The Night Porter: 43rd Anniversary Reunion!

Charlotte Rampling and Dirk Bogarde won’t get together again, not in this life. But when this life fails, there’s always room for possibility at the Hotel Kranepool.

charlotte 1.jpeg
dirk 1.jpeg

Liliana Cavani’s movie stepped on a lot of psychodramatic toes. Those who didn’t walk out might’ve thought about hotels differently. Who’s really running the joint? What goes on in the rooms when it’s dark outside, and why do you want to know so badly? The role of those who keep watch while guests sleep, or don’t, took on new meaning.

hk 24 3.jpeg

A couple checked in at an uncustomary hour the other night. Since I was sitting at the front desk, they quite reasonably mistook me for a receptionist. I grabbed a key off the rack, slid it across the counter. They seemed embarrassed as they fumbled for documents.

hk 24 5.jpeg

“No need for that,” I said. “Not tonight. The Philip Larkin Suite’s all yours, on the house.”

They stared. She was wearing a nice raincoat. “How come?” the man said, as if he suspected ulterior motives.

“An anniversary gift from the Management.”

She said, “But it’s not...”

He took the key. “Thanks. We appreciate it.”

hk 24 1.jpeg

The elevator bongs quietly, after 2 a.m. The doors slide slower too. The mirror on the back wall of the little cabin showed a picture that made nightlife in a hotel worth living.

Then the vibraphones started in again.

Sembravano in imbarazzo mentre cercavano i documenti.

“Come mai?” chiese l’uomo, sospettoso.

“Un regalo di anniversario, dalla Gestione.”

Lei disse, “Ma non è... ”

Lui afferrò la chiave. “Grazie. Lo apprezziamo.”

hk 24 6.jpeg

Raising Spirits: The Search Is On, for the Kranepool-Tini

We’ve been thinking about cocktails here at the Kranepool. Maybe a bit more than we ought to, when the night’s business is at hand.

hk 23 tn.jpeg

We thought the Kranepool Bar & Grille ought to have a namesake cocktail. Might attract customers. Can’t hurt.

hk 23 4.png

We spread the word, through the night-wire.

A colleague, night porter at The Miranda in Los Angeles, writes:

‘The world’s worst martini is made by Mason Verger, the villain in Thomas Harris’s Hannibal – a nurse wipes away a child’s tears and puts “the wet swatches in Mason’s martini glass, chilling in the playroom’s refrigerator beside the orange juice and cokes.”

Personally I’m not a big fan of the dirty martini - I resent the idea of paying good money for olive brine, but if we really need saltiness in there we could always use the sweat of supermodels, added to the martini as it’s mixed, stirred not shaken.’

hk 23 3.jpeg

We don’t get a whole lot of supermodels here at the Kranepool. Or let’s say, not yet. But mixing, stirring and shaking help keep one slim, and also help one cut a good figure at the bar. Word spreads. Word gets around, but deeds not words get cocktails made, and drunk.

Alcolici super: alla ricerca del Kranepool Kocktail

Pensiamo ai cocktail, qui all’Hotel Kranepool.

Poets in the Kitchen (What we think about when we think about soup)

food 10.png

If the soup tastes good at the Kranepool Bar & Grille, there’s a reason for it: love. Management isn’t always cold and unfeeling. They hire cooks who’ll apply more than salt, sugar and grease. A smattering...

“When I whip up a vat of soup, I think about who’s going to slurp it. The spoons at the Kranepool Bar & Grille are hefty and suit the hand. Their feminine shape lifts hot liquid to lips that have blown to cool it. Twist of pepper, grain of salt, squirt of lemon and mashed potatoes instead of starch to add body, then I think of your body next to mine in the bed that was ours and I take up the knife and get busy boning all those dead chickens for tomorrow’s Fry Night.”

“Chicken necks can’t expect much, in a kitchen. The wretched birds whose heads they held up so high had no hopes for life. A handful of corn, they were happy. The guests beyond those doors want so much more. I wring a living from stewed avians. The kitchen beyond the clouds will be so clean and cool.”

“The boss says I’m too slow. The boss says the onion dice is too coarse. The boss says I gotta throw more salt in the soup. The boss says he’s gonna demote me to dishwasher if I don’t get wise fast. You know what, boss? You can kiss my ass. I ain’t cooking here no more. A Slurp of Soup, my first collection of poems was just released to rave reviews. Seventeen copies sold in the first month.”

