Things That Go Hump in the Night

The old Kranepool’s been a shade too light, airy and superficial of late.

grim architecture.jpg

The Night Porter put the worn leather “Back in a Minute” placard on the front desk, checked that there was paper in the fax machine, and rode the service elevator to a place where there was darkness.

graveyard scene copy.jpg

The gloom presented a choice: hit the switch and bathe the scene in halogen glare? Or use the flashlight provided by Management to shoot beams through the eerie mist.

red dress.jpg

Not all guests stay in their rooms at night. Some prowl. This is their right, as long as they stay out of Employees Only areas. “May I help you sir/madam?” is the appropriate question, if the guest seems alienated. The Night Porter will then show them back to their lodgings, or to the Kranepool Bar & Grille. Upon request, he will accompany them to the elevator that goes all the way up to the panoramic terrace. But not every such wish can be granted. “Sorry, sir/madam, we had to close the swimming (Krane)pool a while back.”

There was an accident. A guest got permanently lost between the Kranepool Bar & Grille and the hotel’s lido.

body dump.jpg

Those god damn vibraphones have been quiet, maybe even a little too quiet. The silence is as creepy as that scene in The Shining in which a party rages through an empty hotel and then a bear appears.

panda detail.png

“You come here often?”

“Not really,” the Night Porter said. “And now I know why.”

“This is a Nightmare Pandas Only area, uh, sir. Do you know the penalty for trespassing?”

“Couldn’t you just sorta let me off with a warning this time?”

“Oh you were warned a long, long time ago.”

The panda was right. The Night Porter fell to his knees

Buh! Yo!

Il vecchio Hotel Kranepool ultimamente sembrava troppo arioso, luminoso e superficiale.

grim arch. 2.jpg

graveyard scene w guenon.jpg

panda closeup.png

“Vieni qui spesso?”

“Mica tanto,” disse il portiere di notte. “E ora so perché.”

“Oh l’occhio l’ho già tenuto chiuso fin troppo a lungo.”

Il panda aveva ragione. Il portiere s’inghinocchiò.

A Bellhop Named Inspire

A colleague writes from New York:

After I did my last jolt at Rikers Island, bellboy was about the best job I could hope for. Mr Tennessee Williams was already a well-established celebrity guest at the Elysée when the Management here decided to give me a chance. He was famous, but not the kind of big shot who requires heavy lifting.

One lady (I use the term loosely) thought any self-respecting bellhop should be able to handle a baby grand on his own, and without a tip. But that, as they say, is another story.

A crowd gathers at the Elysée

A crowd gathers at the Elysée

One night, when I was about to punch out, Mr Williams asked me to fetch him a pitcher of martinis from the Monkey Bar, which is pretty much in the lobby.

hk 35 tw drink.jpeg

Mr Williams had the Sunset Suite, which got that name because he got to work after sunset, kinda like vampires do. I hadn’t seen any of his plays, so I thought he'd written that movie Sunset Boulevard, which I liked a lot. I was wrong, as it turned out. He let me in, and I set the tray on his writing table. The technique to wrangle tips is to linger. I noticed the word bellboy in one of the first sentences on the sheet in his typewriter, so I started to read, and it was pretty strange. He snapped a five dollar bill to get my attention. When I reached for it, kinda like a monkey going for a banana, he noticed the tattoo on my wrist, a brown rose.

hk 35 tw anna magnani.jpeg

‘What were you in for?’ he asked, in a confidential way that led me to believe he might’ve been incarcerated at some point himself. So I told him about the mistakes I’d made.

When I was done, he did a magic trick that turned the fiver into a fifty. Best tip I ever got.

He also gave me a signed copy of a book of stories he wrote. When I asked him to autograph it for me, he wrote: ‘To the young man who came into my room like an idea.’ He told me I smelled nice, which is not something your average bellboy hears every day.

hk 35 tw smoke.jpg

Some people said Mr Williams had lost his magic towards the end, but I’ll never believe it. Other people say that my signed book would go for four or five figures on eBay, but frankly I’d rather rob another bank. Just kidding.

