Surface Coverage

When prestigious design/interior decoration/anthropology quarterly N*st emerged from cyber-hybernation to publish a major spread on Hotel Kranepool, a lively European title wanted in on the act. Imitation is sincere flattery. Free publicity in slick magazines translates into reservations galore.

bidet sink hk wpap.jpg

To bidet or not to bidet? There’s a philosophical world of difference between Old World and New in this matter. Hotel Kranepool’s opinion: “Take a shower. Take two showers, what the hell? Hot water’s included in the price of your suite.”

hk wpap suite 7B .jpg

Every day in Suite 7/B is a good hair day, with an orange spread on the bed.

Cellular communication? Boring! The cordless unit has zombified the planet. Get on the rotary analog phone provided in every Suite instead. Dial a room number at random. Stand back, or lie back, for whatever live action heads your way through the Hotel Kranepool’s live wires. Same-sex threesomes are not only allowed, they’re vehemently encouraged!

While Hotel Kranepool would prefer that guests not scuff or otherwise damage the furniture, what guests choose to do in their Suites is their affair. We clean up afterwards. One courteous guest provided her own protection against stained sofas.

Good Hotel design isn’t only the inside. Take a peep at the Kranepool’s exterior. It’s right in front of the posterior.

What goes on in the Suite above yours? What goes hump in the night upstairs? It’s easy to find out, thanks to Hotel Kranepool’s patented Flor-Vue periscopes.

What you show and when you show it makes all the difference. The Kranepool attracts and seduces its classy clientele with double-pane windows and curtains inspired by Nature’s bounty.

The Executive Suite is for executives only! When are naughty interns ever gonna learn? After a Room Service Spanky or two, that’s when.

The Charlotte Rampling Suite is booked solid months and months in advance. The enigmatic screen goddess’ spirit is said to pervade the rooms’ atmosphere. This is due to a custom fragrance spritzed in through the AC/heating unit. Management sez: Charlotte is in the details.

spread tea hk wpap.jpg

bidet:sink 2hk wpap.png

body bag stain hk wpap.png

Pensiamo noi a pulire, dopo.

A Pornosopher and a Poet on Hotels

In the dark silent hours between a recent December 21st and 22nd, the Night Porter took a novel by Henry Miller and a volume of poems by Philip Larkin from the Kranepool’s shelf of books left inadvertently or on purpose by guests. Human beings want life to have meaning. They look for signs that imply significance wherever they can. Night porters are only human.

larkin red.jpg

Holidays were reserved for hotels. My friend and I would go to the most unfashionable, even the most unthinkable places. To drink together, mostly, but we’d also go for long walks in the fields and along the beaches. In the dreary towns, we mused on what was on offer in the shops before we visited the churches and graveyards. In the evening, in our room, life was sexy underwear, and a bath afterwards.

hotel bunker larkin.jpg

Friday Night At The Royal Station Hotel

Light spreads darkly downwards from the high

Clusters of lights over empty chairs

That face each other, coloured differently.

Through open doors, the dining-room declares

A larger loneliness of knives and glass

And silence laid like carpet. A porter reads

An unsold evening paper. Hours pass,

And all the salesmen have gone back to Leeds,

Leaving full ashtrays in the Conference Room.

In shoeless corridors, the lights burn. How

Isolated, like a fort, it is -

The headed paper, made for writing home

(If home existed) letters of exile: Now

Night comes on. Waves fold behind villages.

—Philip Larkin

Hotels were a contradiction: places to stay when you had no money. If your clothes weren’t too dirty and you had a decent suitcase, the receptionist wouldn’t insist on payment in advance. You could stay a week, breakfast included, before you got the hard tap on the shoulder that precedes the heave-ho. And any cooze you brought upstairs thought you must be somebody, since you lived in a hotel.

ossuary miller.jpg

The stabbing horror of life is not contained in calamities and disasters, because these things wake one up and one gets very familiar and intimate with them and finally they become tame again. No, it is more like being in a hotel room in Hoboken let us say, and just enough money in one’s pocket for another meal.

Isolata,

Slick Hotel Design

Management was enthused when N*st Magazine wrote to announce their intention to devote a whole issue to Hotel Kranepool. They’d be sending a photographer and a writer whose names induced mass vertigo in the Executive Office Suite.