A Hotel Full of Shadows

Business falls off in the fall. Unlike leaves, commerce refuses to change color. Management scrimps where it can: warm incandescent glow gives way to low-watt fluorescence. Shadows encroach as far as increased vacancy allows.

The Kranepool Ballroom seems especially void. It’s rarely used for its original purpose. We get the occasional convention: doctors, lawyers, businessmen, low-level politicians. There’s some action at holidays.

h, as in, Hotel (Kranepool), Halloween!

h, as in, Hotel (Kranepool), Halloween!

Halloween’s the best holiday ever invented: a chance to be someone other than yourself, if only for a few hours of drunken revelry.

Management, ever-hopeful, has wallpapered the town with Hotel Kranepool Halloween Ball posters. Tickets aren’t cheap, but the prize for Best Costume is a free week’s stay.

Word to the wise: think about what to wear NOW.

(foto a, b, c, d)

(foto g, come gaaah!)

20th Anniversary Facelift!

Hotels are heavy-duty houses. Constant use requires never-ending maintenance.

light and jewel display hk 20.jpg

Non-stop renovation implies the replacement of a hotel’s every component every five years. An analogy to the fun biological fact that every cell of your body is replaced every seven years. This means you. Can you truly claim to be the person you were seven years ago?

The Hotel Kranepool claims to be the same hotel it was at its inception. We do so proudly.

stair detail hk20.jpg

The trick is to keep the spirit of place intact, despite perpetual transformation. The goal is to maintain the illusion of unchangeability. This is no easy feat: just ask the Ritz, the Sherry-Netherland, the Hassler Villa Medici, the Negresco.

The Hotel Kranepool has more in common with those luxury fleabags than you might suppose.

Glitz is good, but sometimes Satan lurks in the details too. Hotel Kranepool is undaunted.

Numero Speciale Ventesimo Anniversario: Lifting!

Divertenti dati alberghieri:

The Secret Life of Plants (at the Kranepool)

The hotel at night is a lovely place. I mean it. It’s not just the quiet, and the feeling that all the guests are safely stowed away, or going about their business in the privacy of their rooms.

Headphones enliven the hourly rounds, and cut the ghostly vibraphone echoes in the halls.

The lobby is also host to plant life. The green beings who abide at the Kranepool grok thoughts provoked by obsessive oeuvres upon which this night porter is currently fixated: Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life, and The Secret Life of Plants, by Christopher Bird and Peter Tompkins.

Harry the hydrangea is often shy.

Harry the hydrangea is often shy.

Try this experiment: slap on headphones. Get next to your fern and listen to the album while you read the book. Or head to the nearest Park, if you don’t keep plants at home. Sit under a tree, preferably a palm. Feel what the vegetable kingdom’s feeling.

A little moisture and a kind word or two will bring out a plant's better nature.

A colleague in Los Angeles recently wrote that plants are slaves from another world, kept on Earth against their will.

Unwilling guests? Heaven forbid...

Unwilling guests? Heaven forbid...

Though it’s not specified in the Night Porter’s job description, the lobby’s green guests now get a sponge-bath and a sincere talking-to every night.

Everyone feels better, afterwards. The polygraph says so.

Mr & Miss Kranepool!

Autumn rolls in. Summer’s human tide recedes, and Night Porters are left with not a whole lot to do. We can hang up the Be Right Back! sign, and head out for a stroll.

The boardwalk that was once a short walk from the Hotel Kranepool was swept away by Hurricane Petunia in 19--, but the memories persist, as ghostly gold from the Vault (aka The Closet of Expired Registers Etc. in the basement).

That wooden corniche was the scene for the once-only Hotel Kranepool Pageant of Pulchritude, 19--.

Contestants came from near and not-too-far to vie for a free weekend’s stay with all the trimmings, including All-You-Can-Eat Stuffed Pigeon Meatloaf!

Here they are, once again:

Kate K., MIss Kranepool, 19--

Kate K., MIss Kranepool, 19--

Kate K., fresh from her Miss A-Bomb victory in Nevada, doubled down at the Kranepool. Her puffy costume did the trick! Ka-boom! Miss Kranepool 19--!

Saraswati V., 1st Runner-up

Saraswati V., 1st Runner-up

Saraswati V., First Runner-Up, was finishing a degree in Dentistry when she signed up for the Pageant. Her winning smile meant: close, but no cigar. She developed a tobacco habit after the tears dried. Got a light off Miss A-Bomb’s costume.

