Marco Fallani

Marco Fallani is an artist who exists in a timeless dimension. He works, intensely focused on his own language, in a conceptual place outside of time. At first glance, his works might seem oriented toward 20th-century modernity, with exclusive attention to linguistic models and material tools belonging to the last century. Yet there is something mysterious about his creations that goes beyond this first impression, an element that radiates unease. Fallani seeks an intensity that is outside the box. He develops an absoluteness of style that lives deep within the texture of his works and makes them, in very particular ways, absolutely contemporary.

Paintings with bowls immersed in darkness, touched by just enough light to make them shine in the darkness. Colorful porcelain cups, dramatized, threatened by black, represent the only point of light, the only recognizable element in dense darkness. It is the play of opposition between darkness and light, declined to a degree of great refinement: the artist is primarily interested in concentrating the energy of the entire painting on a sliver of light, on an object that thus achieves supreme intensity. At other times, he creates large-scale paintings depicting interiors of homes, living rooms, and places reserved for private life. These works are worthy of a psychedelic Matisse, both for the colors used and the way they are painted. They are vibrant spaces that seem about to explode, deconstructed from within, held together only because they are traversed by flaming flows of chromatic energy. In another series of large-format paintings, Marco Fallani paints science fiction forests, in which vegetation proliferates in a sensual and disturbing way, saturating the space with primordial, uncontrollable emotions, expressed with a dense weave of spectacular naturalistic brushstrokes.

Valentina Biasetti

Having followed Valentina Biasetti's painting for many years, we remember young bodies surrounded by multicolored halos that enveloped them like flashing electric rainbows. These were figures evoked in a powerful way, placed within a neutral white space, suggesting a promise of happiness and fulfillment, as if they were waiting for an imminent Age of Aquarius. Even her recent works maintain the flamboyant tension between a super-precise, almost aseptic, documentary-like description and an explosion of energy poured into the air of the work. The result is a spectacle of powerful magnetism, with a great atmosphere offered to the viewer's gaze. Think of the cover of a Boards of Canada album (Music has the right to children) invested with the warmth of more lively vibrations. Not a vision frozen in the distance of a frozen moment, but an episode in the making, open to future transformations. Valentina continues her original research: through the tools of drawing and painting, she addresses the theme of the female figure placed in an abstract and timeless situation. Each presence is fixed within an essential theatricality (but with special attention to the damask fabrics that hide the bodies).

The protagonists of the paintings are often found near a body of water and seem influenced by the unease conveyed by this doubled dimension. They are figures placed within a colorful, enigmatic mist, a sort of pink or orange vapor that makes the whole situation very dreamlike and charged with latent anxieties (note the intertwined hands holding tightly to a vase with mysterious contents).

Valentina Biasetti's visual narratives are the fruit of a powerful mind, capable of processing and reworking in a personal key many different suggestions from the imagery of Pop Art, advertising, and experimental cinema, transforming them into concrete representations. The artist exercises strict control over every detail of the images she produces, yet in this case the technique does not generate cold works. On the contrary, Valentina Biasetti always manages to preserve a fragile quality in her emblematic vestals, a spark of emotion that keeps the emotional temperature of each scene high.

Valentina Biasetti (Parma, 1979) attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, where she graduated with honors in 2005. In 2002, she began exhibiting her work in private galleries and public spaces, and was selected as a finalist in major national and international art competitions and art fairs. Her research develops as a discourse on the progressive loss of identity of the figure and objects represented in relation to the space that surrounds them. Fullness and emptiness are the theme of the imaginary dialogue that takes place in an almost surreal, mute, and silent dimension, a suspended and timeless space that presents itself as a place of Absence. Among his recent and important activities in 2024 are his participation in a solo show at Artefiera Bologna with the Quam Gallery, the solo exhibition “La carne delle nubi” (The Flesh of the Clouds) at the UMA Gallery in Novara, and the solo exhibition “Si sogna prima di contemplare” (One Dreams Before Contemplating) at the QUAM Gallery in Scicli, curated by Albero Mattia Martini. Marta Mancini

Paintings of elaborate simplicity and innocence. Horizons traced with supreme elegance and concentration. Paintings in which subtle decisive elements are staged and everything must be executed in an absolutely appropriate manner because it is through a few gestures that the work is accomplished. Soft horizon lines cross the space of the canvas, creating both a gentle movement and an impalpable still space (but with a great presence). Marta Mancini's works possess an internal magnetism that suggests calm and contemplation. There is a duality between movement and immobility, but it is a contrast developed with great delicacy and parsimony. A principle of sobriety reigns: the use of minimal expressive means to achieve an exciting result.