Un facchino ideale

Tennessee Williams!

Tennessee Williams!

The Monkey Bar!

The Monkey Bar!

Invece no. Mi fece entrare.

Sto solo scherzando.

Kranepudlian Nocturnes

Another quiet night. Management reprimands nocturnal employees who watch TV. Guests have complained about the presence of comic books in the lobby. A night porter is left to wonder how best to fill the empty hours. Where does quality reading material come from, aside from the modest shelves of volumes left behind by guests who’ve finished reading them. Paperbacks are of vegetable origin. The plants in the Hotel Kranepool’s lobby man their posts stoically, in silence, for little or no reward. Do they know they have potential literature in them?

The Night Porter wanted to know. “Hey guys," he said. "Tell me a story or two.”

plants day.jpg

They trembled slightly, unsure whether to confide in a human colleague.

“C’mon. I water you, sponge-bathe your leaves, set the Venetian blinds so you’ll get maximum UV after dawn.”

hk 34 bookshelf beauty 2.jpg

“OK boss, here goes: The fern in the chambermaids’ locker room told us the girls read haikus to each other while they shower. That is, one of them reads while the others soap up. Then it's the readers turn to get gang-haiku’ed when she’s under the hot water. Then they all take turns toweling each other off.”

woman book 3 hk 34.png

“Yeah, and that big hemlock who has the unimpeded view of Suite 1690 said a guest unpacked her suitcase and all she had in there was books. She paraded around naked as a jaybird, and each book got a turn on her head.”

hk 34 bookshelf beauty 1.png

“The orchid in the Philip Larkin Suite was the live audience for a comedy team workout. The girls were going through a jokebook they found right down here in the lobby, stealing gags for their first-ever gig down at the Kranepool Bar & Grille. But that orchid’s a fake.”

hk 34 funny book.png

The Philip Larkin Suite was unbooked the next night, so the Night Porter went upstairs to conduct an inspection round. The lobby plants were right: that orchid was silk and plastic, but awfully convincing.

Notturni Kranepooliani

Mann Oh Manga-no

The night porter manned the desk. He was doing his job, basically, while he read through a trove of Japanese comix recovered from the Hotel Kranepool’s Lost & Found. A rather fussily dressed client came downstairs in the elevator, strode to the reception area, and gave the service bell a sharp whack. Ping!

“How the devil do you expect me to rest in peace,” he thundered, “when you are down here wasting time with infantile violent pornography?”

The night porter didn’t know what to say.

The irate guest

The irate guest

A beautiful lady, who’d taken the stairs, came to the rescue. “Never mind the Master,” she said, breathily. “Trifles upset him, at times.”

“Cultural pollution is no trifle,” the fastidious gentleman said, and smacked the desk with the flat of his hand. “Where I come from, hotel employees occupy whatever leisure they might have with improving literature.”

The night porter arched an eyebrow. “Uhm, and where might that be, sir?”

“Impudence!”

The elegant lady guest

The elegant lady guest

The ethereal lady spoke soothingly. “He was disturbed by a dream of unrecoverable youth and beauty. Would you please have someone send up a pot of chamomile tea?”

“The Kranepool Bar & Grille’s closed at this hour, madam, but I’ll take care of it myself. What’s your room number, please?”

“We’re in 251,” she said. “No, wait...237.”

A guest who doesn't like to waste time.

A guest who doesn't like to waste time.

The night porter went upstairs carrying a tray with the teapot and a dish of shortbread cookies, for which he didn’t plan to charge the guests who’d been disturbed by his choice of late-night reading matter.

Good bet she doesn't read gossip mags.

Good bet she doesn't read gossip mags.

No one answered the knock. He set the tray on the corridor’s liver-colored broadloom and sped back down to the lobby. A quick check of the register showed that both the rooms the guest had mentioned were unoccupied. The night porter dashed back up to the second floor. The tray was gone. He figured it was better to leave it that way.