Natasha Y., 2nd Runner-up

Natasha Y., 2nd Runner-up

There were only two contestants for Mister Kranepool. Here they are, once again:

Benito F.: snatched defeat from the jaws of victory

Benito F.: snatched defeat from the jaws of victory

Benito F. stripped off his dishwasher smock and wowed everyone with his pecs, abs and glutes. He smashed a bust of Pallas Athena in the lobby when he was informed he couldn’t trade in the free weekend’s stay and All-You-Can-Eat Stuffed Pigeon Meatloaf for fifty bucks, cash. He took off in a huff, and was never seen again.

So the Mister Kranepool Prize went to his lone opponent:

Stan W., Mister Kranepool, 19--

Stan W., Mister Kranepool, 19--

Stan W. was well-known on the amateur bowling, wrestling and adult entertainment circuits. When he found out about his surprise default victory, he crowed, “NASA, here I come. Next stop: the moon!”

He was quite an eater. Kranepool kitchen staff had to slaughter all the pigeons in a ten-mile radius.

They dropped a bomb on the birds. Ka-boom!

Miss & Mister Kranepool!

Arriva l’autunno.

Found & Lost (Again) at the Kranepool

Some nights, when there’s nothing god on the tiny black-and-white TV hidden in the reception desk’s middle drawer, night porters riffle through the vault of Hotel Kranepool history: registers from every year the establishment’s been in business, and the Lost & Found cabinet of wonders.

Objects left unclaimed for over twelve months become employee perquisites. Chambermaids shop chic for free, and practically weep with joy. Waiters and cooks get gloves and hats to flaunt on their days off. Bellboys prefer umbrellas, and sexual knick-knacks.  Night porters want the memories, and usually they’re all that’s left, after the others have taken their pick.

A “fuzzy, wild-eyed” personage arrived on October 7, 19--, and “with an exaggerated and suspicious flourish, signed the register as “Georgie-Boy creeP”. According to notes scribbled by the reception clerk that afternoon, the guest requested a room facing the airshaft.

On the line where guests may list their professions, this Mr creeP wrote, “Bluesman ExtraOrdinaire”.

When Mr creeP checked out, the chambermaids threatened to resign in a body. “Disgraceful”, “dishuman” and “disgusting” were among the mildest descriptions of the damage. The leavings were catalogued and stored, as evidence in a court case, should the severely untidy mystery guest ever reappear.

Mr creeP’s blues-y “shades” are shown for scale.

Exhibit F: Mr creeP, despite the condition in which he left his suite, was devoted to the Hotel Kranepool. Found inside the above-cited wallet or notebook, this is his design for a logo to appear on the establishment’s stationery. It was not adopted by The Management, so your faithful Night Porter grabbed it.

Soffiato a Murano.

Rendetelo buono a qualcuno.

Meno male!)

Mass Xylophrenia: The Vibraphone Mysteries

At night, I wander the sleeping Hotel Kranepool’s deserted corridors. Different light-fixture styles on each floor are a nice touch. The paintings on the walls are changed monthly. The guests may purchase them, if they so desire.

hk 14 light and luggage cart.jpg
hk 14 nude.png

There shouldn’t be a soundtrack for these professional duty ramblings, yet the air-conditioned melodies persist: soothe jazz. Round, ringing notes in tune with the music of the spheres in spin above the nocturnal Kranepool’s rooves.

Music like the saltpeter prison wardens put in convicts’ food. Keeps the guests calm, unaware that they’re being tranquilized. Management fears rebellion in any form.

hk 14 plant-light.jpg

Ear to the wallpaper: nothing. The spooky sounds emanate from the light-fixtures, somehow.

hk 14 light tridents.jpg

Check the back-log registers in the Records Vault in the basement: Bingo! Mallet-slingers once flocked to the Hotel Kranepool like soothing seagulls.

This wasn’t supposed to be Famous Guests, part 4 (coming soon!), but here goes:

Madame O

Madame O

Cruz Oshida, 1962

Known as the “Queen of the Double-Triple Bounce”, Madame O soothed with even greater delicacy than her male mallet-mates. Her dissonant stylings suggested perfume rivers, silk robes, and torture. She mollified ‘em six nights straight at the Kranepool Lounge, but mysteriously never returned. The memories echo and vibrate still.

