Life and Death on the TEE

A colleague writes from somewhere in Europe:

‘An exciting time to be alive,’ I thought, every time I started work. Another chance to see the world, or at least its great railway stations.

As the night porter on international trains, my job was to collect overnight passengers’ documents for border inspection, ensure their comfort, and see that they got off at their desired destinations.

train 1.png

One night in Marseilles, a woman boarded as the train rolled out of the station. I was about to shut the door. She ran down the platform, held out a hand. I took it. “You shouldn’t do that,” I said. “Terribly dangerous.”

Instead of a ticket, she produced several large-denomination banknotes. “That should cover it,” she said.

“Where are you going?”

She said she hadn’t decided. I asked for her passport.

“You’ll have to finesse that part,” she said. “Keep the change from whatever the trip costs. And now I need to lie down, please.” She looked drained.

green train.png

The train was full. The only cabin left was mine. Border guards never checked the crew’s quarters. She grabbed my sleeve when I said good night. “I couldn’t stand it anymore,” she said. “So I hit him on the head with the last full bottle left. It didn’t break. Then I dragged him into the closet and left him there. He wasn’t breathing.”

Feigning insomnia, I leant out the window as the night wore on and the train raced across the old continent. Thoughts of a beautiful woman in trouble kept me awake. It didn’t seem right for her to go to prison. There had to be a way to help.

Outside Jena, when I went to wake her, she was gone.

Vita e morte sul T.E.E. (Trans Europ Express)

Treasure of a Lonesome Motel

hk lonesome 1.png

A friend writes from a town in Iowa (United States):

Although I’m not in the hotel business, I greatly enjoy your digital magazine (or whatever they’re called). I own an antiques shop. People bring me objects they’ve found, or inherited, or no longer want. I buy their things and sell ‘em for a profit. That’s only part of the job, though. I flatter myself that I’m able to discern good stuff from true junk. I’ve trained my eye at flea markets all over this great country. At auctions, I occasionally buy blind lots for the possibility of a big score. I’m not immune to thrills.

Did somebody say thrills?

Did somebody say thrills?

When the old Oogadagah Motel closed down, I attended the going-out-of-business sale. Furniture from the Golden Age of Motels goes for big bucks these days, depending on the condition.

That couch would go for about five bucks, I’d say…

That couch would go for about five bucks, I’d say…

The Oogadagah was a shady, end-of-town, no-tell establishment: no bar, no restaurant, no color TVs, no air-conditioning. No frills except for big mirrors, I remember. I sell quite a lot of mirrors, but the old motel’s were all foxed and/or cracked.

On reflection, foxed is good!

On reflection, foxed is good!

A cardboard box shoved under a mildewed buffet table stood out, somehow. The man who’d organized the sale had scrawled “You buy it, you find out what’s in it!”, in Magic Marker on the side. The top was sealed with heavy-duty gaffer tape. No peeks allowed. He only wanted ten bucks for it, so I thought, what the heck?

Peeks aloud, in this case!

All I can say is, I’d rather be me than Lord Carnarvon. I’m happy to share a portion of the Oogadagah trove with Hotel Kranepool’s readers.

So distinguere la roba buona dalle cianfrusaglie.

Mobili d’occasione, stile Motel

Niente tivù a colori né aria condizionata.

The Shining Kranepool

We had a celebrity guest at the Kranepool the other week. A woman came in through the revolving door a shade past midnight, slid a driver’s license across the counter and had a good look around the lobby. “Interesting little place you got here,” she said.

The Night Porter scribbled her name in the register. “Not too shabby.”

“You see, I know a lot about hotels. You see, I had a role in Stanley Kubrick’s horror masterpiece, The Shining.”

piano bathroom eyes.jpg

The Night Porter was intrigued. Mr Kubrick had also been a guest at Hotel Kranepool (see 2018: A Hotel Odyssey). “Oh yeah?” he said.

“Yeah. I was the bear in the party scene.”

A chill ran down the back of the Night Porter’s charcoal gray uniform. Everyone remembers that macabre moment of screen history. “Oh. I always thought there was a man in the bear costume.”