Back down in lobby, he scanned the shelves of books former guests had left behind. There was quite a selection: The Magic Mountain, Death in Venice, Mario and the Magician. He grabbed a shredded copy of Felix Krull, and got back to work. The book wasn’t as funny as he remembered.

Ping!

L'ospite iracondo

L'ospite iracondo

The Splendid Splendid

Someone had stuck a festive-looking envelope in the “Night Porter” cubbyhole. ‘Holiday bonus!’ I thought. Instead: “Congratulations! You’ve been selected for the jury at the Minneapolis/St. Paul Film Festival film festival!”

twin kats hk 30.png

‘Typo,’ I thought. Sometimes I suspect that a grammar school pedant lurks at the back of every Night Porter’s conscience. The verbiage waxed seductive: “Be our guest at the splendid The Splendid.”

‘Rather odd,’ I thought. There was a brochure with pictures of an old hotel, and train tickets, lunch vouchers. So the next thought was: ‘I never get invited anywhere. Let’s go. Let’s go!’

hk 30.jpg

The Splendid loomed like a Streamline Moderne ghost, especially under cover of snow. A tall black man in a long black cape spun the revolving door for me. “Welcome back,” he said. “Welcome back.”

The swirling glass cut off the reply: that I’d never been there before.

bunnies 2 head hk30.png

The girls at the reception desk said, “Too bad it had to be this way, but it’s good to have our faithful old Night Porter here again.”

“What the hell are you talking about?” I tried to sound calm.

Then I saw the two-way mirror behind the counter. Vibraphone glissandoes shrieked: Psycho. Psycho!

“Forever and ever,” the receptionists said. “Forever and ever.”

Splendido splendore

two head horror hk 30.png

twin bunny undies hk 30.png

The Chambermaids’ Tales

Management doesn’t encourage fraternization among employees, but doesn’t exactly forbid it, either.

A hotel boss: "Fraternization is an inevitable evil."

Mixing ranks is interesting. Unexpected stories emerge from under colored lights, with repeated doses of Kranepool-Nog (see HK 25, Silver Anniversary Edition).

Turns out the most dangerous job in the hotel biz is chambermaid.

Guests, an unpredictable species, are turned on by one-night atmosphere. They can turn on the staff.

The gray smock’s supposed to not show dirt. The frilly bow is to keep stray hairs out of Room Service coffee. The job description doesn’t say nothing about sexy underwear. What we got on under the bag is our business. Well, the old guy in 1690 thought it was his business too. I was just adjusting a stocking, but maybe he thought I wanted him to get grabby, like for a tip. He looked pretty funny, trying to pull a twenty from his bathrobe pocket, all tied up to the bidet. He wound up stealing it when he checked out. The bathrobe, I mean. Typical.

Their hospital bills amounted to more than what they left on the coffee table. A lot more. I know this because they sent the medical bills to Management, expecting a refund for damages.

Sometimes cleaning staff ladies report to me in tears. They’re afraid to react to guests’ offensive actions, and worried they’ll be fired if they report abuse. Part of my job, and I must say it’s a part I like, is to make the phone calls. To the Police, if necessary, but most of the time all that’s needed is a tactfully phrased apology, and a tip.

Feels like, you know, justice.

Night and Day

Cole Porter, despite the name and the famous song, probably never worked nights at any hotel.

cole porter hk 28.jpg

There are major differences between successful Tin Pan Alley tunesmiths, Night Porters and Day Clerks.  Clerk implies minor-league Management. Porter means peon. A Day Clerk deals with the public. A Night Porter minds closed doors.

The distinction is also of an anthropological nature.

Day Clerk, male, Type A

Day Clerk, male, Type A

There are several Day Clerks at the Hotel Kranepool. They are of sunny disposition, eager beavers, go-getters.

Day Clerk, male, Type B

One of them is a Lady.

Night Porters are easily distinguishable from their sunshine-y colleagues:

The Night Porter is allowed one night off per week. I’ve never met my shady alter-ego, but certain images have formed in the imagination.

