They Robbed the Ritz

Time was, armed robbers enjoyed rock- and/or movie-star status in the farther and poorer reaches of the United States. Bonnie and Clyde were the King and Queen of the bank job scene, but their fame only got them shot to pieces.

Not many people alive today remember a string of hotel heists that briefly catapulted another romantic couple to small-town newspaper notoriety.

Velma Potter and Ern Setsom roamed West Texas, Oklahoma and Nebraska. Their guns never blazed. Their getaway car was a bargain rental jalopy.

The fact that captured reporters’ interest was that they only hit hotels named Ritz.

The Ritz Motel, Fried Egg City, Oklahoma

“Sounded fancy,” Velma told a reporter. “We wanted us some of that.”

Their MO was to spend a night in the best suite available at the Ritz in question, then rob the joint at check-out time.

They looted cash registers, stole towels and cleaned out coin-operated candy- and cigarette dispensers. Magic Fingers™ machines were also easy to crack. “We’d get a massage, and then get the quarter back,” Ern quipped, as Federal Marshals led the crime team away in handcuffs.

Since Velma and Ern never really hurt anyone, the State went easy on them. Ern turned big rocks into little rocks for two years. Velma, who’d briefly attended Secretarial School, took a Warden’s dictation for nine months.

Upon release, Velma and Ern reunited and stayed on the right side of the law. They never saw the inside of a jail or a hotel again. They stayed with relatives when they visited Coney Island on their Silver Anniversary road trip. They were both killed in the Parachute Drop disaster.

Velma Potter e Ern Setsom presero d’assalto West Texas, Oklahoma e Nebraska.

hk ritz 4.png

“Fumavamo e ci rovinavamo i denti a scrocco,” disse Ern, mentre veniva portato via dagli sceriffi.

diurno 7.jpg

Diurnal Nocturnes

A former colleague writes from Italy:

The national railway line eliminated alberghi diurni, places where travelers who faced long waits between connections or between business appointments in strange towns could take a nap, or a shower, or enjoy a massage. I’ve been out of work since then.

diurno 8.jpg

Job offers for someone with my physical difficulties were limited. The requisite skill had to be learned quickly. The population of the Albergo Diurno underneath the main train station got used to my presence, and the days and nights became a fug of muscles and bones under skin. Manual labor prepared the clients for reëntry into the world above and outside, the world bathed by sunlight or its artificial nocturnal twin.

diurno 6.jpg

One of my colleagues had known a different life in her youth. Nature had lavishly endowed her with bones, muscles and skin. She left her family, who wanted to exploit her youthful exuberance. She escaped her town, where her natural form was prone to indecent speculation and molestation. Her body was her job market. She went from Junior Miss Rimini to Miss Italian Bosom. A great film director immortalized her, but she didn’t like the movie world. She put that behind her too, and took over the pedicure salon here in the Albergo Diurno.

hk diurno 10.jpg

Marked by nature, we became friends. She papered the massage room’s walls with her publicity pictures. Male clients saw them and made appointments for a pedicure. The women who came to me after foot therapy often requested a happy ending to their massages. I couldn’t see the pictures or the customers, but hands have their own memories. My colleague worked nude under her smock. She’d take my hands in hers and trace her image indelibly on my heart.

On Removal

The hospitality business is a complicated monster, but many of the artificial organism’s components are simple, and human.

The Kranepool, like any hotel, takes in deliveries, from clean blankets to imported champagne. Less thought is given to what’s taken away, yet removal is an indispensable aspect of hotel life.

A hotel is a commercial enterprise, therefore not entitled to municipal sanitation services. Private contractors remove the Kranepool’s refuse. These companies. like hotels, employ people. They work hard. The time has come for you, The Guests, to meet some of the men and women who help keep the Kranepool sanitary.

—The Management

devil garbage.jpg

How’d I get into this line of work? Wasn’t easy! Well, actually it was, kinda. You could say I was ancestored in. My grandpa was a garbageman. So was my pop. I rebelled, but fate has little tolerance for family business quirks. My old man barged into the chemistry lab where I was previously employed and grabbed my ear. ‘Listen sport, garbage was good enough for my old man and me so it’s good enough for you.’ He was just too cheap to change the neon sign above the family dumptruck garage: Doombey & Son. But I’m happy. In the end, this is the work I was born to do.

paper junk man.jpg

What I love most about garbage is its mystery. What’s in those big gray bags? Most of the time I don’t want to know. Once a bag ripped open and there was a hand in there, a left one. Nobody ever found out who that hand belonged to, because I pulled a fresh bag from the truck and made it disappear again.

door:bologna garbage.jpg

‘All you can eat!’, said the recruiting poster. Kleen Kween Ko. kept all its promises. The benefits are good: my partner and I enjoy free health care and paid vacations. The trouble is, we also get to keep as much junk as I can drag home. And that’s a lot. Our apartment is in danger of explosion.