Francisco "Cheech" Brujo

Francisco "Cheech" Brujo

Francisco “Cheech” Brujo, 1953

A certified star of the musical tiles, Cheech scored many hit 45s. His rivalry with Frank Sinatra was not of a musical nature. The two never made music together (the Chairman of the Board notoriously despised the vibraphone sound), never even met in the flesh. Suffice it to say that El Brujo had a way with the ladies: mucho mallet-o. Cheech Brujo played the Kranepool at the twilight of his career. He set down his soft hammers before an empty room for the last time, and asked Management if he could run out his engagement as a waiter, or a bellboy. Whether this request was granted is unknown.

Brewster "Bootsie" Coffin

Brewster "Bootsie" Coffin

Brewster “Bootsie” Coffin, 1966

Yankee charm and top-notes of pine wafted into the Kranepool Lounge courtesy of this WASPy tombstone-tapper. She threw show-biz wisdom to the winds, and dragged her vibraphone outside to play her hit composition “Spring Rings True”. She busted a C-sharp tile when she found out that Management deducts Room Service and Dry Cleaning from paid entertainers’ checks. She never came back.

L’illuminazione cambia a ogni piano: bel dettaglio.

I suoni spettrali sgorgano dalle lampade, in qualche modo.

Live! At the Kranepool Bar & Grille! Our VIP Chefs, and Their Greatest Culinary Hits! Part 1! Some Girls...

The Hotel Kranepool Bar & Grille is a, if not the, hot spot in town to enjoy all things foodie—from a quick bite to a gourmet banquet for up to 20. (If you plan to entertain over 20 epicureans, please call 1-800-KRanepool 1690.)

The ladies who toil over our shiny stoves don’t get their names spelled out in lights on theHotel Kranepool rotating billboard that flashes over the highway. But, as a big-name artist once predicted, in the future everyone will be famous for 15 minutes. Whether they like it or not! The future, at the Hotel Kranepool, is always now.

So here they are, along with their favorite recipes:

Bettye N. and her eye-popping Pigeon Loaf Stew

Bettye N. and her eye-popping Pigeon Loaf Stew

Grab a pigeon (the farm kind, not the sidwalk kind), stick it in a pot, put salt on it, and throw it in the oven. It’ll grease itself. Chop some carrots and celery on it, pour in a half can of beer. You know what to do with the other half. Toss in some canned tomatoes, canned beans and maybe a boiled potato, if you’ve got one. Serves 6.

Polly W. and her mouth-watering Sea Monster Soufflé

Polly W. and her mouth-watering Sea Monster Soufflé

Tell your friendly fishmonger to grab you a sea monster. What this means: anything covered with spikes and warts, which is usually the cheapest thing he’s got. Cut out its guts, discard. Stick the creature on a roasting pan and stuff it in the oven. Pour some white wine on it, and pour a shot for yourself as a bracer for when you have to pull it out. Serves 6.

Annette C. and her spine-curdling Lamprey Linguine

These babies win the prize as the ugliest things on earth, but they taste just like Dover sole and cost one billionth of whatever real fish is going for these days. Most fishmongers’ll practically throw them at you, sucking maws first. Flense them, roll them in olive oil and white wine, feed ‘em a bay leaf, and toss them under the broiler till they curl up. Serves 6.

Qui all’Hotel Kranepool, il futuro è sempre ora...

Quindi, eccole!

I pescivendoli te li tirano dietro, a fauci in avanti. 6 porzioni.

Famous Guests, Part 3

The Poet

The Hotel Kranepool Poetry Prize was conceived by Management as a way of attracting a more cultured clientele. It was only awarded once.

When he received the official invitation to participate, Philip Larkin was glad. Those who compose verse are seldom averse to travel. Internationally lauded for his terse stanzas on not having kids and checking out before Official Check-Out time has rung, he was a heavy favorite.

He forfeited the Prize by flouting the Kranepool’s No Pets rule.

“He's only a wicker bunny,” he protested, in vain. “He'll ne'er a carrot nibble: don’t deny poetic laurels o’er a bureaucratic quibble.”

Kranepool Management, to its shame, played strictly by the book. “This ain’t no library with a petting zoo, this is a hotel. Rules is rules.”

Larkin went on to win many other prizes. He never returned to the Kranepool.

Another Poet

Dave Alexander was known as the Quiet Stooge. This shy young man hid his love of poetry behind a bottomless can of beer. He checked into the Kranepool as “Howard Fine”.