Hotel Kranepool's OTHER Night Porter

Hotel Kranepool's OTHER Night Porter

What does this fellow do, on those nights when he’s not on duty here? Is he the Night Porter at a rival hotel?

carter neon hk 28.jpeg

He left a note in the Night Porter drawer, once:

Dear Night Porter Six Nights a Week, this is to let you know that I do not appreciate the Muzak you have secreted somewhere upon the premises. Night and Day used to be my favorite song. It no longer is. I blame you for this loss. Management has declared the problem inexistent. Should we ever meet, you will explain the ceaseless saccharine vibraphone rendition of the song I once loved.

Signed, the Other Night Porter, One Night a Week (but it’s always a long one).

Let's call it a night, folks...

Night and Day (Giorno e Notte)

Night and Day era la mia canzone preferita.

The Lighter Side of Hotel Life

Some guests have complained about all the darkness, here at the Kranepool.

Slanting late-autumn light does make the lobby appear gloomy.

ghostly hotel lobby w eyes.jpg

Hanukkah and Kwanzaa lie ahead. The spirit of these holidays is to keep life light during these shorter, colder days.

chandelier candy stripe.jpg

Kranepool guests aren’t supposed to entertain naked flames in their rooms. Management turns a blind cyclopean eye on festive rituals that don’t involve loud singing or large quantities of Kranepool-Nog (see HK’s Silver Anniversary episode), but the establishment plainly needed more.

wall lamps arab copy.png

Interior design isn’t in the Night Porter’s job description, but it behooves an employee to go the extra mile to increase the guests’ collective happiness.

The Kranepool’s storage basement is a goldmine of redecoration possibilities, with no rats, skeletons or vibraphones in sight.

colorful stairs.jpg
digital alarm clock 1.png

An elderly couple checked in at 12:64, according to a digital alarm clock recovered from the vault. They seemed tired and Vitamin D-depleted, so the photon-drenched Dave Alexander Suite was in order. “Welcome to the most radiant hotel in the City of Light,” I said, quietly, and slid the key across the counter. “An early Hanukwanzaa gift from the Management. Enjoy your stay.”

The Day Clerk said they checked out at an eccentric hour, hugging each other like teenagers.

Blame it on the light.

Illuminazione alberghiera

green lobby detail 3 with face.png

sexy idol babe copy hk 27.png

Grim Room Service

We don’t get many writers here at the Kranepool. At least no one’s written “author” in the blank rectangle where guests may state their profession or corporate affiliation, if they feel like it.

Vlad Nabokov: Motel Ironman!

Sometimes I riffle through The Big Black book. We’ve hosted pipe-fitters, raddlemen, hairdressers, undertakers.

The Reaper doesn’t check in at the Front Desk. He goes directly upstairs, with no elevator in-between, and doesn’t knock.

Inflation was low, that day.

Inflation was low, that day.

We had a guy check out permanently this week. Must’ve been a painful end, too. Seventh-floor guests complained about moans, screams and body-thumps. In the lobby, all I heard was the courtesy phones ringing off the hook.

“Some noisy creep’s spoiling our mood.”

“How’m I supposed to watch TV?”

“I have several important meetings tomorrow.”

A room with a view, on the 7th Floor.

A room with a view, on the 7th Floor.

So I went up to investigate. The seventh-floor was awfully quiet. Knock-knock? Uh-oh, sounds like no one’s there. This is why pass-keys exist. “Coming in, sir.”

hodie mihi hk 26.png

Let’s say liver failure’s not a pretty way to go. The cops came, then the Coroner, finally the morgue crew. They made their official phone calls. I asked the authorities to be as quiet as possible. Some disturbed guests came around for a look, and to ask questions.

Another room, another view….

Another room, another view….

The dead man had used Hotel Kranepool stationery to start a novel about professional comedy. The cops didn’t say anything when I took a look. Here’s the first sentence:

In Hell, no one can smell your farts. — "Shmecky" Alighieri, the Divine Comedian

Hey! No smoking, in Hell!

Hey! No smoking, in Hell!