“When I was a child, I knew I was different from other children. The boys wanted to be soldiers. The girls dreamt of glamorous careers as fashion models or ballerinas. My vision was of a clean environment. I ran for, and was elected, Hygiene Monitor all the way through High School. My career dreams came true too. And then I met Blonda.”

corner monster trash.jpg

Though not a Sanitation worker, I always wanted to get into Hotel Kranepool. There’s a hole in the fence behind the dumpsters. The Charlotte Rampling Suite was unlocked.

Queste aziende danno lavoro a diversa gente. Lavorano sodo.

“Senti moccioso, i rifiuti andavano bene a mio babbo e me, quindi vanno bene anche a te.”

orange hole garbage.jpg

blue gin junk.jpg

I ragazzi volevano diventare soldati.

Tim Carey and Raymond Pettibon at the Limbo Twin Lounge (Kranepool Bar & Grille)!

“Hotel life is an affair of furtive encounters, tearful reconciliations and crossed destinies.” —The Management

This is where it all began.

This is where it all began.

Steak Tartare Night has become a popular Sunday feature at Hotel Kranepool’s food & drink annex. Restaurant personnel are happy to welcome both the living and the dead to their weekly gore-feast. Among recent VIP diners: character actor Tim Carey and artist Raymond Pettibon.

You are a fly on the wall! Or an indiscreet waitress.

pink glove c&p.png

Tim Carey: (burps) Oh man I love the crunch o’ raw meat. I think I musta been a hyena in a previous life. (to the waitress) Hey shweetheart, do ya think ya could bear to bring us a bigger bottle o’ Worcestershire sauce? Aw thanks. (takes a swig)

Raymond Pettibon: Adolf Hitler was a vegetarian. So was Charlie Manson. I asked the surgeons to do my heart operation with me standing on my feet, but they did me supine. I asked for a transplant, but they gave me a quadruple bypass. Too many burgers, I guess.

Tim Carey: Hey if you don’t like burgers, go to Russia. Or wherever it is they send hippie freaks like you these days. Africa, probably. You’d be, let’s see, some kinda kudu, or a brooding lowland gorilla. The hyenas are all around you.

Raymond Pettibon: I’ve always labored under that premise.

c&p 2 bench.jpg

Tim Carey: Hey waitress. Waitress! (snaps his fingers) Now I know this is an unusual request...didja finish Charm School?...great. Go into the kitchen there, that’s right, and ask the cook if he’s got an elephant’s trunk. Gotta be from an AFRICAN elephant, got that? Tell him to stuff it. With shark eggs. You see, me and my friend here are African men, and this steak tartare, good as it is, is pretty pale fodder for us.

Raymond Pettibon: Stanley Kubrick’s movies haunt me. I feel like I’ve lived in all of them, except Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut. The one about the haunted hotel especially. In a way I feel responsible for Hotel Kranepool: this vision between alienation, hospitality and baseball. Being wounded in such a way that you’re unable to see.

The Waitress

The Waitress

Tim Carey: That big ugly fly is snooping on us. God damn hairy insect looks like one of them luna moths, only black. (smashes it with his coffee cup) There. Now we got us some modern art, or luna moth tartare. (to the waitress) What’re you lookin’ at? Never seen a coupla artists talkin’ shit and smashin’ luna moths? Huh? HUH?

(waitress leaves, in a hurry)

God damn snoopy waitress. (slams table with the palm of his hand)

tv2 c&p.jpg

Raymond Pettibon: Vera Nabokov wrote her husband’s stuff. I just know she did. I really thought I’d meet her here tonight. She was as beautiful as anyone gets. (NB: see HK 37, Luna(moth)cy) I’ve got a lot of respect for writers. Even the ones who don’t know anything about baseball.

Tim Carey: Yeah sure sweetie. How ya spell your name? S-L-U-N-T? Cooool.

Limbo Twin Beauty Lounge : Barbara Stanwyck and Leni Riefenstahl!

Hotel life is a story of close encounters, near misses, and uncanny resemblances. The Kranepool’s Limbo Twin Lounge can be just about anywhere on the premises.