“Don’t change a thing,” the magazine’s editor said, in conclusion.

A photocopy of The Letter was posted in the employee area. “We want everything at the Kranepool to be exactly as it was and has always been. This means YOU.”

“This doesn’t, however, mean no dusting and/or vacuuming,” Management added. “Employees must wipe fingerprints from all surfaces they come into human contact with. The plants, furthermore, must continue to be watered and spoken to in a loving manner. Their leaves must still be gently wiped with damp cloths.”

The following are excerpts from the N*st Spread:

Grand Hotel Design

Diciamo a TE.”

The Lobbyist (2)

One of the day clerks was still behind the reception counter when the Night Porter came on duty. That’s highly unusual: diurnals tend to avoid nocturnals. He’d already clocked out, but wasn’t anxious to begin another lonely night at home. The weather hasn’t been exactly clement lately. He said there was a woman who hung out in the lobby.

Curtains exist to hang, as do veils

Curtains exist to hang, as do veils

“She just sits there,” he said, and shuddered. “At first I thought she was waiting for someone. Then I thought she’d only come in to warm up, or to watch the last yellow leaves fall.”

The Kranepool is surrounded on three sides by a stand of ginkgoes.

The Day Clerk opened the cupboard where Management leaves a bottle of rum to help porters and receptionists get past difficult moments in hotel life.

“No thanks,” the Night Porter said, when he passed it along.

Lobbies are public spaces. Not everyone knows this.

Lobbies are public spaces. Not everyone knows this.

“People come in all the time, I know,” he said, in a slightly steadier voice. “They wait for trains, read magazines, watch the tide of humanity come and go, but they usually only stay an hour or so.” He took another slug, put the bottle away. “Does anyone just sit in the lobby all night, staring off into space?”

“Not that I’ve noticed,” the Night Porter said.

Not responsible for left luggage

Not responsible for left luggage

There are certain things one should never say out loud. It’s not going to rain. There won’t be a war. I just know this is the winning lottery ticket.

The Night Porter returned from a round just after one in the morning, and returned the Be Right Back sign to its drawer. He noticed a woman seated in one of the leather club chairs in the corner opposite the TV set, which hasn’t been turned on in a long time. She stared, but not into space.

She wagged a finger. The nail was lacquered so red it flashed in the low light of the lobby. “Come here little man,” she said. “I’ve been waiting for you.”

Waiting room only

A murder of ravens that had been looking into the lobby from the palm trees that wave so gracefully before the Hotel Kranepool’s front entrance flew away in a frenzy of black wings.

“Entra gente, lo so,” disse, rinfrancato.

Heinrich Böll: I’m not.

Dirk Bogarde: In the mirror, you are.

Heinrich Böll: You needn’t be testy. My anti-Nazi credentials are nearly irreproachable. You, on the other hand, performed in that obscene film.

Dirk Bogarde: The worst productions can spark transcendental performances. I consider The Night Porter one of my best roles. And I got to grope cute little Charlotte Rampling.

Heinrich Böll: Oh, but I thought...

Dirk Bogarde: Few people are entirely one way or the other. But tell me, do you really feel you deserved that Prize?

Heinrich Böll: Honestly, I do. But I’d trade it for five minutes in a mirrored elevator with Charlotte Rampling.

The Grand Hotel Frookie

A colleague writes from Scotland:

We read An Advertising World Adventure (see HK 73) with great interest. We’re located in a fairly remote part of northern Scotland, and seldom feel included in the globalized scheme of things.

Och! Welcome!

Och! Welcome!

The local tourism industry is hardly frenzied. The Grand Hotel Freuchie—pronounced “Frookie”—gets by with minimal staff. Since I inherited the establishment from an eccentric great-aunt, I’ve been Manager, concierge, cook, chambermaid and Night Porter. I also run the Freuchie Used Books & Records boutique, which is in the same building, on the High Street, along with Highlands Bait n’ Tackle, McHaggis and the luthier’s workshop. Mr MacTavish also fixes bagpipes.

He used it to catch a 17 kg. salmon in the Quaich, the local river which gushes into Loch Freuchie.