Though he failed to win the one-time-only Kranepool Poetry Award (he couldn’t make it down the stairs, or even ring for the Night Porter to come and fetch him), he left this poem on the desk-blotter in Room 335, known to those in the know as the Dave Alexander Room.

Well I dropped outta high school

cuz I thought it’d be cool

to play electric bass

and chant that life’s a waste

I’ll never win no prize

honors I despise

but that famous English creep

won’t win it neither.

Some say Dave Alexander planted the artificial bunny in Philip Larkin’s room as a gag.

Ospiti famosi, parte 3

Famous (and Not-So-Famous) Guests! Part 2!

The 4-Eyed Stamp Collectors Society

After the shameful Bunny Incident of 1967, the Hotel Kranepool resolved never to be guilty of sexism, racism and/or homophobia again.

The following episode occurred at least a decade earlier, in even more repressive times:

A man with a shy phone-manner called to reserve a ground-floor suite. He wanted a discreet place where his club, The League of Myopic Philatelists, could meet regularly to conduct their business.

A deal was made. No complaints meant no one ever asked any questions.

Those unassuming gentlemen never asked the world for anything other than anonymity, and to able to freely pursue philately wherever their passion for it took them.

This turned out to be: the City Morgue.

The Night Porter, on a routine round of inspection, felt what he noted down as “an eerie emptiness”. He listened at the door of Suite 111 for sounds appropriate to a Stamp Club meeting. Instead, he heard “a hideous silence” He knocked. “Everything OK tonight, sirs? Would you like something from the Kranepool Bar? Perhaps a little company?”

No answer.

Alarmed and thoroughly spooked, he returned to the lobby and called the cops. They came. They opened. They saw.

The men’s room was literally wallpapered with stamps from many nations. The Evidence Squad’s Genetic Geiger Counter whooped off the scale.

The men had dressed as their favorite postage-stamp monarchs before they somehow took their own, or each other’s, lives. No shots were reported fired. There was no blood. There were no wounds. These men might’ve died in a mass paroxysm of ecstasy at finally having achieved some dreamed-of transformation.

The mystery remains unsolved. The Night Porter who discovered the macabre finale of The League of Myopic Philatelists resigned his post. He left town and never returned.

Questa passione li condusse all’obitorio.

Famous (and Not-So-Famous) Guests! (Part One)

John and Jane Q. Public love to imagine that the celebrity life is an eternal glamorous party. Real life is different, and the stars are forced to live it, same as anyone.

The Hotel Kranepool has never been a hangout for famous VIPs. Our establishment has served as a refuge for those who dreamed of spotlights, but got red lights instead. Also for people who wanted to avoid the limelight, and found themselves hopelessly trapped, however briefly, in the glare of the Public Eye.

Part 1: Ain’t No Bunnies’ Business!

The vibe for the Summer of Love, 1967, was: Thou Shalt Swing! Thou Shalt Not Be Racially Prejudiced! Study War No More!

Glamour Bunnies Verna Skeeble and Brenda “Pepper” Flanahan heard the call, with the addendum: Thou Shalt Go Forth, and Entertain the Troops!

Verna!

Verna!

Brenda and Verna met during a frenzied Go-Go Dance tour of airbases in South Vietnam. It was a bad trip. They re-grouped Stateside, sorely in need of intimate R&R.

Brenda!

Brenda!

They were a shade too far ahead of their time. To the Kranepool’s ever-lasting shame, the fink receptionist who fielded complaints for interracial mattress music in Suite 1690 called the Morals Squad.

The result: two Klubland Kareers, KIA. Brenda and Verna were stripped of their burlesque licenses.

On a happier note, the ladies are still together, half a century later. Kongratulations! And a free night’s accomodations at your favorite hotel, in which to re-live the Summer of Love. Just tell the Manager it's on the Night Man.

Ospiti: famosi, e non! (parte prima)

Abbasso i pregiudizi razziali! Basta guerra!

Dietro le quinte all’Hôtel Kränepoule

industrial rooftop crop.png

employee locker room crop 1.png

Behind the Scenes at the Hotel Kranepool

People who work in restaurants want family, more than a job. Restaurant families are better than the real deal in many ways: if the combination isn’t right, you can pull off your apron in a dramatic gesture, tell everyone to fuck off, and leave forever.