In this case, it’s Mister Kevin’s Salon de Beauty, in the lobby. Take it away, Mr K!

frame LR:BS .jpg

Mister Kevin: Though it’s always a delight to welcome celebrity heads, imagine my open-mouthed stupefaction when I saw Barbara Stanwyck AND Leni Riefenstahl in the Big Black Appointment Calendar. By eerie coincidence, or perhaps by my assistant Karen’s incompetence, they were booked on the SAME DAY, at the SAME TIME! A lesser beautician would’ve immediately grabbed the phone. But that would’ve presented a problem: which diva do you re-schedule? And what would be the consequences? Too frightened-making to even think about. So Mr Kevin, if you’ll pardon the Royal Third Person, had no alternative but to style both screen goddesses, together!

BS mau mau.png

(Dialogue reported verbatim)

Barbara Stanwyck: What makes a hotel great?

Leni Riefenstahl: The lighting, Barbara. That’s why I come to the Kranepool. The entire construct is suffused with a spiritual rosy glow. Sidelong glances in the 3D mirrored elevator tell me, “There’s the woman who captured the spirit of the Olympiad.”

Barbara Stanwyck: Not many people know this, but I was hell with the shot put in high school. If Hollywood hadn’t come a-callin’, who knows?

Leni Riefenstahl: The body, Barbara, is a wraparound hotel of flesh for the soul. That’s why we must generously tip the staff, and visit the pool, the beauty parlor, the clairvoyancy salon. Life is the sum of the experiences we have during our stay.

Barbara Stanwyck: Since my colleagues and I were always under contract to the Studios, we never got to stay in hotels much. Sometimes they’d drive us around to the glamourous hospitality spots in ballgowns or bikinis, and we’d be on parade to make it seem like we lived there. This was to attract even more tourists to Hollywood. You know: here’s your chance to sleep in the suite next door to a movie star’s. Or swim in the same pool. Get your hair done next to a screen idol.

Leni Riefenstahl: Well, Barbara, there are movie stars, and then there are movie stars, if you know what I mean.

Barbara Stanwyck: I’m afraid I don’t know what you mean, Leni.

Mister Kevin: (senses conflict) Now ladies, I’m afraid we’ll have to continue this discussion another time, in another Limbo Twin Lounge scenario. Here come the Golden Scissors.

Leni Riefenstahl: I think maybe a shade blonder, Mr K.

Barbara Stanwyck: I think perhaps a smidge shorter, Mr K.

E quali ne sarebbero state le conseguenze? La mera idea incuteva sgomento. Quindi Mister Kevin non aveva scelta. Doveva acconciare entrambe le dee dello schermo, insieme!

featherdress BS.jpg

(Il dialogo è riportato parola per parola)

Barbara Stanwyck: Che cosa rende grandioso un albergo?

Leni Riefenstahl: L’illuminazione, Barbara.

Miss Lunar Landing Module!

Miss Lunar Landing Module!

Another quiet night at the Kranepool. Outside, it was spring. Despite the darkness, the trees were in riot. If the hydrangeas in the lobby wanted to join in the fun, they showed no sign.

Mr Kevin was redecorating his Boutique de Beauty without a sound. Usually he blasts show-tunes full-force. People, like seasons, tastes and underwear, change. That’s what makes life such a florid affair.

Miss Cherry Blossom Festival!

Miss Cherry Blossom Festival!

On a break, or on a whim, he emerged, approached the reception desk and lit a cigarette. The Kranepool’s been a No Smoking establishment since what seem like ages ago, but no Management was around to enforce The Rules. The Night Porter opened a drawer, drew a bottle, took a swig of rum. “Bottoms up.”

“How do you stand it?” Mr Kevin said. “Night after night, with nothing to do and no TV?”

Miss Pork Products!

Miss Pork Products!

“When things get dull, I read a book, or a magazine,” the Night Porter said. “There’s still a few good ones left. Of each.”

“So you still get inspiration from the printed page, do you?”

“Every now and then.”

“Then perhaps you could suggest a theme for tomorrow’s Miss Kranepool Kontest.”

“Huh?”

“Oh, I forgot. It’s a day thing.”

He explained the pageant’s concept, and revealed a secret about women. Fairy tales are true, apparently, for some people. Brain surgeons and ballet dancers agree: it’s better to be beautiful.

Viv & Bev

A colleague writes from Des Moines, Iowa:

Viv and Bev told their husbands they needed to get away for a while to work on their beauty regimens. They said they’d entered each other as contestants in the Miss Uppish County Beauty Pageant.

Neither Bob nor Frank bothered to check whether the event, or the location, existed.