A(nother) Quiet Night at the Kranepool

Without electricity they’re silent.

Without electricity they’re silent.

Late autumn is yellow, and then brown. Business travel and tourism fall off like leaves. They flutter in the wind, are briefly tossed by waves before they begin their descent of the continental shelf. The hotel rests in peace. The only sound comes from the dishwasher that turns on automatically when the last few customers have left the Kranepool Bar & Grille.

The restaurant’s blue neon sign buzzes out for the night.

He dreams of summer

He dreams of summer

Despite the general lifelessness, rounds must be made. The quiet time is when break-ins occur. Bums find a chink in the hotel’s armor and score a free warm, dry place for the night. Management disapproves. If only the winos would learn to clean up after themselves when they vacate the premises.

A homeless dream of warmth, dryness and freedom

Night is when kids on their way home from the discotheques in town throw rocks through dark windows.

Un(‘altr)a notte tranquilla al Kranepool

Sono mute, ma non inespressive

Fine autunno è giallo e poi marrone. L’albergo riposa in pace.

Guest Artist in Residence: Joe Courtney

Hotel Kranepool Management, in order to bring culture to guests and vice-versa, occasionally invites Art World figures to transform the establishment’s public spaces.

This week, they gave the nod to Joe Courtney, the Art Director of the hotel’s Public Relations blog.

Extremely little is known about Joe Courtney. He wore a magenta Louise Brooks wig and mirrored sunglasses for the check-in formalities. The trip from the hotel’s basement to the Reception Desk isn’t a long one, but it spans several metaphysical worlds.

One short flight of steps for a subterranean hermit, interstellar overdrive for an artist.

A Warm Welcome/Una calorosa accoglienza

A Warm Welcome/Una calorosa accoglienza

Why do you rely so heavily on old T&A photographs?

Joe Courtney: For their element of mystery, mostly. Where, who are these old ladies now? I feel bound by some weird physical law to let these girls who were once adolescent fantasy creatures tell their stories. Even if it’s only my interpretation of what they might’ve said, if anyone had asked them about their lives back then. To me, that’s sorta why art exists, right?

The Enigma of Yellow/L’enigma del giallo

The Enigma of Yellow/L’enigma del giallo

Describe your life, in the studio and out.

Joe Courtney: My studio is underground, in every sense of the word. There’s no natural light down there, not even neutrinos can penetrate to those depths. But I’m aware of the world around the Kranepool. I know that humankind flies around the world in gleaming machines, and that the universal language barrier has been dismantled. I love to draw, on paper, with a pencil and a rubber eraser. The rest is just stuff to throw at the world.

Prisoners of Their Time/Prigionieri del loro tempo

Prisoners of Their Time/Prigionieri del loro tempo

Are you comfortable in the Futurist Mae West Suite?

Joe Courtney: Took me a while to get used to the glare and vast uncluttered surfaces. There’s a fantastic view of the swimming pool. (Editor’s note: Hotel Kranepool has no bathing facility, at least not on the premises) Room service this morning was meatloaf, and the bellhops who brought it were dressed in macramé bikinis. (Editor’s note: the Kranepool provides no such service. Meatloaf, however, has always been a popular selection on the Kranepool Bar & Grille’s menu.)

Shadowy Beings Influence Our Choices/Esseri spettrali influiscono sulle nostre decisioni

Shadowy Beings Influence Our Choices/Esseri spettrali influiscono sulle nostre decisioni

How does it feel to know that your installation will be gone in a week?

Joe Courtney: In a way, it’s already gone. But I’m glad, because it means other artists whom I admire and respect will soon enliven the same spaces.

Guest Artist in Residence: Joe Courtney

La maschera umana/The Mask of Humanity

La maschera umana/The Mask of Humanity

Nemmeno i neutrini possono penetrare fino a quelle profondità.

Calore umano/Human Warmth

Calore umano/Human Warmth

A Diamond as Forever as the Ritz

A colleague writes from Los Angeles:

I’ve been in the hotel biz a few years. I’m a chambermaid, and I always thought those letters sent by ‘colleagues’ to Hotel Kranepool were fake.

industrial grand hotel.png

But then one morning when I clocked in, the Night Porter, who was on his way out, said to go clean up Room 251 first, because he heard some strange noises in there during his rounds. I found this note on the writing desk near the window. Which faces onto the pool, by the way.