“Maybe it’s better this way, sir,” I said, and stuffed the bloody scrawled sheets into the body bag as the Morgue technicians rolled the gurney out of the room, out of the Kranepool, and into the night with no lights, no sirens.

“Qualche carogna ci sta guastando l’atmosfera.”

“Come faccio a guardare la tivù?”

“Domani ho delle riunioni importanti.”

Andai di sopra per indagare. Il settimo piano era silenzioso. Toc-toc? Ohi, sembra che non ci sia nessuno. Per questo esistono grimaldelli digitali. “Permesso? Sto entrando, signore.”

Ecco l’incipit:

Silver Anniversary Special: Kranepool-Nog!

Halloween is past, ditto the Day of the Dead. According to the commercial world, that means it’s Xmas. The good cheer won’t let up for a minute, until the Happy New Year hangover kicks in.

Splosh! Growl!

Splosh! Growl!

Falling colorful leaves, long lonely nights and infinite access to the Ether yield strange communication. As faithful HK guests know, we’ve cast a wide net for a cocktail formula that will symbolize the spirit of our establishment. The following comes from a colleague who busts her nightly hump in LA. Here’s the complete correspondence:

Our Lady in LA

Our Lady in LA

Hey doll-face, our man at The Miranda came through with an evil martini for the Kranepool Bar.

Would Your Loveliness care to contribute a highball recipe for the impending holidays?

The message

The message

Anything made by my mother in my childhood would qualify as an evil martini.

Egg nog was her most creative concoction, and put me off the real thing for years. Raw milk and two or three raw eggs – with shells – were dropped in a blender and combined with honey, vanilla, brewer’s yeast and protein powder, then blended to a slimy, gritty consistency. Best consumed in one long draft, as the egg whites formed unappetizing strings if one paused.

We usually got this when we were sick. I don’t think it was intended to induce vomiting, but often did.

Foglie colorate in libera caduta, lunghe notti solitarie e infinito accesso all’etere comportano strane comunicazioni.

The Night Porter: 43rd Anniversary Reunion!

Charlotte Rampling and Dirk Bogarde won’t get together again, not in this life. But when this life fails, there’s always room for possibility at the Hotel Kranepool.

charlotte 1.jpeg
dirk 1.jpeg

Liliana Cavani’s movie stepped on a lot of psychodramatic toes. Those who didn’t walk out might’ve thought about hotels differently. Who’s really running the joint? What goes on in the rooms when it’s dark outside, and why do you want to know so badly? The role of those who keep watch while guests sleep, or don’t, took on new meaning.

hk 24 3.jpeg

A couple checked in at an uncustomary hour the other night. Since I was sitting at the front desk, they quite reasonably mistook me for a receptionist. I grabbed a key off the rack, slid it across the counter. They seemed embarrassed as they fumbled for documents.

hk 24 5.jpeg

“No need for that,” I said. “Not tonight. The Philip Larkin Suite’s all yours, on the house.”

They stared. She was wearing a nice raincoat. “How come?” the man said, as if he suspected ulterior motives.

“An anniversary gift from the Management.”

She said, “But it’s not...”

He took the key. “Thanks. We appreciate it.”

hk 24 1.jpeg

The elevator bongs quietly, after 2 a.m. The doors slide slower too. The mirror on the back wall of the little cabin showed a picture that made nightlife in a hotel worth living.

Then the vibraphones started in again.

vibraphone.jpeg

Sembravano in imbarazzo mentre cercavano i documenti.

“Come mai?” chiese l’uomo, sospettoso.

“Un regalo di anniversario, dalla Gestione.”

Lei disse, “Ma non è... ”

Lui afferrò la chiave. “Grazie. Lo apprezziamo.”

hk 24 6.jpeg

Raising Spirits: The Search Is On, for the Kranepool-Tini

We’ve been thinking about cocktails here at the Kranepool. Maybe a bit more than we ought to, when the night’s business is at hand.

hk 23 tn.jpeg

We thought the Kranepool Bar & Grille ought to have a namesake cocktail. Might attract customers. Can’t hurt.

hk 23 4.png

We spread the word, through the night-wire.