“That’s what everyone assumes,” the woman said. “And they assume wrong.”

moon eyes shining.png

The Night Porter thought she was about to wax dull with a Making Of story. Instead, she said, “Stan wanted someone with a gentle touch in the bear-suit.” Her green eyes widened. “That scene was so hot. Stan brought in fans. The kind that move air, I mean. I was nude under the fur, sweating like a pig.”

Kubrick’s directorial style was simple: he demanded perfection.

“Whoa,” the Night Porter said. “How many takes did you have to do?”

“Oh gawd,” the woman moaned. “Oodles. Finally I asked him what my motivation was supposed to be. ‘What you want,’ he said, ‘is to root out the truffle in your co-star’s crotch, and then scare the living crap out of all those people who like to sit in big dark rooms.’”

toast bear party.jpg

The Night Porter noticed that the show biz guest’s only luggage was a bulging purse. “Got a bear costume in there?”

“As a matter of fact,” she said. “Memories, y’know.”

There were many vacancies at the Kranepool that evening. The Night Porter reached behind him and selected a key at random from the rack.

Maybe it was destiny.

Kranepool Shining

“E io di alberghi me ne intendo.

Stan fece portare ventilatori industriali. Ero nuda sotto la finta pelliccia. Sudavo come un maiale.”

bear hotel.jpg

Magic Fingers™ in the Night

A guest writes from an unnamed hotel in an undisclosed location:

Dear Hotel Kranepool Management,

I thought the readers’ letters published in your blog were apocryphal until this incident occurred in my real life.

Who says real life isn’t magic?

Who says real life isn’t magic?

My job requires that I travel often. Since hotels are my only home, I try to make each room my own. Appearance is important in my line of work, so the first thing I do after check-in is hang up my clothes. I have outfits for day (business), and evening (nobody’s business). In a recent closet drawer where I was about to arrange my lingerie, I found this note:

A cryptic message from a perfect stranger

A cryptic message from a perfect stranger

Dear Whoever Occupies This Room After Me,

I’m not psychic, but the ether says you are a lonely, restless person.

Something of us remains in the places where we have been. Often it’s nothing more than a whiff of cologne, a personal item forgotten in a bathroom, in a closet or under a bed, a stray hair in a sink or on the rim of a toilet bowl. Other times, it’s a partial spirit that observes. You see another figure in the mirror when you examine the clothes you’ve put together, or when you brush your teeth. You look around quickly, see nothing. You’re alone. But the feeling won’t go away. I’ll be there tonight when you start to fall asleep. You won’t see me, but you will feel me.

Feelings. Nothing more than feelings.

Feelings. Nothing more than feelings.

The note was unsigned. No way to tell if it’d been written by a man or a woman.

In the not-too-distant past, a certain category of hotels featured coin-operated bed massage machinery. I don’t have to stay at such places any more.

But that night, when I turned out the light, a smell filled the room that brought back the bad old days of Magic Fingers™ Hotels.

Cheap technology isn’t always a friend

Cheap technology isn’t always a friend

The bed trembled and shook. Someone or something was under the covers with me. This presence rose, and took the blanket with it. The ghost danced until I turned the light on.

And left it on.

Turned on, and left on

Turned on, and left on

Hotel Goddess

A friend writes from a town on France’s northern coast:

Nadège and I used to work hotels. People visit rivieras to be rich together, or to at least feel rich for a few days. The real business of hotels on beaches is to generate and radiate a glamorous atmosphere.

Nadège had talent. She never had to learn or practice anything. Clothes and makeup were incidental to what she did. When she shone her attention on a man, or a woman, or a couple, everything else in the world was thrown into shadow. That’s where I moved in.

bear&hood stef.jpg

Shadows dance, slither and vanish according to which direction light comes from. The first lesson the shadows teach is how to stay out of the glare. Take only what won’t be noticed, at least not until it’s too late. By the time the marks realized something important was gone, Nadège and I had disappeared.

gray sidewalk ass stef.jpg

Regular hotel employees aren’t dull or unobservant. Everything depends on what they’ll tolerate from their shady colleagues. Managers and house detectives who knew their trade dealt with me alone, and discreetly at that. The ones who tried to catch Nadège in the act lost more than they ever knew.

dummy undies stephane.jpg

Things go wrong when you want too much, or if you allow your life to become complicated. Nadège and I only made that mistake once, but it marked us.