BH note girl.jpg

That would’ve been weird enough, but then I went back down to the lobby and checked the register because I thought some celebrity might’ve written the note. Instead, I found out that no one was registered to stay in that room the night before, which was November 2.

station2 note.jpg

That’s one thing about the hotel business: live and learn.

green cart girls.jpg

  1. Trombare

  2. Dormire

  3. Iperdosarsi

  4. Guardare la tivù

  5. Chiamare per il servizio in camera

  6. Piangere

terraces 2 girl.jpg

The Limbo Twin Suite’s Mini-Bar

GP: Does your wife really look like a gorilla?

MF: Only when I order her to put on the ape costume. This little fridge contains: a box of pretzel sticks, the beers mentioned above, red aperitif crud in a bottle shaped like something high school chemistry lab, a screw-top bottle of white wine from the hillsides above the lake near Lausanne, a pair of Kit Kat chocolate-covered wafers in wax-papered packages reminiscent of the Swiss flag and a wonderful jazz club somewhere in Fantasyland, a clear plastic sack of vacuum-packed peanuts from Plains, Georgia in the southern USA, an almost insultingly small blue bottle of German bubbly with a gold-foil wrapper around the cork, which almost certainly shall never explode in festivity, since this joint’s Management has the audacity to charge over a hundred currency units for it.

GP: The bottle opener is the same color as the pistol Michel Piccoli used to execute the lovely Anita Pallenberg in Dillinger Is Dead.

gloves:smoke perec.jpg

MF: Hey you’re French. You should be able to cook dinner for two with what’s in this ridiculous refrigerator. I think the thing in the closet is a microwave oven.

GP: (checks the closet) It’s a safe for guests’ valuables, for when they leave the room. You have to invent your own combination. Here, put your gold watch in there, and I’ll see if I can guess your secret code. I used to be good at this sort of thing. Oh, and I get to keep your watch if I’m right. Only one try.

yello hose ferreri.jpg

MF: It’s not gold, you know. It’s gold-plated platinum. (He jiggles the safe’s top-secret combination keys) OK mister smarty-pants, go ahead.

GP: (doesn’t even think about it) Two five one asterisk.

MF: Wrong!

GP: Hm. Step aside and let me try. (the safe opens) You stand revealed, sir, as an artist.

panty flash ferreri.jpg

GP: (senza nemmeno pensarci) Due cinque uno asterisco.

MF: Sbagliato!

An Advertising World Adventure

In the digitized era, there’s no need for advertising firms to reserve private flights and book solid the high-floor suites of hotels in exotic locations. Creative directors can stare at their colleagues on their computer screens as their colleagues stare at them on their computer screens. From these ethereal interactions, product names, ad campaigns and corporate logos are produced and transmitted at the speed of light.

So why did the firm Obelard & Delacroy reserve Hotel Kranepool’s Pina Bausch Penthouse for the entire month of Rocktember? And why did they Concorde in, when it’s less than an hour away by hovercraft from their home office in The Big City?

Management honored their quaint telegram request to stock the suite’s many MiniBars with mayonnaise and laxatives.

A bizarre request

A bizarre request

The O&D party arrived, roisterously.

A sometimes unpleasant aspect of a Night Porter’s job is after-hours room service. Bring up some cold beer, cigars and a fresh deck of cards? No problem. Arrange a little company? Sure why not.

The phone at the Reception Desk rang insistently.

Write an entire advertising campaign for a mysterious product code-named Frookie? Before the contractual midnight deadline expires, like, in five minutes? In exchange for a $20 tip?

Ad executive in distress

Ad executive in distress

“What is Frookie, Ma’am? Is it something you eat?”

“Well I suppose you could, if there was nothing else around and you were starved.”

“Might it perhaps improve a person’s appearance?”

“Oh Frookie is 100% pure sex appeal. For sure.”

“Ma’am, why don’t you just punch G—gle Slogans, G—gle Spots and G—gle Jingles on your laptop?”