VB.png

Bob, a sales agent for a multinational chemical firm specialized in pesticides and fertilizers, was getting all the action he could handle from his red-headed secretary. Frank, a dealer in reconditioned heavy farm machinery, was an obsessive bird-watcher.

Their wives rode out of town on the Super Chief.

The Imperial Health Resort was a handsome piece of Plains architecture, with swimming pool, tennis courts, golf links and stables. Guests had to sign a form that released Management from responsibility in case of mishap, but the Staff included a licensed paramedic permanently on duty.

VB2.jpg

“Dr.” Archie, a Conscious Objector, had served as a stretcher-bearer in Korea. He liberally dispensed diet pills, and painlessly put wrenched limbs back in place. Next door to his infirmary was the “fainting room”. Doc Archie closed an eye if pairs of Imperial guests needed a discreet place to faint for a while. He collected generous tips, and did even better with the pictures he snapped through the fainting room’s two-way mirror. Collectors in Europe and Japan said Dr. Archie was better than Picasso.

Viv and Bev were his masterpiece.

Viv & Bev

Dottor Archie viveva praticamente all’Imperial Health Resort.

Hotel Goddess: Mary Woronov!

She’s big! BIG!

She’s big! BIG!

Mary Woronov was literally born in a hotel. Namely, The Breakers, that monument to opulent hospitality in Palm Beach. The twin-towered colossus was known as Ream General Hospital during WW2.

Ream.

Mary rocketed to Underground stardom as Hanoi Hannah in Chelsea Girls, shot in New York’s creepy-but-arty Hotel Chelsea. “Of all the girls at Andy Warhol's Factory,” she said, “I was the butch one.”

Pretty little Gerard Malanga looked dainty next to her, even with a bullwhip in his hand.

mary hk warhol.png

She had roles in several Roger Corman movies, including Death Race 2000. She played Felicia in Secrets of a Chambermaid, whose very title reeks of the hospitality industry.

Hotel Kranepool Management ordered staff artist Joe Courtney to create a series of whatever it is he creates to celebrate Mary Woronov’s induction into the Kranepool’s Hotel Hall of Fame.

Dea d’albergo: Mary Woronov

Mary Woronov è letteralmente nata in albergo. The Breakers, quel monumento all’opulenta ospitalità a Palm Beach, nella Florida, divenne Ream General Hospital durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale.

Life and Death on the TEE

A colleague writes from somewhere in Europe:

‘An exciting time to be alive,’ I thought, every time I started work. Another chance to see the world, or at least its great railway stations.

As the night porter on international trains, my job was to collect overnight passengers’ documents for border inspection, ensure their comfort, and see that they got off at their desired destinations.

train 1.png

One night in Marseilles, a woman boarded as the train rolled out of the station. I was about to shut the door. She ran down the platform, held out a hand. I took it. “You shouldn’t do that,” I said. “Terribly dangerous.”

Instead of a ticket, she produced several large-denomination banknotes. “That should cover it,” she said.

“Where are you going?”

She said she hadn’t decided. I asked for her passport.

“You’ll have to finesse that part,” she said. “Keep the change from whatever the trip costs. And now I need to lie down, please.” She looked drained.

green train.png

The train was full. The only cabin left was mine. Border guards never checked the crew’s quarters. She grabbed my sleeve when I said good night. “I couldn’t stand it anymore,” she said. “So I hit him on the head with the last full bottle left. It didn’t break. Then I dragged him into the closet and left him there. He wasn’t breathing.”

Feigning insomnia, I leant out the window as the night wore on and the train raced across the old continent. Thoughts of a beautiful woman in trouble kept me awake. It didn’t seem right for her to go to prison. There had to be a way to help.

Outside Jena, when I went to wake her, she was gone.

Vita e morte sul T.E.E. (Trans Europ Express)

Treasure of a Lonesome Motel

hk lonesome 1.png

A friend writes from a town in Iowa (United States):

Although I’m not in the hotel business, I greatly enjoy your digital magazine (or whatever they’re called). I own an antiques shop. People bring me objects they’ve found, or inherited, or no longer want. I buy their things and sell ‘em for a profit. That’s only part of the job, though. I flatter myself that I’m able to discern good stuff from true junk. I’ve trained my eye at flea markets all over this great country. At auctions, I occasionally buy blind lots for the possibility of a big score. I’m not immune to thrills.

Did somebody say thrills?

Did somebody say thrills?

When the old Oogadagah Motel closed down, I attended the going-out-of-business sale. Furniture from the Golden Age of Motels goes for big bucks these days, depending on the condition.