The last lesson the shadows teach is when to stop.

roof flounce stef.jpg

We live in a hotel now, a modest establishment at a beach resort no longer fashionable. Neither of us likes to cook or clean or make the bed. Management stores our things in the basement when we decide to travel, which isn’t often, and they’ve agreed to dispose of whatever’s left when both of us are gone.

Dea d’albergo

napoleon boot stef.jpg

In quel momento intervenivo.

cine stef.jpg

gray sidewalk ass stef.jpg

stef disco bed.png

A friend writes from an hotel in an undisclosed location:

Hotels are lonesome places, if you want them to be. Even when all the rooms are full of other guests.

Anonymity is synonymous with fascination. A stranger in a hallway shows you the unsuspected. You enter a room because the door was open and the unthinkable happens. The receptionist slides a handwritten note across the counter and life changes.

A volte bastano pochi minuti.

madame o.jpg

Hello, I’m Madame Ozmya. You might remember me from such Hotel Kranepool episodes as “Lessons of Love from Darkness”, and “Séance Vibes”. I guess I’ve been at the Kranepool over a year now, but time and matter behave strangely here. When I approached Management about the possibility of opening a legit palmistry parlor in the lobby, they gave me a choice spot free of charge.

hk ss madame 0 face.jpg

My clients ask a lot of questions, to which there are no logical answers.

Some of the people who work here on salary claim they hear things, see things. Occasionally they consult me about these manifestations. I might be Management’s way of providing mental health benefits to contractual employees, who knows?

hk ss Madame 03.jpg

I’m not the sees-all, knows-all kind of clairvoyant. But don’t tell anyone, please.

The Night Porter’s the one who complains most often of visual and auditory hallucinations. Nothing unusual about that, since unexplainable phenomena tend to occur after sundown. He was on his way out one morning when I came down to the lobby to suckle at the stainless steel teat placed there for early bird guests. It’s part of his job to make the coffee.

hk ss Madame 0 4.jpg

“Last night flashes of light and mechanical whir-music issued from under the door of the Executive Suite,” he whispered. “They induced intriguing visions. Employees severely aren’t allowed in there, Madame O, but you’re not technically one of us.”

This is still a bit of a sore point. “So?”

hk madame 05.jpg

“So maybe you could go in there and investigate while I’m getting changed back into civilian clothes in the employee locker room . The door’s unlocked. I, uh, checked. Better hurry, though. The suits’ll be in shortly.”

What I found were color Xeroxes of hotel fantasy, still warm, in the copier..

Upstairs in my room, I lowered the blinds and conducted a private séance with the pictures.

This is what the man who drew them had to say about hotel life and hotel after-life:

madame o2.jpg

A volte mi consultano.

Ho, ehm, controllato.

Tough Luck (for Guests in Search of a Good Night’s Sleep)

A hotel is a rhythm instrument, built to keep time. Bells ring, bellboys appear. Elevators bong, guests entrust their lives to cables that zoom and zing like a double bass’ strings. High heels tap staccato tattoos on marble in the lobby, parquet in the ballroom. Guests’ steps are muffled by wall-to-wall carpet in the hallways, a half-hidden backbeat to activity in the rooms.

Check-out time waits for no guest or chambermaid.

dt junk1.jpg

The Night Porter was attuned to the Kranepool’s various beats, haunted by its underlying vibraphone arpeggios.

He wasn’t used to syncopated rimshot thunderstorms. Neither were the guests, several of whom called to complain.

A restless guest

A restless guest

“The bed’s shakin’. The whole room’s thumpin’. How’re we supposed to get any o’ that rest we paid for?”