“Mister, we work hard on Madison Avenue. Do you think we come on these junkets just to bust our humps even more? This is how we get to really know each other, like, in the flesh. OK, make it a $50 tip. But make it snappy. Make it zing!”

O&D’s group creative director hung up, hard.

Avventura pubblicitaria

Nessun problema. Un po’ di compagnia al femminile? Perché no.

The Limbo Twin Suite: Room Service Seafood Breakfast

starring Capt. Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Patrick O’Brian

cousteau o'brian 1.jpg

Patrick O’Brian: I don’t remember ordering room service, but as surprises go, this one’s pleasant.

Jacques-Yves Cousteau: That chambermaid looked as though she wanted to be included in the meal. We shouldn’t have let her go so quickly. And we should’ve given her a tip, a big one.

PO’B: (hoists covers off several plates) Ah look, lobster en gelée, coquilles St. Jacques and, for me, I suppose, a kippered herring. You know, I always wondered about cuisine aboard Calypso. There’s a passage in one of your delightful books about a meal of giant squid, but I imagine the fare was generally much better than that.

J-YC: We had a saying aboard: a whore in the galley, a cook in the cabin. As far as that went, we always fared much better in port than at sea. A dive in the Red Sea is heaven, but the women of the Gulf of Aqaba were worth an eternity in the other place. The thing I like to eat most is sea urchin. But there is none of that most female ambrosia present upon this rolling tray.

PO’B: Food is all well and good, but what always came through, for me, in your television documentaries, the most beautiful ever filmed, was, to put it simply, love.

obrian detail.png

J-YC: Your books were always in the locker by my bunk. The 18th-19th century world you brought to life is where I loved to get lost, shipwrecked if you will, during the quiet times of Calypso’s journeys, which were much more frequent than you might suppose. I wish I’d had your novelist’s discipline when I was at the Naval Academy. I might not have been punished so often, and I might’ve published a novel myself. That was my dream.

PO’B: My dream was underwater demolition. I mean, I enjoyed libraries, where I read log books and sailors’ letters, and studied obsolete designs for ships and out-of-date marine charts for days on end. But what I really wanted, in the end, was to blow stuff up. At least I got to do so on the page.

cousteau detail.png

J-YC: Believe me, destruction by subterfuge is not a party. Sending men to their watery graves is hardly exciting. At least, not until the action’s over and you can talk about it with your comrades in the galley after eight bells.

PO’B: Or over breakfast in Hotel Kranepool’s oneiric, disquieting Limbo Twin Lounge.

J-YC: Excuse me, but the sign on the door says, Suite.

PO’B: I know. Limbo Twin Lounge just sounds better. These coquilles St. Jacques are divine. Do try some. (serves)

J-YC: (samples) Ah yes. Heavenly.

cousteau detail 2.png

PO’B: Oppure a colazione qui nell’onirico, inquietante Limbo Twin Lounge all’Hotel Kranepool.

PO’B: Lo so. Ma “Limbo Twin Lounge” suona meglio. Queste coquilles St. Jacques sono divine. Assaggiane una. (serve)

J-YC: (assaggia) Ah sì. Paradisiache.

Guests Reveal Themselves, part 2!

Whoa! HK 66: Guests Reveal Themselves struck a chord!

Hotel Kranepool’s mailbox, and the Suggestion Box by the main staircase are stuffed daily with fresh exhibitionistic imagery and self-indulgent stories. Here we go again:

A treasured guest demonstrates her latest invention.

A treasured guest demonstrates her latest invention.

Sexy underwear is a secret that I don’t have to share with anyone but the mirror. My latest invention is the Sexy Underwear-o-Meter, which attaches to any reflective surface and indicates the degree of satisfaction.

Sharing is one of the many splendid things that friends are for.

Sharing is one of the many splendid things that friends are for.

My friend Spanky and I are none too satisfied with the men we married. Our husbands are also best friends who devote their weekends to ballgames, fishing trips and a pastime they call “frookying”. So we really have no choice but to check into the Kranepool, where we can engage in weekend-long neglected wives’ Black-and-White versus Faded Kodachrome negligee duels.

A mirror on a hotel wall is worth two on the floor or another one over the bed.