Looking at Marta's paintings, we ask ourselves: are these paintings silent or noisy? We believe they hold a sublime silence. They are devices that allow us to visualize silence. Standing in front of these abstract landscapes, it seems that not only are your visual faculties heightened, but also, paradoxically, you seem to be able to hear better. And the question returns: what do we hear? A silence that comes in many specific forms: dense, light, vibrant, enveloping. A musical reference for this type of painting could be Brian Eno's ambient music. It does not seem out of place to define Marta Mancini's work as environmental painting, therefore atmospheric, subtle, traversed by tremors and ripples that build a very fine texture. It is a pictorial discipline that is all the more convincing the less overbearing it is on a visual level: the fewer elements at play, the more penetrating its charm. This artist's gesture tends towards a vision purified of undesirable debris. The presence of sovereign details helps us to perceive the delicate and sparkling boundary lines within the overall vision.

Foschini & Iacomelli

Angelo Foschini and Lavinia Iacomelli paint works together that miraculously possess a precise stylistic unity, a personality, an unmistakable trademark. One of the fundamental themes of their work—an inspiration that has remained constant over time—is the act of inhabiting, with the resulting privileged object, the house, declined in multiple forms. As a result, they convey a series of easily recognizable types on canvas: the primitive hut, the mysterious pyramid, the stilt house, the modern rationalist villa, a tower immersed in the forest. These situations are always set up with the minimum elements strictly necessary, without any frills, because these architectures must triumph at the center of the scene like exemplary toys (it is no coincidence that the colors used often resemble those of Lego bricks). Skeletal structures stand out against an impossible yellow background, we see fluid landscapes in which earth, sky, vegetation, and architecture seem to be made of the same rubbery material. This type of pictorial construction exudes an enveloping hallucinatory flow. The works of Foschini/Iacomelli reject realism and end up producing a sort of alternative dimension in which what we see is an ambiguous signal, a representation that alludes to other, more hidden depths.

Tre domande a Foschini/Iacomelli

Three Questions to Foschini/Iacomelli

STANZA 251: Let's start with a theme that you often address in your work: architecture.   You paint huts, isolated cottages, caravans, modernist-looking villas, ancient pyramids, and the ramps of a mysterious water park slide. These are very different types of structures that you subject to sophisticated treatment, creating exemplary objects, isolated constructions that take on the ambiguous consistency of a mirage. Tell us about your interest in historical and contemporary architecture, magically brought back from the realm of dreams to our gaze.

FOSCHINI/IACOMELLI: Architecture has always been a central theme for us. At the beginning of our journey, it was the background subject, the conditioning and at times necessary presence for the characterization of the young characters who inhabited the canvases. In the current transition to enamel paintings, architecture has become the absolute protagonist of spaces suspended between reality and the filter of wonder. The sparkling material of enamel has enveloped these inhabited and habitable places, immersing them in a timelessness that has allowed us to probe their form. Our interest initially arose from mapping the buildings of popular architecture from the last century, places of childhood and memory, places that were loved or hated but indelibly observed and shared, buildings, villas, concrete parks cut by the sun, metaphysically metabolized and digested without response, objects made of dimensions, elements, and scales, in which to imagine entering, exiting, stopping, and living. In the series of huts, we asked ourselves what were the essential elements that could visually define a concept of home, and we pushed ourselves to recreate them by synthesizing the aesthetics of places of experience in a broader sense, such as prefabricated buildings, caravans, or forms similar to giant temples.