The fracas seemed to arise from the basement. The Night Porter took the Security flashlight from the drawer and headed down.

The Management had recently invested in a gleaming new array of heavy-duty laundry equipment (See Hole-y Sheets!). These eco-friendly cleanliness giants supposedly used less water, detergent and energy, but they made an unholy racket. Their slam bang anvil chorus had roused the restless spirit of jazz great Dave Tough.

The Night Porter fell to his knees. Greenish linoleum absorbed the blow.

“Mr Tough, what’re you doing here?”

A wisp of smoke rose from the cigarette wedged in the percussive genius’ lips, and got in his eyes. “Can’t give up in the battle against the machines,” he whispered. “Won’t surrender.”

“But sir, the guests. They say they can’t sleep.”

“They’ll find eternal rest soon enough,” the drummer said.

Lost & FOUND! Guests’ Leavings

Ooops! What’ve I dropped under this couch?

Ooops! What’ve I dropped under this couch?

A colleague writes from Kansas City, KS:

People leave stuff in hotels all the time. It’s impossible to tell whether they neglected to check their rooms before check-out, or if they ditched private and personal items on purpose. The guests who’ve forgotten something important and/or indispensable call or write to have their property returned, and we’re happy to do so. Those who left these pictures (which I’ve amassed at work over the years and which I’m pleased to share with my favorite hospitality blog) might enjoy a secret thrill at the thought of who’ll find them. A chambermaid? A room service waitperson? The technician sent in to repair the closed-circuit television set? The guests who occupy their room next?

‘What will whoever sees these intimate, anonymous glimpses into our private lives think?’

The captions are figments of my imagination.

Oggetti smarriti

John Holmes: You know, they sent me to Italy, towards the end. I made two spaghetti porn movies there, one of them with your friend Cicciolina.

Moana Pozzi: She wasn’t really my friend. I never went to America, but that’s only because I never wanted to go. I was always happy enough to stay where I was. What made me restless was another matter, which I never resolved.

John Holmes: Rest, as we both know only too well, is an illusion. Fame is another. What we leave behind is love for nature, and that expands throughout the universe when we leave the world.

Moana Pozzi: I’m immortal, if only because the Walt Disney boys n’ girls put me in one of their cartoons. I never found out which one, though.

Elma: Abandoned Hotel of a Lost Civilization

images-1.jpeg

A new colleague writes from Aleppo:

There is silence. The dead are gone, buried or otherwise dispersed. Survivors live on what the departed left behind. Little of this ancient city still stands. The few erect structures are heavily perforated. A bloody light shows through holes in their walls at sunset.

elma7.jpg

When I happened upon the largely undamaged Hotel Elma, it seemed the Eighth Wonder of a Lost World. Mindful of booby traps, I tried the door.

Whoever fled last forgot to lock up. There was no light. The keys to the rooms were gone, but the locks had been evaporated by some modern weapon.

The Elma was an open hotel.

elma8 girls.jpg

Since my former livelihood had been erased by world events, I piled rubble behind the dusty reception desk, sat and waited.

elma6 reception.jpg

Not too many days and nights went by before guests appeared. Ragged figures with few possessions in tow, they entered as though they expected to be beaten, kicked and ordered away.

“Please, do come in. Whatever room you find will be yours. No fires, please. And if you have food, kindly share with the other honored guests.”

Incredulous, they wandered the lodging’s spaces.

elmepla girls.jpg

NO WEAPONS ALLOWED ON PREMISES. The sign, scavenged from the neutral zone outside an unnamed firebase, has so many bullet holes it looks more like a cheese-grater , but its meaning is clear.

There have been no violent episodes, yet.