A mirror on a hotel wall is worth two on the floor or another one over the bed.

Who are you, Secret Self? You live in a warm lavender world where even the filmiest underwear is superfluous, where black hair turns silky blond, and home is a museum installation by a world-famous artist who works with light. Every time I look at you, a secret existence made accessible by a signature in a hotel register and a ride in a mirrored elevator is revealed.

Bombs and hotel bathrooms don’t mix.

Bombs and hotel bathrooms don’t mix.

No room says “home” like the bathroom, especially if that bathroom is in a hotel room. There exists a snapshot of Daisy Miller, or maybe Lee Miller, who was either Henry Miller’s daughter or his girlfriend, who’s just stripped down for a nice long soak in the private tub of a recently defeated dictator. Hotel bathrooms make me feel as though I’ve liberated the world from evil.

Mirror-gazing is a game boys can play too.

Mirror-gazing is a game boys can play too.

I like mirrors. I like looking in them, but I’m not obsessed or addicted. I spend as much time at the gym as I do in hotel rooms, and both places pay off big. I guess if I wanted to work in an office or a factory, I’d get a job in an office or a factory. But I don’t, so I won’t. You can go right ahead, though.

The view from Hotel Kranepool’s Reading Deck.

What me and my friend Wanda like to do in hotels is read. We go through a book a night, rain or shine, clothes or no clothes. I like nude detective stories. Wanda goes for books with pictures of nude people.

Chi sei, o me stessa segreta?

A Nightporter Fades Away

A colleague writes from Kyoto:

Certain musicians whose careers in the Western world have diminuendo’ed experience re-birth in Japan. We are a nostalgic nation that reveres style and substance.

ds drop 2.jpg

The establishment where I work nights is a hotel, but also not a hotel. The Kitano Ryokan is the embodiment of what Management has determined the average Japanese person imagines hostelry was like in dream-time Edo.

hk ds ryokan 1 .png

To assist the nights’ passage in a hotel with no electricity, I listen to neo-romantic music on my obsolete miniaturized personal stereo. Imagine my wonder when a favorite wistful song came to life in the person of a perfect stranger, an idol from my teenage years. Elegant in his bleary disarray, his abundant blond hair faded to gray, he flopped through a shoji screen, but gently, without destroying it. He approached the reception area.

ds ryokan 3.jpg

He needed a room. I led the way down the rice-paper corridor to the Suite of a Thousand Cranes. “You’re an exquisite maiden,” he said, and I nearly died of delight. “You walk with the delicacy of a geisha. Are you one?”

“Not I,” I said, sadly, and asked if he wanted the company of a genuine geisha for the remainder of the night. He requested a koto instead.

ds hotel 5.jpg

For one heavenly night, I slid the WalkMan into a fold of my kimono and listened to a revered neo-romantic heart-throb work through variations of his popular tune about those who take shelter from the rain and find pleasure in romantic hotel rooms at night.

Like nightporters, dreams go, dreams slip away.

His tour was sold out all the way from Hokkaido to Fukuoka prefecture, but he neglected to pay for the suite and walked off into the dawn light with a silk bathrobe. Management docked its cost from my salary.

Un portiere di notte svanisce

Una collega scrive da Kyoto:

Certi musicisti tramontati nel mondo occidentale rinascono in Giappone. Siamo una nazione nostalgica. Veneriamo stile e sostanza.

“Purtroppo no,” dissi, triste.

An Eye on the Street

A retired colleague writes from Hamburg:

The hotel was only a short walk from the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

The reception desk was up a narrow flight of steps that smelled of sweat and tobacco. I didn’t know it yet, but that’s the perfume ambitious dreams leave behind when they float away.

Come and meet those dancing feet

Come and meet those dancing feet

The ash-complected receptionist wheezed when he spoke. The key he slid across the counter hung on a yellow plastic rhomboid whose red letters and numbers had worn off almost all the way. Someone had smeared excrement on the walls of the hallway that led to Room 1690.

For what it cost, the room was spacious. The window framed a view of Rockefeller Center. A peep arcade across the avenue called Show World had a sign out front that flashed, Grand Opening! The traffic noise was almost gentle.