A colleague, night porter at The Miranda in Los Angeles, writes:

‘The world’s worst martini is made by Mason Verger, the villain in Thomas Harris’s Hannibal – a nurse wipes away a child’s tears and puts “the wet swatches in Mason’s martini glass, chilling in the playroom’s refrigerator beside the orange juice and cokes.”

Personally I’m not a big fan of the dirty martini - I resent the idea of paying good money for olive brine, but if we really need saltiness in there we could always use the sweat of supermodels, added to the martini as it’s mixed, stirred not shaken.’

hk 23 3.jpeg

We don’t get a whole lot of supermodels here at the Kranepool. Or let’s say, not yet. But mixing, stirring and shaking help keep one slim, and also help one cut a good figure at the bar. Word spreads. Word gets around, but deeds not words get cocktails made, and drunk.

Alcolici super: alla ricerca del Kranepool Kocktail

Pensiamo ai cocktail, qui all’Hotel Kranepool.

Poets in the Kitchen (What we think about when we think about soup)

food 10.png

If the soup tastes good at the Kranepool Bar & Grille, there’s a reason for it: love. Management isn’t always cold and unfeeling. They hire cooks who’ll apply more than salt, sugar and grease. A smattering...

“When I whip up a vat of soup, I think about who’s going to slurp it. The spoons at the Kranepool Bar & Grille are hefty and suit the hand. Their feminine shape lifts hot liquid to lips that have blown to cool it. Twist of pepper, grain of salt, squirt of lemon and mashed potatoes instead of starch to add body, then I think of your body next to mine in the bed that was ours and I take up the knife and get busy boning all those dead chickens for tomorrow’s Fry Night.”

A Hotel Full of Shadows

Business falls off in the fall. Unlike leaves, commerce refuses to change color. Management scrimps where it can: warm incandescent glow gives way to low-watt fluorescence. Shadows encroach as far as increased vacancy allows.

Halloween’s the best holiday ever invented: a chance to be someone other than yourself, if only for a few hours of drunken revelry.

(foto a, b, c, d)

20th Anniversary Facelift!

Hotels are heavy-duty houses. Constant use requires never-ending maintenance.

light and jewel display hk 20.jpg

Non-stop renovation implies the replacement of a hotel’s every component every five years. An analogy to the fun biological fact that every cell of your body is replaced every seven years. This means you. Can you truly claim to be the person you were seven years ago?

The Hotel Kranepool claims to be the same hotel it was at its inception. We do so proudly.

stair detail hk20.jpg

The trick is to keep the spirit of place intact, despite perpetual transformation. The goal is to maintain the illusion of unchangeability. This is no easy feat: just ask the Ritz, the Sherry-Netherland, the Hassler Villa Medici, the Negresco.

The Hotel Kranepool has more in common with those luxury fleabags than you might suppose.

The Secret Life of Plants (at the Kranepool)

The hotel at night is a lovely place. I mean it. It’s not just the quiet, and the feeling that all the guests are safely stowed away, or going about their business in the privacy of their rooms.

Headphones enliven the hourly rounds, and cut the ghostly vibraphone echoes in the halls.

The lobby is also host to plant life. The green beings who abide at the Kranepool grok thoughts provoked by obsessive oeuvres upon which this night porter is currently fixated: Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life, and The Secret Life of Plants, by Christopher Bird and Peter Tompkins.

Harry the hydrangea is often shy.

Harry the hydrangea is often shy.

Try this experiment: slap on headphones. Get next to your fern and listen to the album while you read the book. Or head to the nearest Park, if you don’t keep plants at home. Sit under a tree, preferably a palm. Feel what the vegetable kingdom’s feeling.

A little moisture and a kind word or two will bring out a plant's better nature.

A colleague in Los Angeles recently wrote that plants are slaves from another world, kept on Earth against their will.

Unwilling guests? Heaven forbid...

Unwilling guests? Heaven forbid...