Guest Artist in Residence: Charles Luce

The Kranepool Cairn (or, Case #46792A)/Il tumulo Kranepool, ovvero caso #46792A

The couple arrived Thursday evening around 7. Karl the night porter distinctly remembered the time, since he’d just taken over the reception desk from Clement. As he swept away the empty pistachio shells that Clement habitually left behind during the dayshift, Karl’s gaze was drawn to the dazzlingly austere head-to-toe white outfits of a couple who approached the counter. Their hats, shirts, backpacks, pants, shoes and socks glared brighter in the lobby’s fluorescent light-scheme. The Management has never quite established a formula for a cheerier lobby. The spotless spectres awakened Elchapo the resident dachshund, who bolted from his lair under the bulbous distressed-leather sofa that dominates that area of Hotel Kranepool’s ground floor. Vigorous despite his age, he galloped towards the new guests and barked soundlessly. The dog’s voice box was permanently damaged in an incident involving a lit cigar.

White white white!/Bianco bianco bianco!

White white white!/Bianco bianco bianco!

They registered as Mr. and Mrs. Y. Yamamoto, from Tokushima Prefecture. Along with their matching backpacks, they’d wheeled in two large footlockers covered in labels that, upon closer scrutiny, appeared to be pictures of piles of stones in various far-flung locations. Mr. Yamamoto, who spoke perfect German, stated their intention to remain at Hotel Kranepool for a single night. This was nothing unusual. Many travelers choose the Kranepool for its proximity to the train station. Mr. Yamamoto’s broken fingernails and the calluses on his palms caught Karl’s eye when he handed over the key to room 504.

***

The business at the registration desk completed, Karl the night porter rang the bell. Ali the baggage porter made hurried calculations about how to get the outsize footlockers into the elevator. The couple waved him off, and insisted on wheeling their eccentric baggage into the elevator themselves. They had to take the lockers up separately. Ali heard the elevator’s motor strain. That was also nothing unusual. The Kranepool’s staff were used to travelers with exaggerated luggage filled with souvenirs, canned meats from the homeland, and frivolous must-haves discovered in exotic medinas.

Stupa-fying!/Stupa-facente!

Stupa-fying!/Stupa-facente!

***

By 7:32 pm, the lobby resumed its silence. Elchapo curled up under the couch. Ali reread the previous week’s Der Spiegel, and Karl finished his round of pistachio shell elimination.

All was quiet until 2 in the morning. Mme. Claremont, the widow in room 404, one of the Kranepool’s permanent guests, called the desk to complain of noises from the room above hers. In her palsied voice she said she’d been awakened by scraping and percussive gonging sounds that emanated from the ceiling. Karl rushed to Madam Claremont’s room, but there was nothing left to hear. He went upstairs, put his ear against the door of room 504. He thought he heard rushing water. The tub? The shower? Certainly nothing disturbing enough to warrant a knock on the door. By 2:30, all was normal again.

***

At 11:30 the following morning, Kareena the housekeeper knocked at room 504. There was no response. She let herself in with her passkey. At 11:35 she burst into the lobby, waved her arms and screamed. “Alsukhur, alsukhur 504!!” Ali turned to Karl and translated, “Rocks, rocks in 504!” Karl realized that the Yamamotos hadn’t checked out at the appointed time of 11 am. He raced to the elevator, Ali in tow. At the open door of 504, they too were stunned.

***

House Detective Müller was familiar with peculiar goings-on at Hotel Kranepool, but this case was particularly unsettling. In the space between the bed and the window in room 504 was a massive pile of stones that nearly touched the ceiling fan’s blades. Det. Müller put on his rubber gloves. The footlockers contained carefully folded piles of the couple’s white clothing, backpacks and shoes. He conducted a thorough search of the room. The Yamamotos were nowhere to be found. The door had been locked from the inside. One detail in particular vexed Müller: the bottom of each footlocker was filled with soggy clothing and a few centimeters of crystalline water.

In the gravel mine/Nella cava di ghiaia

In the gravel mine/Nella cava di ghiaia

Det.

***

After a phone calle to Inspector Hata in Tokushima, Det. Müller closed the case for lack of leads. A week after the investigation, the pile of stones was disassembled. Mme. Claremont went to visit her sister in Brussels while the work was being done. The stones were used to reinforce the nearby riverbank, which had been partially washed out the previous spring.

Dopo una telefonata all'ispettore Hata a Tokushima, Det.