That couch would go for about five bucks, I’d say…

That couch would go for about five bucks, I’d say…

The Oogadagah was a shady, end-of-town, no-tell establishment: no bar, no restaurant, no color TVs, no air-conditioning. No frills except for big mirrors, I remember. I sell quite a lot of mirrors, but the old motel’s were all foxed and/or cracked.

On reflection, foxed is good!

On reflection, foxed is good!

A cardboard box shoved under a mildewed buffet table stood out, somehow. The man who’d organized the sale had scrawled “You buy it, you find out what’s in it!”, in Magic Marker on the side. The top was sealed with heavy-duty gaffer tape. No peeks allowed. He only wanted ten bucks for it, so I thought, what the heck?

Peeks aloud, in this case!

All I can say is, I’d rather be me than Lord Carnarvon. I’m happy to share a portion of the Oogadagah trove with Hotel Kranepool’s readers.

Il tesoro del Lonesome Motel

hk lonesome corn 2.png

So distinguere la roba buona dalle cianfrusaglie.

Mobili d’occasione, stile Motel

Niente tivù a colori né aria condizionata.

The Shining Kranepool

We had a celebrity guest at the Kranepool the other week. A woman came in through the revolving door a shade past midnight, slid a driver’s license across the counter and had a good look around the lobby. “Interesting little place you got here,” she said.

The Night Porter scribbled her name in the register. “Not too shabby.”

“You see, I know a lot about hotels. You see, I had a role in Stanley Kubrick’s horror masterpiece, The Shining.”

piano bathroom eyes.jpg

The Night Porter was intrigued. Mr Kubrick had also been a guest at Hotel Kranepool (see 2018: A Hotel Odyssey). “Oh yeah?” he said.

“Yeah. I was the bear in the party scene.”

A chill ran down the back of the Night Porter’s charcoal gray uniform. Everyone remembers that macabre moment of screen history. “Oh. I always thought there was a man in the bear costume.”

“That’s what everyone assumes,” the woman said. “And they assume wrong.”

moon eyes shining.png

The Night Porter thought she was about to wax dull with a Making Of story. Instead, she said, “Stan wanted someone with a gentle touch in the bear-suit.” Her green eyes widened. “That scene was so hot. Stan brought in fans. The kind that move air, I mean. I was nude under the fur, sweating like a pig.”

Kubrick’s directorial style was simple: he demanded perfection.

“Whoa,” the Night Porter said. “How many takes did you have to do?”

“Oh gawd,” the woman moaned. “Oodles. Finally I asked him what my motivation was supposed to be. ‘What you want,’ he said, ‘is to root out the truffle in your co-star’s crotch, and then scare the living crap out of all those people who like to sit in big dark rooms.’”

toast bear party.jpg

The Night Porter noticed that the show biz guest’s only luggage was a bulging purse. “Got a bear costume in there?”

“As a matter of fact,” she said. “Memories, y’know.”

There were many vacancies at the Kranepool that evening. The Night Porter reached behind him and selected a key at random from the rack.

Maybe it was destiny.

Kranepool Shining

“E io di alberghi me ne intendo.

Stan fece portare ventilatori industriali. Ero nuda sotto la finta pelliccia. Sudavo come un maiale.”

bear hotel.jpg

Magic Fingers™ in the Night

A guest writes from an unnamed hotel in an undisclosed location:

Dear Hotel Kranepool Management,

I thought the readers’ letters published in your blog were apocryphal until this incident occurred in my real life.

Who says real life isn’t magic?

Who says real life isn’t magic?

My job requires that I travel often. Since hotels are my only home, I try to make each room my own. Appearance is important in my line of work, so the first thing I do after check-in is hang up my clothes. I have outfits for day (business), and evening (nobody’s business). In a recent closet drawer where I was about to arrange my lingerie, I found this note:

A cryptic message from a perfect stranger

A cryptic message from a perfect stranger

Dear Whoever Occupies This Room After Me,

I’m not psychic, but the ether says you are a lonely, restless person.

Something of us remains in the places where we have been. Often it’s nothing more than a whiff of cologne, a personal item forgotten in a bathroom, in a closet or under a bed, a stray hair in a sink or on the rim of a toilet bowl. Other times, it’s a partial spirit that observes. You see another figure in the mirror when you examine the clothes you’ve put together, or when you brush your teeth. You look around quickly, see nothing. You’re alone. But the feeling won’t go away. I’ll be there tonight when you start to fall asleep. You won’t see me, but you will feel me.

Feelings. Nothing more than feelings.

Feelings. Nothing more than feelings.

The note was unsigned. No way to tell if it’d been written by a man or a woman.