People who work in hotels are really looking for a place that feels like home. Hotels are better than houses in many ways: you can do what you like in the unrented rooms, as long as you don’t mess up the sheets and towels in a way that the guests will notice.

If you make screw up, management will tell you to get lost. Unlike family, they don’t have to take you back, and they won’t, ever.

Kranepool employees may go where the guests aren’t supposed to, and probably don’t want to: the Locker Room, for instance. This moldy space is strictly for staff.

This subterranean dungeon feels homey. Lockers are tiny rooms that hotel workers rent for free.

The Kranepool’s rear rooftop is also off-limits to those who pay to stay. Staff aren’t supposed to venture out where the good views are. I don’t smoke, so I look at the clouds.

There’s only one bathroom, for all employees. I think the chambermaids put up the sexy calendars to make the waiters feel at home.

Sometimes it seems the Employees Must Wash Hands Before Returning to Work sink has something more important to talk about than hygiene. The hole whispers, “Get on with your life!”, but in Martian. Maybe he says the same thing to everyone.

L'appartamento del vecchio proprietario/The Old Owner's Private Quarters

***

The Old Owner’s Private Quarters

Gustave Eiffel reserved a secret apartment for himself at the top of his towering masterpiece. He wanted to live with, live inside, what he’d created.

The Hotel Kranepool’s not exactly a monument. The structure hulks and broods against the twilight. Its purpose is to make rooms available to out-of-towners who need to spend a night or two in our fair city, or to locals who want to take care of personal business outside their homes.

Mr Kranepool kept a suite for himself in the hotel he bought after his career as a professional athlete was over. He lived and died in his dream.

The doors are open, but that doesn’t mean you should go in.

The old man kept his piss-bucket here. Maintenance workers removed it.

He had the bathroom dismantled when he decided to stop washing, permanently. He didn’t want to take any chances, after that.

More piss. He liked to keep it warm. Heat spread the tangy perfume.

This is where he slit his wrists, or cut his own throat, when he decided he couldn’t take it any more.

Suite for Dead Languages

Horns: some people play them, others kill for them. The Safari Lounge at the Hotel Kranepool exudes a gory coziness. The hunting crowd stays at the rustic local campground, so these rooms have become a hangout for intellectual conventioneers. The philatelists who show up during the cold months seem to enjoy having glass eyes follow them around the trophy rooms.

Librarians sink into the club chairs, and dream of fantastic careers in the court of Ludwig ll of Bavaria. They’re a bashful crowd, until the Comparative Literature Club shows up for German Culture Week in early fall.

Antlers seem to absorb stray vibraphone radiation. Keratinous mating-ritual ornaments may also function as antennae for ghostly ham-radio transmissions from the Cold War years. In the rooms’ grim, furry silence, I saw this 7-point buck’s furry ears swivel in their sockets one time when I opened the door and whisper-sang the first verse of “Sputnik Lubna”.

Spring brings the Single Dental Hygienists’ Dance-a-thon. The Kranepool becomes a three-star Playboy Club for the labcoats n’ lingerie set. I’ve removed bras, panties, and deflated balloons from this moose manquè’s rack.

The hunters tie dead deers to the fenders of their 4-wheel drive vehicles. Pink blood dribbles and bubbles from the animals’ mouths. Their extinguished eyes take on a glassy scarlet glint. Their black tongues loll, a delicacy. I don’t envy the night porter at the local campground.

Vecchi e nuovi fantasmi

Ghosts Old and New

Urban archeology is the hot new craze here in town, and it’s infectious. So one night when I was making the rounds as per usual, looking for left-on lights to turn off, and cigarettes left smoldering on the Kranepool’s wall-to-wall, or on windowsills behind the non-asbestos curtains, I searched for signs of the hotel’s murky past. Maybe the place wasn’t always what it is now.

This cheerful ornament in the frieze or metope or whatever it’s called above the second floor’s Junior Conference Chamber (known to employees as The Roswell Room) seemed out of synch with the rest of the Kranepool’s decor. This led to some research in the establishment’s meager library. Guests often leave books and magazines in their rooms, and they end up in there. The library has a poetic side, which shall be explored in another instalment...

Leaping antler-free gazelles are sacred to the Etruscan goddess Amònia, roughly the equivalent of Diana, the huntress, except she never kills anything, in heaven or on earth. She could have, if she’d wanted to, according to the Etruscans: she was supposed to be a deadly shot with her crossbow. But she never did.