A Pornosopher and a Poet on Hotels

In the dark silent hours between a recent December 21st and 22nd, the Night Porter took a novel by Henry Miller and a volume of poems by Philip Larkin from the Kranepool’s shelf of books left inadvertently or on purpose by guests. Human beings want life to have meaning. They look for signs that imply significance wherever they can. Night porters are only human.

larkin red.jpg

Holidays were reserved for hotels. My friend and I would go to the most unfashionable, even the most unthinkable places. To drink together, mostly, but we’d also go for long walks in the fields and along the beaches. In the dreary towns, we mused on what was on offer in the shops before we visited the churches and graveyards. In the evening, in our room, life was sexy underwear, and a bath afterwards.

hotel bunker larkin.jpg

Friday Night At The Royal Station Hotel

Light spreads darkly downwards from the high

Clusters of lights over empty chairs

That face each other, coloured differently.

Through open doors, the dining-room declares

A larger loneliness of knives and glass

And silence laid like carpet. A porter reads

An unsold evening paper. Hours pass,

And all the salesmen have gone back to Leeds,

Leaving full ashtrays in the Conference Room.

In shoeless corridors, the lights burn. How

Isolated, like a fort, it is -

The headed paper, made for writing home

(If home existed) letters of exile: Now

Night comes on. Waves fold behind villages.

—Philip Larkin

Hotels were a contradiction: places to stay when you had no money. If your clothes weren’t too dirty and you had a decent suitcase, the receptionist wouldn’t insist on payment in advance. You could stay a week, breakfast included, before you got the hard tap on the shoulder that precedes the heave-ho. And any cooze you brought upstairs thought you must be somebody, since you lived in a hotel.

ossuary miller.jpg

The stabbing horror of life is not contained in calamities and disasters, because these things wake one up and one gets very familiar and intimate with them and finally they become tame again. No, it is more like being in a hotel room in Hoboken let us say, and just enough money in one’s pocket for another meal.

Isolata,

Slick Hotel Design

Management was enthused when N*st Magazine wrote to announce their intention to devote a whole issue to Hotel Kranepool. They’d be sending a photographer and a writer whose names induced mass vertigo in the Executive Office Suite.

“Don’t change a thing,” the magazine’s editor said, in conclusion.

A photocopy of The Letter was posted in the employee area. “We want everything at the Kranepool to be exactly as it was and has always been. This means YOU.”

“This doesn’t, however, mean no dusting and/or vacuuming,” Management added. “Employees must wipe fingerprints from all surfaces they come into human contact with. The plants, furthermore, must continue to be watered and spoken to in a loving manner. Their leaves must still be gently wiped with damp cloths.”

The following are excerpts from the N*st Spread:

Grand Hotel Design

Diciamo a TE.”

The Lobbyist (2)

One of the day clerks was still behind the reception counter when the Night Porter came on duty. That’s highly unusual: diurnals tend to avoid nocturnals. He’d already clocked out, but wasn’t anxious to begin another lonely night at home. The weather hasn’t been exactly clement lately. He said there was a woman who hung out in the lobby.

Curtains exist to hang, as do veils

Curtains exist to hang, as do veils

“She just sits there,” he said, and shuddered. “At first I thought she was waiting for someone. Then I thought she’d only come in to warm up, or to watch the last yellow leaves fall.”

The Kranepool is surrounded on three sides by a stand of ginkgoes.

The Day Clerk opened the cupboard where Management leaves a bottle of rum to help porters and receptionists get past difficult moments in hotel life.

“No thanks,” the Night Porter said, when he passed it along.

Lobbies are public spaces. Not everyone knows this.

Lobbies are public spaces. Not everyone knows this.

“People come in all the time, I know,” he said, in a slightly steadier voice. “They wait for trains, read magazines, watch the tide of humanity come and go, but they usually only stay an hour or so.” He took another slug, put the bottle away. “Does anyone just sit in the lobby all night, staring off into space?”

“Not that I’ve noticed,” the Night Porter said.

Not responsible for left luggage

Not responsible for left luggage

There are certain things one should never say out loud. It’s not going to rain. There won’t be a war. I just know this is the winning lottery ticket.