In the not-too-distant past, a certain category of hotels featured coin-operated bed massage machinery. I don’t have to stay at such places any more.

But that night, when I turned out the light, a smell filled the room that brought back the bad old days of Magic Fingers™ Hotels.

Cheap technology isn’t always a friend

Cheap technology isn’t always a friend

The bed trembled and shook. Someone or something was under the covers with me. This presence rose, and took the blanket with it. The ghost danced until I turned the light on.

And left it on.

Turned on, and left on

Turned on, and left on

Hotel Goddess

A friend writes from a town on France’s northern coast:

Nadège and I used to work hotels. People visit rivieras to be rich together, or to at least feel rich for a few days. The real business of hotels on beaches is to generate and radiate a glamorous atmosphere.

Nadège had talent. She never had to learn or practice anything. Clothes and makeup were incidental to what she did. When she shone her attention on a man, or a woman, or a couple, everything else in the world was thrown into shadow. That’s where I moved in.

bear&hood stef.jpg

Shadows dance, slither and vanish according to which direction light comes from. The first lesson the shadows teach is how to stay out of the glare. Take only what won’t be noticed, at least not until it’s too late. By the time the marks realized something important was gone, Nadège and I had disappeared.

gray sidewalk ass stef.jpg

Regular hotel employees aren’t dull or unobservant. Everything depends on what they’ll tolerate from their shady colleagues. Managers and house detectives who knew their trade dealt with me alone, and discreetly at that. The ones who tried to catch Nadège in the act lost more than they ever knew.

dummy undies stephane.jpg

Things go wrong when you want too much, or if you allow your life to become complicated. Nadège and I only made that mistake once, but it marked us.

The last lesson the shadows teach is when to stop.

roof flounce stef.jpg

We live in a hotel now, a modest establishment at a beach resort no longer fashionable. Neither of us likes to cook or clean or make the bed. Management stores our things in the basement when we decide to travel, which isn’t often, and they’ve agreed to dispose of whatever’s left when both of us are gone.

Dea d’albergo

napoleon boot stef.jpg

In quel momento intervenivo.

cine stef.jpg

gray sidewalk ass stef.jpg

stef disco bed.png

A friend writes from an hotel in an undisclosed location:

Hotels are lonesome places, if you want them to be. Even when all the rooms are full of other guests.

Anonymity is synonymous with fascination. A stranger in a hallway shows you the unsuspected. You enter a room because the door was open and the unthinkable happens. The receptionist slides a handwritten note across the counter and life changes.

Mirrors only reflect what you look like. A blindfolded stranger responds to what you feel like, and sees how you feel inside when you are who you want to be, even if it’s only for an hour or two. Just a few minutes can be enough. Time stretches out like a nude woman on an unfamiliar, unmade bed.

A volte bastano pochi minuti.

madame o.jpg

Hello, I’m Madame Ozmya. You might remember me from such Hotel Kranepool episodes as “Lessons of Love from Darkness”, and “Séance Vibes”. I guess I’ve been at the Kranepool over a year now, but time and matter behave strangely here. When I approached Management about the possibility of opening a legit palmistry parlor in the lobby, they gave me a choice spot free of charge.

hk ss madame 0 face.jpg

My clients ask a lot of questions, to which there are no logical answers.

Some of the people who work here on salary claim they hear things, see things. Occasionally they consult me about these manifestations. I might be Management’s way of providing mental health benefits to contractual employees, who knows?

hk ss Madame 03.jpg

I’m not the sees-all, knows-all kind of clairvoyant. But don’t tell anyone, please.

The Night Porter’s the one who complains most often of visual and auditory hallucinations. Nothing unusual about that, since unexplainable phenomena tend to occur after sundown. He was on his way out one morning when I came down to the lobby to suckle at the stainless steel teat placed there for early bird guests. It’s part of his job to make the coffee.

hk ss Madame 0 4.jpg

“Last night flashes of light and mechanical whir-music issued from under the door of the Executive Suite,” he whispered. “They induced intriguing visions. Employees severely aren’t allowed in there, Madame O, but you’re not technically one of us.”

This is still a bit of a sore point. “So?”

hk madame 05.jpg

“So maybe you could go in there and investigate while I’m getting changed back into civilian clothes in the employee locker room . The door’s unlocked. I, uh, checked. Better hurry, though. The suits’ll be in shortly.”

What I found were color Xeroxes of hotel fantasy, still warm, in the copier..

Upstairs in my room, I lowered the blinds and conducted a private séance with the pictures.

This is what the man who drew them had to say about hotel life and hotel after-life:

madame o2.jpg

A volte mi consultano.