STANZA 251: Another subject that seems to be constantly at the center of your inspiration is the natural landscape. However, you elaborate it in an anti-realistic way: clearly, your idea is not to document a forest or the surface of a lake in an exact way. You always stage a visual deviation that makes the scene unreal, creating an unsettling atmosphere because the elements of the landscape end up suggesting uncertainty and an almost supernatural fragility.

FOSCHINI/IACOMELLI: In our research on landscape, we try to insert or highlight a point of rupture, a real or imaginary element that takes the initial scene elsewhere; this is our way of shifting our reflection away from the visible and expanding the conceptual possibilities of the image. The goal is almost always to encourage people to notice what is in front of our eyes through what is not really there, has never been there, should not or could not be in that place. However, it does not have the surrealist finiteness of defining itself in a context with dreamlike mechanisms; rather, it stems from a forcing of the real starting point that we manipulate to the point of undermining the structure of the whole. Often, the landscapes from which we draw inspiration are part of the urban periphery or, conversely, the iconically abused. Remodeling the forms and contexts of the daily flow, of the banal, of the usual, allows us to use a type of aesthetic that is already present, with a sort of anti-consumerist attitude, something that makes us continually reflect on how much visual nourishment we have available where there seems to be none. With a little imaginative effort, it is possible to suggest ‘invisible cities’, based on human needs for survival and conservation, to the point of prompting us to reflect on how much we have to preserve from destruction.

STANZA 251: At the beginning of your career, your representation of the human figure ranged from stark realism to a moderate accentuation of expressionistic forms. You later changed register, treating bodies in a very effective way, with more extreme, almost science fiction-like deformations, or placing these figures in a surreal context, within a kind of totally impossible reality.

FOSCHINI/IACOMELLI: The figure has always represented for us a place of investigation, a visual legacy of formation, and an architecture in itself, to which we can structurally appeal to certify the natural presence of the human being in the never completely closed and defined flow of reality. We initially used the canvas as a chessboard and the figure as an unwitting queen, only apparently free from the dictates of the architectural reality that surrounded her. Subsequently, we represented the characters in our canvases with expressionist formulas, set in the places they came from or had gone to seek, contributing to the structural realization of the context they animated. In recent series, however, we have opted for a figure that has the ability and the need to intervene in the surrounding reality in order to shape it, to become an element of constant participation in the space of the canvas, and to break down some of the constraints of form, suggesting an alternative possibility of experience, even where it did not seem possible.

Monique Dukker

Pools located in open countryside, surrounded by dark and tall trees, with no human presence. Landscapes suspended in an ambiguous time: something has already happened, or something is about to happen, consequently we find ourselves caught inside a mysterious atmosphere. In the visions created by Monique Dukker, the architecture of pools and canals confront nature in an epic way. Vegetation and trees are painted to be dense impenetrable masses, as if they possessed a quality of super compactness capable of absorbing all light. These dark masses are mirrored in waters that instead contain celestial luminosity and hues. These are works of apparent and deceptive simplicity. Small paintings - silent and solemn - capable of stopping time. They evoke a shining solitude.

Enrico Bianda

The living eye of the cultural journalist. Photography as a practice of knowledge and reflection on the time in which we live. Enrico Bianda's gaze isolates the subjects he decides to narrate - architecture in the city, passers-by caught on the street, natural landscapes - with great awareness. These are the photographs of an expert traveller and an indefatigable reader who - for reasons of work and passion - has developed over the years the ability to select the most exciting subjects to propose to his audience. His images serve to map a physical and mental territory, they express the anxieties contained in a fragment of experience, they offer the observer a series of instructions on how to use the world, in the form of precious moments subtracted from the flow of illusions.

Andrew Smaldone

In the multiplicity of subjects that through the years have been deposited within Andrew Smaldone's painting - deer glimpsed in the dense forest, solitary plants with leaves stretched out toward nothingness, ghostly rooms with bare walls - one fundamental element remains unchanged. At the center of the expressive operation we always find the restitution of a still and concluded dream, the visual counterpart of a dreamlike illumination. An empty staircase is silhouetted against the sky, a mysterious light imprisons the architecture within an atmosphere of restless suspension, each place shines placed outside of time. Even in the other side of his work-the non-figurative works in which color dominates the scene as the sole actor-this feeling of hypnotic enchantment remains an element of the utmost importance.