Though it’s not specified in the Night Porter’s job description, the lobby’s green guests now get a sponge-bath and a sincere talking-to every night.

Everyone feels better, afterwards. The polygraph says so.

Mr & Miss Kranepool!

Autumn rolls in. Summer’s human tide recedes, and Night Porters are left with not a whole lot to do. We can hang up the Be Right Back! sign, and head out for a stroll.

The boardwalk that was once a short walk from the Hotel Kranepool was swept away by Hurricane Petunia in 19--, but the memories persist, as ghostly gold from the Vault (aka The Closet of Expired Registers Etc. in the basement).

That wooden corniche was the scene for the once-only Hotel Kranepool Pageant of Pulchritude, 19--.

Contestants came from near and not-too-far to vie for a free weekend’s stay with all the trimmings, including All-You-Can-Eat Stuffed Pigeon Meatloaf!

Here they are, once again:

Kate K., MIss Kranepool, 19--

Kate K., MIss Kranepool, 19--

Kate K., fresh from her Miss A-Bomb victory in Nevada, doubled down at the Kranepool. Her puffy costume did the trick! Ka-boom! Miss Kranepool 19--!

Saraswati V., 1st Runner-up

Saraswati V., 1st Runner-up

Saraswati V., First Runner-Up, was finishing a degree in Dentistry when she signed up for the Pageant. Her winning smile meant: close, but no cigar. She developed a tobacco habit after the tears dried. Got a light off Miss A-Bomb’s costume.

Natasha Y., 2nd Runner-up

Natasha Y., 2nd Runner-up

There were only two contestants for Mister Kranepool. Here they are, once again:

Benito F.: snatched defeat from the jaws of victory

Benito F.: snatched defeat from the jaws of victory

Benito F. stripped off his dishwasher smock and wowed everyone with his pecs, abs and glutes. He smashed a bust of Pallas Athena in the lobby when he was informed he couldn’t trade in the free weekend’s stay and All-You-Can-Eat Stuffed Pigeon Meatloaf for fifty bucks, cash. He took off in a huff, and was never seen again.

So the Mister Kranepool Prize went to his lone opponent:

Stan W., Mister Kranepool, 19--

Stan W., Mister Kranepool, 19--

Stan W. was well-known on the amateur bowling, wrestling and adult entertainment circuits. When he found out about his surprise default victory, he crowed, “NASA, here I come. Next stop: the moon!”

He was quite an eater. Kranepool kitchen staff had to slaughter all the pigeons in a ten-mile radius.

They dropped a bomb on the birds. Ka-boom!

Miss & Mister Kranepool!

Arriva l’autunno.

Found & Lost (Again) at the Kranepool

Some nights, when there’s nothing god on the tiny black-and-white TV hidden in the reception desk’s middle drawer, night porters riffle through the vault of Hotel Kranepool history: registers from every year the establishment’s been in business, and the Lost & Found cabinet of wonders.

Objects left unclaimed for over twelve months become employee perquisites. Chambermaids shop chic for free, and practically weep with joy. Waiters and cooks get gloves and hats to flaunt on their days off. Bellboys prefer umbrellas, and sexual knick-knacks.  Night porters want the memories, and usually they’re all that’s left, after the others have taken their pick.

A “fuzzy, wild-eyed” personage arrived on October 7, 19--, and “with an exaggerated and suspicious flourish, signed the register as “Georgie-Boy creeP”. According to notes scribbled by the reception clerk that afternoon, the guest requested a room facing the airshaft.

On the line where guests may list their professions, this Mr creeP wrote, “Bluesman ExtraOrdinaire”.

When Mr creeP checked out, the chambermaids threatened to resign in a body. “Disgraceful”, “dishuman” and “disgusting” were among the mildest descriptions of the damage. The leavings were catalogued and stored, as evidence in a court case, should the severely untidy mystery guest ever reappear.

Mr creeP’s blues-y “shades” are shown for scale.

Exhibit A: Apparently an erotic novelty item. Blown on the island of Murano, in Italy.

Soffiato a Murano.