Ho, ehm, controllato.

Tough Luck (for Guests in Search of a Good Night’s Sleep)

A hotel is a rhythm instrument, built to keep time. Bells ring, bellboys appear. Elevators bong, guests entrust their lives to cables that zoom and zing like a double bass’ strings. High heels tap staccato tattoos on marble in the lobby, parquet in the ballroom. Guests’ steps are muffled by wall-to-wall carpet in the hallways, a half-hidden backbeat to activity in the rooms.

Check-out time waits for no guest or chambermaid.

dt junk1.jpg

The Night Porter was attuned to the Kranepool’s various beats, haunted by its underlying vibraphone arpeggios.

He wasn’t used to syncopated rimshot thunderstorms. Neither were the guests, several of whom called to complain.

A restless guest

A restless guest

“The bed’s shakin’. The whole room’s thumpin’. How’re we supposed to get any o’ that rest we paid for?”

The fracas seemed to arise from the basement. The Night Porter took the Security flashlight from the drawer and headed down.

The Management had recently invested in a gleaming new array of heavy-duty laundry equipment (See Hole-y Sheets!). These eco-friendly cleanliness giants supposedly used less water, detergent and energy, but they made an unholy racket. Their slam bang anvil chorus had roused the restless spirit of jazz great Dave Tough.

The Night Porter fell to his knees. Greenish linoleum absorbed the blow.

“Mr Tough, what’re you doing here?”

A wisp of smoke rose from the cigarette wedged in the percussive genius’ lips, and got in his eyes. “Can’t give up in the battle against the machines,” he whispered. “Won’t surrender.”

“But sir, the guests. They say they can’t sleep.”

“They’ll find eternal rest soon enough,” the drummer said.

Lost & FOUND! Guests’ Leavings

Ooops! What’ve I dropped under this couch?

Ooops! What’ve I dropped under this couch?

A colleague writes from Kansas City, KS:

People leave stuff in hotels all the time. It’s impossible to tell whether they neglected to check their rooms before check-out, or if they ditched private and personal items on purpose. The guests who’ve forgotten something important and/or indispensable call or write to have their property returned, and we’re happy to do so. Those who left these pictures (which I’ve amassed at work over the years and which I’m pleased to share with my favorite hospitality blog) might enjoy a secret thrill at the thought of who’ll find them. A chambermaid? A room service waitperson? The technician sent in to repair the closed-circuit television set? The guests who occupy their room next?

‘What will whoever sees these intimate, anonymous glimpses into our private lives think?’

The captions are figments of my imagination.

Oggetti smarriti

Moana Pozzi and John Holmes in the Limbo Twin Sauna (Electrical closet)

John Holmes: You know, they sent me to Italy, towards the end. I made two spaghetti porn movies there, one of them with your friend Cicciolina.

Moana Pozzi: She wasn’t really my friend. I never went to America, but that’s only because I never wanted to go. I was always happy enough to stay where I was. What made me restless was another matter, which I never resolved.

John Holmes: Rest, as we both know only too well, is an illusion. Fame is another. What we leave behind is love for nature, and that expands throughout the universe when we leave the world.

Moana Pozzi: I’m immortal, if only because the Walt Disney boys n’ girls put me in one of their cartoons. I never found out which one, though.

Elma: Abandoned Hotel of a Lost Civilization

images-1.jpeg

A new colleague writes from Aleppo:

There is silence. The dead are gone, buried or otherwise dispersed. Survivors live on what the departed left behind. Little of this ancient city still stands. The few erect structures are heavily perforated. A bloody light shows through holes in their walls at sunset.

elma7.jpg

When I happened upon the largely undamaged Hotel Elma, it seemed the Eighth Wonder of a Lost World. Mindful of booby traps, I tried the door.

Whoever fled last forgot to lock up. There was no light. The keys to the rooms were gone, but the locks had been evaporated by some modern weapon.

The Elma was an open hotel.

elma8 girls.jpg

Since my former livelihood had been erased by world events, I piled rubble behind the dusty reception desk, sat and waited.

elma6 reception.jpg

Not too many days and nights went by before guests appeared. Ragged figures with few possessions in tow, they entered as though they expected to be beaten, kicked and ordered away.

“Please, do come in. Whatever room you find will be yours. No fires, please. And if you have food, kindly share with the other honored guests.”

Incredulous, they wandered the lodging’s spaces.

elmepla girls.jpg

NO WEAPONS ALLOWED ON PREMISES. The sign, scavenged from the neutral zone outside an unnamed firebase, has so many bullet holes it looks more like a cheese-grater , but its meaning is clear.