Luca Matti

Luca Matti's is a narrative painting that always tells a story through a theater of exemplary figures. If we find human characters at the center of the scene, they have been subjected to a very special treatment, along a line of physical and mental deformations that starts with Franz Kafka, develops through the obsessions of William Burroughs, and arrives at the disturbing anomalies explored by the cinema of David Cronenberg and David Lynch. When he deals with his other main theme, the architectural landscape, we see hive cities, with massive buildings growing on top of each other. They seem to suck the oxygen from the gray sky and occupy all available space, until they build a hellish vision. The painting style possesses an immediate communicative force, but it reworks in a sophisticated way many suggestions from early 20th century German expressionism. Also thanks to a particular color choice (focused exclusively on shades of gray, black, sepia) Matti's works radiate a sense of nocturnal loneliness, combining the incisiveness of comics and existential depth.

Bärbel Reinhard, in her conception of photographic work, manages to express a dual soul. The first is that of evoker of lunar enchantments, when she processes bewitching and fascinating images. Montages of landscapes, nocturnal and surrealistic excursions, with shining details, materials assembled for an enigmatic occasion, as if following a rituality hidden beneath the surface of intense colors. Her second soul is that of manipulative accuracy, a shining mental exactitude that guides her in her choice of visual horizons, when she shows her absolute mastery of the logic of construction and deconstruction of photographic collages. The warmth of inspiration and the iron determination of an ordering mind merge in her research. A compelling narrative, at once a scientific cataloguing and a recomposition of fantastic impossible worlds.

Tomoko Sugahara

Made by slow and careful layering of color on top of one another, Tomoko Sugahara's works always convey a series of tranquil radiations. In contrast to their elaborate execution process -deep attention, repeated gestures over weeks, long-lasting habits- her works do not suggest a sense of fatigue or effort but rather, surprisingly, emanate feelings of lightness and happy fluidity. They are abstract cutouts of space with immediate visual impact. They look like deserts of iridescent ash, or seabeds. They are smooth surfaces, but not static; on the contrary, they are skies always furrowed by moving energies that also produce ruptures in the unity of the pictorial surface. Here and there little accidents happen, swirls and spots, remnants of subtle magnetic currents.

Stefano Loria

Stefano Loria carries out confident research in the field of abstract painting. Convinced that today it is possible to select contrasting patterns to give a coherent form to his language, he constructs paintings that are the result of different tensions. While the starting point is always the laying down of a quiet monochrome surface, later other elements intervene to enrich the visual field. Minimal geometric lines in relief furrow the space, carving out an empty perimeter; they are figures of measure and rationality. In certain peripheral areas of the canvas, light tonal shades arrive to create a hazy atmosphere; they are figures of a freer instinctive current. Smooth fields are juxtaposed with other areas covered by a dense matter, furrowed by scratches and accidents. It is a painting built on explicit unevenness. Accuracy of design and warmth of improvisational thunderbolt, these are the mental planes that overlap generating the works.

Carlo Zei

A photograph that develops from firm premises of a realistic framework, the desire seems to be to identify and extract from the grand theater of the world a series of selected objects that can rise to emblems. The eloquent inscriptions ("The Certainty") left above the wall of a suburban neighborhood, the mechanical details kept inside a mysterious machine, a stalls of empty seats - corroded by the weather - inside a deserted outdoor arena. Visions rendered in dense black and white, often highly contrasted, with very black shadows that can take on the weight of impenetrable sheets and become the protagonists of the image. It is probably the use of black and white that distances Carlo Zei's photographic work from the realism that seemed to be the main depth of the images. On closer inspection, the atmosphere becomes more suspended, the meaning of the representations more uncertain. The concrete experience (the wall, the courtyard, that old ajar door) opens up to different interpretations. Reflections on the passage of time and our relationship with objects. Generated by a cold analytical passion, these photographs conceal a burning figure.