The Night Porter returned from a round just after one in the morning, and returned the Be Right Back sign to its drawer. He noticed a woman seated in one of the leather club chairs in the corner opposite the TV set, which hasn’t been turned on in a long time. She stared, but not into space.

She wagged a finger. The nail was lacquered so red it flashed in the low light of the lobby. “Come here little man,” she said. “I’ve been waiting for you.”

“Entra gente, lo so,” disse, rinfrancato.

3D Mirrored Elevator to the Limbo Twin Suite

with Matinee Idol-turned-Memoirist Dirk Bogarde and Nobel Prize-Winning Author Heinrich Böll

b&b elevator.jpg

(the 3D elevator’s mirrored doors slide open)

Dirk Bogarde: Oh. God. What level of Hell is this? I’ll take the next elevator. Good evening.

Heinrich Böll: You might as well get in. There won’t be another one for a long time.

Dirk Bogarde: (goes to the farthest corner) Please stop staring at me.

Heinrich Böll: I’m not.

Dirk Bogarde: In the mirror, you are.

b&B elevator4.jpg

Heinrich Böll: You needn’t be testy. My anti-Nazi credentials are nearly irreproachable. You, on the other hand, performed in that obscene film.

Dirk Bogarde: The worst productions can spark transcendental performances. I consider The Night Porter one of my best roles. And I got to grope cute little Charlotte Rampling.

b&b elevator2.jpg

Heinrich Böll: Oh, but I thought...

Dirk Bogarde: Few people are entirely one way or the other. But tell me, do you really feel you deserved that Prize?

Heinrich Böll: Honestly, I do. But I’d trade it for five minutes in a mirrored elevator with Charlotte Rampling.

The Grand Hotel Frookie

A colleague writes from Scotland:

We read An Advertising World Adventure (see HK 73) with great interest. We’re located in a fairly remote part of northern Scotland, and seldom feel included in the globalized scheme of things.

Och! Welcome!

Och! Welcome!

The local tourism industry is hardly frenzied. The Grand Hotel Freuchie—pronounced “Frookie”—gets by with minimal staff. Since I inherited the establishment from an eccentric great-aunt, I’ve been Manager, concierge, cook, chambermaid and Night Porter. I also run the Freuchie Used Books & Records boutique, which is in the same building, on the High Street, along with Highlands Bait n’ Tackle, McHaggis and the luthier’s workshop. Mr MacTavish also fixes bagpipes.

Bleeeee! Swing!

Bleeeee! Swing!

The only celebrity guest we’ve had so far is pro golfer Damo Toyoda, who wanted to test his clubs against highland thistle. He visited the Book Shop and bought a copy of Justine, Joe & the Zen Garbageman, in good condition, for ₤251.99. He used it to catch a 17 kg. salmon in the Quaich, the local river which gushes into Loch Freuchie.

“The big fish went for the fly,” Toyoda said. “He nearly pulled me in. We were locked in primordial struggle. Quality fiction finally subdued the scaly monster.”

Shortly before disappearing in the Grand Hotel Freuchie’s smoker, the fish said, “It’s too bad, really. I saw the cover, and was hopelessly hooked. Then, ‘ere I could read a word, endless night fell.”

A(nother) Quiet Night at the Kranepool

Without electricity they’re silent.

Without electricity they’re silent.

Late autumn is yellow, and then brown. Business travel and tourism fall off like leaves. They flutter in the wind, are briefly tossed by waves before they begin their descent of the continental shelf. The hotel rests in peace. The only sound comes from the dishwasher that turns on automatically when the last few customers have left the Kranepool Bar & Grille.

The restaurant’s blue neon sign buzzes out for the night.

He dreams of summer

He dreams of summer

Despite the general lifelessness, rounds must be made. The quiet time is when break-ins occur. Bums find a chink in the hotel’s armor and score a free warm, dry place for the night. Management disapproves. If only the winos would learn to clean up after themselves when they vacate the premises.