There have been no violent episodes, yet.

Guest Artist in Residence: Charles Luce

The Kranepool Cairn (or, Case #46792A)/Il tumulo Kranepool, ovvero caso #46792A

The couple arrived Thursday evening around 7. Karl the night porter distinctly remembered the time, since he’d just taken over the reception desk from Clement. As he swept away the empty pistachio shells that Clement habitually left behind during the dayshift, Karl’s gaze was drawn to the dazzlingly austere head-to-toe white outfits of a couple who approached the counter. Their hats, shirts, backpacks, pants, shoes and socks glared brighter in the lobby’s fluorescent light-scheme. The Management has never quite established a formula for a cheerier lobby. The spotless spectres awakened Elchapo the resident dachshund, who bolted from his lair under the bulbous distressed-leather sofa that dominates that area of Hotel Kranepool’s ground floor. Vigorous despite his age, he galloped towards the new guests and barked soundlessly. The dog’s voice box was permanently damaged in an incident involving a lit cigar.

White white white!/Bianco bianco bianco!

White white white!/Bianco bianco bianco!

They registered as Mr. and Mrs. Y. Yamamoto, from Tokushima Prefecture. Along with their matching backpacks, they’d wheeled in two large footlockers covered in labels that, upon closer scrutiny, appeared to be pictures of piles of stones in various far-flung locations. Mr. Yamamoto, who spoke perfect German, stated their intention to remain at Hotel Kranepool for a single night. This was nothing unusual. Many travelers choose the Kranepool for its proximity to the train station. Mr. Yamamoto’s broken fingernails and the calluses on his palms caught Karl’s eye when he handed over the key to room 504.

***

The business at the registration desk completed, Karl the night porter rang the bell. Ali the baggage porter made hurried calculations about how to get the outsize footlockers into the elevator. The couple waved him off, and insisted on wheeling their eccentric baggage into the elevator themselves. They had to take the lockers up separately. Ali heard the elevator’s motor strain. That was also nothing unusual. The Kranepool’s staff were used to travelers with exaggerated luggage filled with souvenirs, canned meats from the homeland, and frivolous must-haves discovered in exotic medinas.

Stupa-fying!/Stupa-facente!

Stupa-fying!/Stupa-facente!

***

By 7:32 pm, the lobby resumed its silence. Elchapo curled up under the couch. Ali reread the previous week’s Der Spiegel, and Karl finished his round of pistachio shell elimination.

All was quiet until 2 in the morning. Mme. Claremont, the widow in room 404, one of the Kranepool’s permanent guests, called the desk to complain of noises from the room above hers. In her palsied voice she said she’d been awakened by scraping and percussive gonging sounds that emanated from the ceiling. Karl rushed to Madam Claremont’s room, but there was nothing left to hear. He went upstairs, put his ear against the door of room 504. He thought he heard rushing water. The tub? The shower? Certainly nothing disturbing enough to warrant a knock on the door. By 2:30, all was normal again.

***

At 11:30 the following morning, Kareena the housekeeper knocked at room 504. There was no response. She let herself in with her passkey. At 11:35 she burst into the lobby, waved her arms and screamed. “Alsukhur, alsukhur 504!!” Ali turned to Karl and translated, “Rocks, rocks in 504!” Karl realized that the Yamamotos hadn’t checked out at the appointed time of 11 am. He raced to the elevator, Ali in tow. At the open door of 504, they too were stunned.

***

House Detective Müller was familiar with peculiar goings-on at Hotel Kranepool, but this case was particularly unsettling. In the space between the bed and the window in room 504 was a massive pile of stones that nearly touched the ceiling fan’s blades. Det. Müller put on his rubber gloves. The footlockers contained carefully folded piles of the couple’s white clothing, backpacks and shoes. He conducted a thorough search of the room. The Yamamotos were nowhere to be found. The door had been locked from the inside. One detail in particular vexed Müller: the bottom of each footlocker was filled with soggy clothing and a few centimeters of crystalline water.

In the gravel mine/Nella cava di ghiaia

In the gravel mine/Nella cava di ghiaia

Det.

***

After a phone calle to Inspector Hata in Tokushima, Det. Müller closed the case for lack of leads. A week after the investigation, the pile of stones was disassembled. Mme. Claremont went to visit her sister in Brussels while the work was being done. The stones were used to reinforce the nearby riverbank, which had been partially washed out the previous spring.

Rocks stay submerged/La goccia scava la roccia

Dopo una telefonata all'ispettore Hata a Tokushima, Det.