Show World sounded all right, but I wanted to enter Career World. I’d hung my hopes on the next morning’s job interview. Sleep proved impossible, so I went to an all-night cinema on 42nd Street. One of the late-shows that washed over the unwashed audience featured a young Italian actress whose big dark eyes pulled me in forever.

Neo-Real Times Square

Neo-Real Times Square

The editors at the magazine where I wanted to spend my working life were in the mood for professional murder. One of them, who wore her eyeglasses on a string of pearls, said, “We’re not a match,” and shoved my cartoons and caricatures across her desk in a final way.

On the way back to the Bus Station, I looked up at skyscrapers, dramatic clouds, and the faces of ambitious young women an artist had painted on the marquee of a defunct dance-hall. The bus to Keekatchie rolled past them again slowly, to make them even more unforgettable.

Women of the city

Women of the city

After that disaster, I went to work on cargo ships. At harbor in Naples, Trieste or Livorno, I’d look around the streets and squares for the young actress with eyes like scalene triangles of a warm starry night. She was always somewhere else. The painted ladies on 42nd Street were gone, the last time I went back.

Women of the dunes

Women of the dunes

Waves, salt and endless to-and-fro lost their flavor. I jumped ship in Germany, and got a job at a hotel on the Reeperbahn. The Lorelei’s not far from the docks, where you can get cartons of contraband French cigarettes if you know who to ask.

Stanza con vista su Show World

Stanza con vista su Show World

Onde, salmastro e interminabile andirivieni persero sapore.

Holiday in the Dark

Management left a type-written note in the Night Porter’s cubby hole. “Office: after clock-out.” The next day’s date was in the upper right corner. The Night Porter nervously spent what he thought would be his last shift at the Kranepool. ‘What’d I do wrong?‘ The list of possible offenses kept him thoughtful till dawn.

Bleary 3 a.m.

Bleary 3 a.m.

His knock the next morning was tentative. Eventually, “Enter.”

The Manager named Obergast was behind the vast oaken desk.

“Got the note,” the Night Porter said. He was certain the next thing he’d get was The Sack.

Obergast shifted his glasses to his forehead, slid a sheet of paper into the business section of green baize before him. “You need a break. Time to hit the beach.”

“But you sent me to the beach just last winter. It was...” He didn’t want to seem ungrateful.

“What’s the matter? You don’t like the beach? Everyone likes the beach, capeesh? Besides, we want you to send us reports on how things run there.”

Reflections on a theoretical beach

Reflections on a theoretical beach

The bus trip seemed longer, and the driver was even less friendly, in the heat. “Last stop,” he said. “Get off.”

The Night Porter walked along a canal in the dark. The buildings were set up for a party to which no one had been invited.

A neon sign flashed disconsolately: Luna Lido, Luna Lido.

The main door was open. The lobby was deserted. No one objected when the Night Porter took the Penthouse Suite key from the rack behind the counter. If nothing else, there was a wide and unimpeded view of Beach Resort World.

The Night Porter unpacked his NightVision binocular-camera and began to scribble notes. He worked this way for the duration of his holiday.

Gangster hideout redhead

A big guy who wears heavy raincoats on sunny days gulps coffee on the porch in the morning, then leaves the building. The lady with lots of red hair is presumably his girlfriend. She never wears anything. She takes loads of ultraviolet upon herself. No crowds gather on the sidewalk below, however. There’s no pedestrian traffic at all.

The stylist’s love nest

The stylist’s love nest

Sources say this Penthouse resident is a celebrity fashion designer. He must run some sort of business: his secretary is a blur of action, too busy even to pull down her skirt. Neither of them ever leaves the building. The over-designed lamps burn all night.

Tinseltown state of mind

Tinseltown state of mind

Show biz is where you make it. A film crew set up on the balcony of the Hollywood Hotel (red arrow) and spent the afternoon capturing whatever was going on in that Suite. When they were done and had packed up their equipment, this young lady in yellow came out and showed the world which part of her it could kiss.