A homeless dream of warmth, dryness and freedom

Night is when kids on their way home from the discotheques in town throw rocks through dark windows.

Glass transparently transmits its vulnerability

The flashlight provided by Management is heavy, and hurls a bright beam against the unexpected. A potential bludgeon with which to deal apparitions a blow.

Darkness and life

Light and colored glass

Surprise comes in two forms: pleasant and unpleasant.

The best nights are the ones in which no shadows speak.

No walls drip blood.

No hallway plants metamorphose into resurrected dead.

No strange women materialize with unwanted news from distant stars.

Un(‘altr)a notte tranquilla al Kranepool

Sono mute, ma non inespressive

Sono mute, ma non inespressive

Fine autunno è giallo e poi marrone. L’albergo riposa in pace.

I legumi dormono serenamente

Guest Artist in Residence: Joe Courtney

Hotel Kranepool Management, in order to bring culture to guests and vice-versa, occasionally invites Art World figures to transform the establishment’s public spaces.

This week, they gave the nod to Joe Courtney, the Art Director of the hotel’s Public Relations blog.

Extremely little is known about Joe Courtney. He wore a magenta Louise Brooks wig and mirrored sunglasses for the check-in formalities. The trip from the hotel’s basement to the Reception Desk isn’t a long one, but it spans several metaphysical worlds.

One short flight of steps for a subterranean hermit, interstellar overdrive for an artist.

A Warm Welcome/Una calorosa accoglienza

A Warm Welcome/Una calorosa accoglienza

Why do you rely so heavily on old T&A photographs?

Joe Courtney: For their element of mystery, mostly. Where, who are these old ladies now? I feel bound by some weird physical law to let these girls who were once adolescent fantasy creatures tell their stories. Even if it’s only my interpretation of what they might’ve said, if anyone had asked them about their lives back then. To me, that’s sorta why art exists, right?

The Enigma of Yellow/L’enigma del giallo

The Enigma of Yellow/L’enigma del giallo

Describe your life, in the studio and out.

Joe Courtney: My studio is underground, in every sense of the word. There’s no natural light down there, not even neutrinos can penetrate to those depths. But I’m aware of the world around the Kranepool. I know that humankind flies around the world in gleaming machines, and that the universal language barrier has been dismantled. I love to draw, on paper, with a pencil and a rubber eraser. The rest is just stuff to throw at the world.

Prisoners of Their Time/Prigionieri del loro tempo

Prisoners of Their Time/Prigionieri del loro tempo

Are you comfortable in the Futurist Mae West Suite?

Joe Courtney: Took me a while to get used to the glare and vast uncluttered surfaces. There’s a fantastic view of the swimming pool. (Editor’s note: Hotel Kranepool has no bathing facility, at least not on the premises) Room service this morning was meatloaf, and the bellhops who brought it were dressed in macramé bikinis. (Editor’s note: the Kranepool provides no such service. Meatloaf, however, has always been a popular selection on the Kranepool Bar & Grille’s menu.)

Shadowy Beings Influence Our Choices/Esseri spettrali influiscono sulle nostre decisioni

Shadowy Beings Influence Our Choices/Esseri spettrali influiscono sulle nostre decisioni

How does it feel to know that your installation will be gone in a week?

Joe Courtney: In a way, it’s already gone. But I’m glad, because it means other artists whom I admire and respect will soon enliven the same spaces.

Guest Artist in Residence: Joe Courtney

Grande è un concetto relativo/Big Is a Relative Concept

Grande è un concetto relativo/Big Is a Relative Concept

Perché ti appoggi tanto a vecchie foto di tette e culi?

Joe Courtney: Per il loro mistero. Chi, dove saranno ora tutte queste vecchiette?

La maschera umana/The Mask of Humanity

La maschera umana/The Mask of Humanity

Nemmeno i neutrini possono penetrare fino a quelle profondità.

Calore umano/Human Warmth

Calore umano/Human Warmth

Il passato pesa più del futuro/The Past Is Heavier Than the Future

Il passato pesa più del futuro/The Past Is Heavier Than the Future