Pagan idolatry is OK with me, especially if the idols in question are female. I was a Kali devotee for a while, when I still lived in Hollywood, but that particular cult didn’t get me too far. Another life, another idol. I left a tray of sliced salami and a glass of red wine for Amònia on the Biedermeier console just outside the Roswell Room, and set up the secret spy camera.

This goddess goes for salami and Chianti, apparently.

Maybe she’s also sacred to Etruscans who aspire to higher floors.

Hully Gully Hotel

Hully Gully Hotel

Hully Gully Hotel

The Shining ends with a zoom-in shot of a black & white photograph on a wall of the creepy old hotel’s grand ballroom. The ax murderer has always been a resident. Not the best possible movie to watch, if you’re a night porter.

The guys who’ve worked the bar here at the Hotel Kranepool through the years seem to have always been a sentimental crowd. Some people like to be reminded of happier times.  Life is hardly gay here in town these days, let’s face it. The Film Festival doesn’t attract the same caliber of stars as it once did. Or maybe it’s the stars who’ve grown less brilliant.

The Jazz Festival too glimmers ever more obscurely.

The two festivals are concurrent. Strange.

One night Max the Barman asked for help cleaning up after a private party in the Kranepool Lounge. The place was quiet, and I was between rounds. To kill the somewhat eerie silence, he told me about the Hully Gully Olympics, which were spontaneously staged here in 1972.

The shot on the right shows the All-Star jazz orchestra slapped together by none other than Archie Blaine, to provide syncopated hully-gully music that’d make the movie stars dance. The snap on the left shows Maisie Farkas (Star of “The Surprise Girl”, directed by Mick Dancer) working carnal moves on Big Bill Gester (Who played himself in “Only a Chauffeur”, directed by J.P. Slone). They were a winning combination, at least on that evening. The big prize, apparently, was an extra night’s stay at the Hotel Kranepool, which both stars declined.

Cops showed up when some fink guest complained about the noise to them, instead of going through ordinary channels, i.e. the Front Desk.

The Hully Gully All-Stars’ drummer had to go down to the station to answer some questions about his whereabouts, and to give a run-down of his actions, on the previous evening. Some vibraphone player was found dead, strangled, in Room 152.

Eyewitnesses said they’d seen the percussionists enmeshed in a heated argument before the Hully Gully Olympics got into full swing.

There were no Hully Gully Olympics in 1973. No more Hully Gully at the Kranepool, ever again.

See the Light
Management here at the Hotel Kranepool is insistent on thrift. During rounds, I’m supposed to keep an eye out for lights left on, and turn them off. This is in the interest of ecology, they claim. Sometimes I’d prefer to leave the whole place ablaze, in the interest of not being spooked by certain areas of the establishment.Management denies that a gruesome murder was committed in the second-floor conference/dining room.
How odd, then, that this is the light that gets left on most. Many nights, bright strips glow under the closed double-doors. No one’s in there, I know, but I go in anyway, flick the switch, and continue the inspection tour. When the Braun alarm clock I installed in the little room behind the reception desk says it’s time for another lonely hike, there’s the luminous sign of supernatural presences, and there’s the phantom chandelier, a phosphorescent octopus ghosting through light-space in search of food at 2,000 fathoms.
This cabbage-shaped luminous jellyfish has engulfed a portion of ceiling in the room known as the James Bond/Edgar Allan Poe Lounge. Whenever I find it left on, vibraphone melodies waft through the chill air. Management insists, vehemently, that the Kranepool is utterly devoid of Muzak. But the chimes aren’t dispelled when I kill the light.
Last time I went to the Public Library, I ran a check in the back-date newspaper morgue. There it was, in black and white: “Celebrity Vibraphonist Found Strangled in Hotel!”Not everyone loves soothing jazz, apparently.
Mort the Barman told me this odd accoutrement was a running light on the Andrea Doria. The left, or port, lantern, of that doomed ship.“How did Kranepool Management obtain this fascinating relic?” I asked. Especially when that particular ocean liner’s permanently at rest on the ocean floor somewhere.
“Through connections,” he said. When I asked why the lantern had been painted a pale opaque magenta, when the traditional color for port-side running lights is red, he said, “I think they wanted to attract a design world clientele.”Management’s scheme failed. No architects or interior decorators haunt the Kranepool Bar. This light, at least, can be relied on to stay off.