Lady Luck rubs it in

Lady Luck rubs it in

This entire structure is a gambling joint. The fiends of chance stay indoors, intent on loss and gain. This woman spends her evenings on the roof, dressed only in an eyeshade (shown), and slathers moontan lotion on her private parts (not shown, or not here). A siren rings like clockwork at midnight, and she reënters the building. It’s possible she’s there to represent the Blindfolded Goddess. Not Justice, the other one.

A game of Blind Shrimp Cocktail

A game of Blind Shrimp Cocktail

“Mr Shrimp” is a blatant cover for a brothel. The ladies in the picture lean on their windowsills. They seem lonely, rather than bored. No one goes in, or out. Cars roll by, but the drivers don’t look up. The street smells of stale fry-oil and fish, but if Mr Shrimp has any customers, they enter from the alleyway in back of the building.

“Ufficio: dopo timbro cartellino.”

“Siamo giunti a destinazione,” disse, secco. “Scendi.”

Amore e gamberetti nello stesso locale

Amore e gamberetti nello stesso locale

“The first thing I do when I enter a hotel room is remove all my clothes. I’ve done this since I was a little girl. The only reason I can think of for this behavior is that I want everything to be different from how it is at home.”

Down in the Dead Hotel

Joseph Mitchell migrated to New York from the South to become a political journalist. That idea flew somewhere else. He haunted the fish market and hotels, and wrote about such places and their people for a great magazine. Then he stopped.

He still wandered the city, haunted his places and wrote, but never handed in another story for publication. He still went to his office at the magazine on work days, and the magazine paid him for it, for decades.

doorway toilet secretary.jpg

The city he’d come to as a young man was on its way out. He roved the shadows of places that’d been torn down, gathered remnants from defunct hotels: doorknobs, towels, silver-plated utensils. He filled his apartment with them.

A hotel lobby is a public place. Once it was usual for city dwellers to live in hotels. The lobby was everyone’s living room.

joe, bowery babe.jpg

Mitchell attended life as it went on in the living rooms of Bowery flophouses. He wasn’t there to gawk. He drank and raved, did what flophouse denizens do.

Then he wrote about what happened.

roof nudes mcsorley girls.jpg

Until he felt he couldn’t do it any more. The city he wrote about had become a dream. He was a ghost in an office, but it was the kind of office that those who want to do what he did dream about.

Those low hotels are gone. Mitchell’s office is gone too, or has become something other than what it once was. The streets and places have the same names, but any other similarity is purely historical, and coincidental.

ruins mermaid flop front drunk.jpg

A young couple recently checked into the Kranepool as “Mr & Mrs Gould”. They left behind a copy of Joseph Mitchell’s bestseller anthology, and a partial manuscript. The book went onto a shelf in the lobby, the loose pages into the shredder. Except for this scrap, which the Night Porter found tacked to the bulletin board in the Management Office, where he wasn’t officially supposed to be.

joe, hotel, yellow.png

"On the bus ride down to the Big City, we talked about the Hare Krishnas, or some hippie commune where we might stay. Bat Norton had scrawled a few hotel names on an envelope, cheap places he said we could try. They were all on the Bowery, the last resort of bums. The flophouses smelled of second-hand alcohol and piss.

Home was an increasingly cage-like trailer stuffed with empty vodka bottles and dirty clothes. Pop was unemployed and depressed.

We looked around a while, then stopped on a corner in the light of a movie marquee. We didn’t know what to do. It was cold and getting dark. A woman shrieked in one of the crummy buildings, and the sound started a bunch of men laughing. Whatever hung in the air between me and Big Babs set like concrete.

The rummie at the desk of the Kranepool Arms (n.b. no relation) asked if we were married. I was about to say oh yes of course sir, but Big Babs said, "We're not married. We just want to be together tonight, if that's all right with you."

The guy shrugged, and forked over a key on a wood fob that looked like it’d unlock the toilet at the rear of a gas station.

An outhouse would’ve been an improvement on where Big Babs and I spent our high school honeymoon night, but there was a bunk and there was us and there was no other world."

joe sign tits.jpg

entryway sign girl joe.jpg

bowery babe detail.png

A Digital Postcard from e-Germany

A retired colleague from Rusteck writes:

Mass tourism gravitates towards the planet's beauty spots, just as bombs once fell on military-industrial sites. Devastation and Disney-fication are the result.
