few concessions to "classical" aesthetics but paying great attention to emotional content and the human factor, with an immediate and instantly recognizable style. He draws the characters of his inner investigations from the more or less recent past, from tangible reality or from the varied ocean of cinema, television, highbrow literature, popular literature and, given that he comes from that world, music. In the beginning, it was Dee Dee Ramone, whom he knew and who became a sort of guardian angel (the book Apparizioni resurrects him ubiquitously, which is very typical of Cossu's modus operandi: considering time and presence as variables of the imagination, making everything tragically and/or ironically possible). The other obvious characteristic is, both in anonymous characters, such as the Cops, and in figures from the star system or glamour, the problematic component: loneliness, abandonment, crisis. Without moralizing but with heartfelt feelings of solidarity and sharing. Hence the choice of an instinctive, apparently very fast, but highly expressive style. A world that miraculously captivates, if only one abandons oneself without prejudice.

What Room 251 presents is a final cycle of works dedicated to Elvis Presley, the less handsome and more troubled Elvis, young or in decline, to the world that revolved around him, to his fans scattered across the globe. Another pretext for investigating the vices and virtues, excitements, anxieties, and demons of humankind. In perfect "Cossu style," rock 'n' roll in the background, antidepressants on the bedside table.
